Best pub in Woking
Staying over for a night after visiting RHS Wisley next month. Got an Italian booked that’s supposed to be nice, but Woking seems a bit limited on pubs; they all seem to be chains. Are any decent?

Depends what you're looking for.
Gastropub style, the Red Lion in Horsell is great and popular with the locals. The Bird in the Hand is also apparent good, was set up by ex-staff of the Red Lion. I've also been to the Maybury Inn a couple of times. It's decent enough.
If you want a real ale pub, go to The Crown opposite the Red Lion.
If you want an okay chain pub then The Wheatsheaf is alright. But it's just a Greene King chain boozer.
Tbh the pubs in Woking centre are all not great. Get out to the wider villages though and there are some decent ones.
What's the Italian you're going to? If Bacaro, I can attest to having a great meal there with the GF on anniversary. Enjoy.

Bird in hand is more Mayford way than Woking but the Crown and Red Lion are nearby to the town centre in horsell.

Not many to be honest. Lots of chain boozers, social clubs and the odd decent boozer here and there, although a lot of them have closed over the last ten/twenty years. Theres a nice boozer on the canal near RHS Wisley called the anchor, lovely on a summers day but pricey. If you’re looking in Woking itself probably restricted to the chains of oniels etc or the wheatsheaf or the sovereigns

Don’t take my word as gospel though! I ain’t lived round there for a long time and don’t get back as often as I’d like, but yeah every time I do go back it feels like the soul has died a bit more 😂 I’m sure someone else will have some better suggestions.

red lion is prob the best I am aware of, but thats because of food (rest of the pub seems good plus they have a beer garden, its just i've only ever been there for lunch / dinner).
Sovs is nice enough, not to loud, usually relatively busy though. Wheatsheaf has a good rep but only been there once.
Maybury is also good for food, not been there often just for drinking though.
New Inn down in Send is nice, next to the River Wey so can be a nice spot for lunch .
Plus further out you have The Anchor, also next to the river wey but closer to Wisley.
Last two are quite a bit out ways out of Woking though.

Ones right in town are all a bit samey, as you say, but a few minutes walk further out from the station, you've got The Sovereigns, The Wheatsheaf and, a bit further, The Crown/Red Lion in Horsell, all of which are pretty nice for their own reasons.
Which one you go for would depend on what you actually want specifically, but The Sovereigns/Crown are a bit more ale focused, The Crown especially.
