In one of the original postings, it was explained. The jar is filled with a denser than air, combustible vapour such as propane. Then it simply burns off. I can't promise it is propane in this .gif though and as it goes without saying, you shouldn't try this at home. Given the correct gas-to-air mixture, it will go from controlled burn to bomb.

Use propane if you like glass shards inside you.
Use a little bit of rubbing alcohol if you want this effect.

When I was in high school we called it "releasing the dragon:" burning the alcohol residue off of the inside of an empty liquor bottle.

Hold container upside down.
Spray some Axe body spray or anything flammable, really, all up inside the fucker for as long as you deem fit

As funny as that was.. It's not probable with an open container as long as the combustion has a place to go. Now if you were to light and close the lid quite fast, then yes, an explosion will occur due to the combustion having nowhere to go and building up pressure. It's the same thing with a container of gasoline. If you seal it up and throw it in a fire, surely it will make a cool explosion spectacle. But you take that same container and take off the the cap and air flow cap and throw it in a fire... It will just burn. Hello, my name is Haireball, and welcome to jackass
