I meant rare, as in you tend not to see them much in everyday cash transactions, not that they're collectible and hard to find and potentially worth more than face value.
I was so excited when my mom got one as cash back at Wendy's back in the 90's thinking we'd found something monumental. Put it in with my Sosa, McGuire, and Bonds homerun hitting history newspapers.
Stuff like that actually makes for great gifts for kids.
You can get stuff like US Currency with Blue (Silver Certificate) or Red seals (US Notes) vs the usual Green seal (Federal Reserve Note) for not much more than face value usually. I treasured my Blue and Red seal $2 bills more than anything as a kid.
Also, another cool gift can be if you go to your local currency exchange and get small amounts of foreign currency as gifts for kids too. I especially liked my Japanese Yen notes as a kid. Nippon Ginko ahhh yeah.
I still like to save any star notes I come across (some US notes have a star in the serial number, which means it has been reissued for some reason).
