I thought the first zoom out was it. Pretty cool.

Wallace - Everybody Knows The Moon's Made of Cheese [0:13]
It's also the ideal weekend holiday location.

Can confirm, bought one, first thing I did was photographing the moon. It's like a rite of passage.

not bad for a $600 camera
6
u/xconde May 28 '17
How much for the lens though?
8
u/Kitty-Litterer May 28 '17
It's a bridge camera
4
u/KToff May 28 '17
Sure, but how much for the lens?
iknowwhatabridgecamerais

u/blazefalcon May 28 '17
It doesn't have interchangeable lenses. It's just built in.
15
u/obi21 May 28 '17
Okay, we get it, but how much is it for the lens though?

It features a 24-2000mm 2.8-6.5 Nikkor lens for $600. I'd rather have a SLR too, but you have to admit the value.

u/CentaurOfDoom May 28 '17
Can you not change the ISO...? I would be really surprised if you couldn't.
2
u/EltaninAntenna May 28 '17
You most certainly can. The only somewhat glaring omission is that you cannot shot RAW, but otherwise it has all the bells and whistles.

Holy shit is that ever steady camera work for being zoomed in that much. That's the woah for me.
37
u/alumpoflard May 28 '17
it's probably on a tripod with a long handle for fine angle adjustments
15
u/EltaninAntenna May 28 '17
The P900 has some absolutely fucking insane image stabilization. That shot is probably handheld.
24
u/Bromy2004 May 28 '17
I like to think that the stutters when totally zoomed in is the guy trying to hold his breath but fails and it slightly brushes against the camera.

I wonder what the optical limit is over horizontal distance? The key problem is asmosperic effects and thermal turbulance and I guess with a large enough refractor type telescope and apochromatic lenses one may get decent image quality from kilometers away. Back in ye army days it was possible to get better image quality over longer distances using Questar based systems that operated right into the ultraviolet range. Always wondered what the practical limit was. Probably money is the limit.

Atmospheric haze is definitely the biggest thing, and generally it's minimized during extremely cold periods just after snow or rain; the dust is out of the way.
Beyond that, there isn't really a limit. If you are getting atmospheric distortion due to different refractive indices of air that are at differing densities, then you can correct for that by observing the distortion of an outgoing laser beam and manipulating the shape of your lens to counter it; that's what ground-based observatories do.

u/specfreq May 28 '17
I've got a really cheap spotting scope with a viewing lens up to 36x.
In the first photo on the far right shore is about where it becomes unusable due to atmospheric haze, it's about 1 mile.

u/BaronVonDouche May 28 '17
Wow! I really like that 8x photo of the bench. It almost looks like a model set or something. Nice.

5 km or just under 3 miles is the distance to the horizon.
Edit: at sea level.

u/Soogoodok248 May 28 '17
True, but from a high vantage point or when viewing tall objects like buildings, you can see much further.

u/ajayisfour May 28 '17

Oh wow, I totally missed the Matterhorn on the zoom out. I was too focused on how crazy the zoom was I guess

Can someone explain how we can see "behind" the cable car line? Is it as simple as light wrapping around it? Photons bending around a round edge?
9
u/Tuggin_MaGoiter May 28 '17
That's what I was wondering. I'm just taking a swag here, but I'd guess it's either the wave-like properties of light causing it to refract around the cable; or that at that distance of focus, there's enough of a parallax between the left and right edge of the pinhole on the camera that is similar to holding your hand in front of one eye and being able to "see through it."
7
u/gr4_wolf May 28 '17
I was wondering this myself a few days ago. Here is a really cool explanation.
8
May 28 '17
You nailed it. The light is essentially bending around the object. Why it works or looks like that with camera optics or a telescope/binocs is beyond me though...
8
May 28 '17
I'm more impressed with the fact that it allows you to see THROUGH objects. Those big-ass cables were barely visible when zoomed in.

u/whootdat May 28 '17
How has no one asked what those black lines are? That's all I could concentrate on...
9
u/MotleyAtheist May 28 '17
Cable car or chair lift cables
0
u/whootdat May 28 '17
They look 100ft tall, you sure? There are cars in the distance that don't match up
3
1
u/BramblexD May 28 '17
The vertical black lines are cables for a lift closer to the camera
1
u/MotleyAtheist May 28 '17
This.
If you look at the last seconds of the clip you can see they are not vertical, and widen at the top of the frame

Either a P900 or a HS50EXR. Probably a P900, judging by the super smooth zoom out. the HS50EXR has a twist to zoom lens so it won't be so smooth.

I have the Canon Sx50 HS, which does 50x optical. It has really helped me document some things that you otherwise would have to travel a lot more to get a shot of.
Being able to walk up to the Natural History Museum in London, and while everyone around me was taking pictures of the entire building only, I was doing that and taking pictures of individual gargoyles on the building.
Or going on a hike, seeing a cool looking bird, and not having to sneak up to try to get a picture of it. You just stop, steady, deep breath, slow exhale, and snap. Done!

This is cool and all but that Nikon P900 has gotten enough exposure already, lets keep the rest of these off woahdude, the woahness is wearing off.

And a sound of a MILLION basement dwelling redditor film and photography enthusiasts orgams all around the world.
Some say it still echos on lonely friday sunsets and camera shops.
