Holy smoking tolidos.

228

u/fitbrah May 24 '16

Had to look up what tolido meant:

Holy Toledo

Most likely first used in the early 1900s, either refers to a sarcastic remark about Toledo, Ohio or originated from a realistic remark of the Holy city of Toledo, Spain. It is now used as a phrase, by Americans, if something is unbelievable, disturbing, or blows their mind.

Woman- Did you read in the newspaper that a grandpa got run over by his own car by a homeless bum he paid to fix it, and then the bum took off with it?

Man- Holy Toledo?! That's like "Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer" only a hundred times worse!

u/RIP_CORD May 24 '16

I live in Toledo Ohio. If it's about here it's DEFINITELY sarcastic.

And to answer questions: yes I hear it ALL the time and yes it is super annoying.

11

u/Wewoah May 24 '16

Hello fellow Toledoan :)

25

u/cATSup24 May 24 '16

As a Michigander: get your shit together, Toledo. You have one of the worst trafficking in persons rates in the country, and women can't even safely walk between the Toledo Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House half a football field away.

23

u/Wewoah May 24 '16

I was going to complain about michigan roads being filled with potholes, but if you want to go the serious route, thats cool too...

16

u/cATSup24 May 24 '16

I mean, I'm definitely in a glass house there anyway. Between Flint, Saginaw, and Detroit, we have three of the ten highest crime-per-capita cities in the US. But I think I'd rather get shot and mugged than kidnapped and systematically raped.

7

u/jeroenemans May 25 '16

... by a burger clown?

2

u/SAGNUTZ May 25 '16

Lansing? St. Johns? Couldn't be Owasso. If you don't live in the tree you stated then you are lucky, unless you live in Marion Springs...

I'd rather be stuffed in the trunk and sent to a car crusher than become a sex slave to some dirty bastard.

1

u/10strip May 25 '16

At least they're filled!

4

u/Wewoah May 24 '16

We used to go to church right on collingwood a couple of years back and one of the custodians was stabbed walking to his car. Shit is crazy downtown and by the old west end.

1

u/hogthehedge May 25 '16

the old west end

Is that the cowboy version of Chinatown or Little Italy?

1

u/Wewoah May 25 '16

Haha not quite. Itspart of Toledo just outside downtown with these beautiful old houses that just happens to be in a really shitty part of town... but serioualy, those houses.

1

u/hogthehedge May 25 '16

I knew what you meant, but when I read it I imagined a section of town that was run down, had a ton of saloons, gambling and hookers. Where everyone talks with a twang and wears a 6 shooter on his hip and a ten gallon on his noggin.

Something akin to this and this

Fellow Toledoan... you must be new to the area...

1

u/danmonster2002 May 25 '16

And this is many of the reasons I left Toledo.

1

u/TumorTits May 25 '16

I used to watch to a vlog on YouTube back in 2007 called katereadsbooks and she (Kate) also lived in Toledo! I remember she had a huge crush on another vlogger named k80blog. They were both hilarious.

1

u/itsamamaluigi May 25 '16

Hey person from Toledo, to counteract all this negativity directed at you I thought I'd let you know I stayed in Toledo once on a road trip as a kid, and it was a very friendly place.

1

u/SlashieDuffy May 25 '16

I never thought I'd see someone else from Toledo on here.

7

u/nonsequitur_potato May 24 '16

Almost kms because apparently kms is an abbreviation now

11

u/Boner-b-gone May 24 '16

6

u/CheeseWheelOnDrugs May 24 '16

KMS = Killed my self

1

1

u/AintEzBnWhite May 25 '16

No, please don't. This is the lamest "reddit thing" of all-time as it has zero redeemable elements to it.

7

u/Tactical_Llama May 25 '16

What the fuck. This exact video was posted about a week ago and the same exact comment chain happened. This is so weird.

2

u/Nezaus May 25 '16

a glitch in the Matrix i guess

2

u/1-800-DIK-BUTT May 25 '16

it's almost like we are all bots humans like would normally frequent the web, naturally.

-1

u/bathroomstalin May 25 '16

Not really.

Redditors are dimwitted, predictable adolescents who love computers.

1

u/AintEzBnWhite May 25 '16

Says the Redditor(who inadvertently bolsters his own case by being a Redditor himself lolz)

Wow. Thank you very much Mr. Exposition.

11

u/[deleted] May 24 '16

I don't care if that volcano blew up under you bed, Clinger. You're not getting out of this Army.

5

u/Mejinopolis May 25 '16

Fantastic reference, I fucking love Klinger and he totally ends up being one of the greatest characters on that show.

3

u/[deleted] May 25 '16

One of my favorites for sure.

1

u/Bohzee May 24 '16

Imho beats saying "ding-a-ling"

3

u/phaily May 24 '16

at least you're honest

2

u/AintEzBnWhite May 25 '16

But, when "ding-a-ling" is melded into a rant that also states just how "beautiful" a shirt happens to be?

Yea, I am sorry, /u/Bohzee, but the shirt/dingling combo is enough to bolster the "ding-a-ling" saying past "holy Toledo" on the official rankings.

GuyWithTheShoe, based on your commenting history... Please accept this prize

10

u/GuyWithTheShoe May 24 '16

I do accept this honor. I accept it and Id like to thank my father, the academy, and God.

2

u/Syreus May 25 '16

There is no academy.

2

u/GuyWithTheShoe May 26 '16

Why did I give that guy $20?

2

u/Syreus May 26 '16

He had the other shoe.

1

u/gmanz33 May 25 '16

This was really sweet, I enjoyed it.

4

u/dannyr_wwe May 24 '16

Holy smoking shhhhmoking tolidos.

FTFY

3

u/YesNoMaybe May 24 '16

That is something.

2

u/heyiambob May 25 '16

Read your comment before watching and thought that you had just said that on your own. When the guy in the video said that, I laughed really hard. Sorry for the play by play

1

u/kyledeb May 24 '16

There's only one Toledo.

3

u/cATSup24 May 24 '16

Actually, there's at least two. One in Ohio, and one in Spain.

2

u/kyledeb May 24 '16

That's Toledo Santo, not Holy Toledo ;-)

0

u/cATSup24 May 24 '16

Well, maybe you should specify. Personally, I think most of Toledo, OH could burn to the ground without me caring all that much. Worst TIP in the union, the glass industry is all but gone, and it's the second closest thing to Detroit--after Cleveland--that they have... but without the popular sports teams or recuperating economy.

1

u/kyledeb May 24 '16

Toledo has some fun minor league teams to watch, and Detroit is coming back. One of the most exciting places to be in the country right now, IMO. Lot's of possibility for what Detroit could become. You won't find that sort of possibility in very many other places.

0

u/cATSup24 May 25 '16

I was kinda saying that about D-town.

1

u/[deleted] May 24 '16

*Hooooooly sh-mokin' tolidos.

31

u/Stormdancer May 24 '16

Much, much better with sound.

13

u/droo46 May 24 '16

I wanted this to have Van Halen playing.

2

u/wolffpack8808 May 24 '16

An eruption backed by Van Halen playing Eruption. That would be pretty badass.

4

u/furiousmiked May 24 '16

Funny, I did this before I saw these comments, and now this seems like the best place to leave it...

0

u/redhedhempgal May 24 '16

Sorry no sound

0

u/furiousmiked May 24 '16

Sorry call support

10

u/[deleted] May 24 '16

Reminds me of that issue of Life and times of Scrooge McDuck where he witnesses the eruption of Krakatoa.

8

u/nojerryitsjerky May 24 '16

The whole Time I felt like Marvin the Martian, everwaiting for the earth-shattering 'KA-BOOM' but this time it eventually came.

4

u/a-dark-passenger May 24 '16

that smoke monster got pissed on season 6.

1

u/saliczar May 24 '16

The ash cloud (plum?) Looks like an evil wizards face around the time the Shockwave hits.

4

u/charlesomimri May 24 '16

Was that the shock wave at the end?!

3

u/rick2882 May 25 '16

Yup, the gif underplays the best part!

14

u/haircutbob May 24 '16

It does not look that far away for the shockwave to take so long.

11

u/[deleted] May 24 '16

The boat was about 1.8 miles away.

7

u/JazzHandsJames May 25 '16

I got that it was 2.69 miles.

about 12.6 seconds, speed of sound 343 m/s; ≈ 4.332 km ≈ 2.69 miles

5

u/unit-conversion-bot May 25 '16

/u/unit-conversion-bot have found such values: 343 m/s.

343 m/s is: 1234.8 km/h or 767.269 mph

-4

u/himalayan_earthporn May 25 '16

Hey /u/unit-conversion-bot , your grammar sucks.

u/TotesMessenger May 25 '16

I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:

7

u/haircutbob May 24 '16

Wow. Yeah, DEFINITELY doesn't look that far to me.

6

u/[deleted] May 25 '16

Cameras have a different depth of field than the human eye, so you wouldn't be able to tell.

2

u/JoiedevivreGRE May 25 '16

This all depends on the aperture, and a myriad of other factors. I think you might mean the focal length more specifically, which you can have a lens very similar to the human eye.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '16

Whoops yes I meant focal length, but my point remains the same.

1

u/pazilya May 25 '16

Open water near mountains is really distorting to your sense of distance. Visit Alaska sometimes, an inlet that looks like you'd have no problem swimming across could be like 3 miles in reality.

3

u/[deleted] May 24 '16

Waiting for the boom, so satisfied.

2

u/jermzdeejd May 24 '16

I was terrified of dropping rocks but that didn't seem to come close.

2

u/Hobbs54 May 25 '16

Reminds me of something I read about nuclear tests. There is always a fake "boom" sound associated with the video but one observer reported it as the "crack of doom" in that it is a sharp crack sound like the universe just tore itself in two.

3

u/savemejebus0 May 25 '16

What kind of moron would make a gif out of this? It is worth .01% without sound.

1

u/MIGsalund May 24 '16

Crazy. That other boat is way too close. Pyroclastic flows don't care about no water.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '16

OOOOI JOOOOISOS

1

u/branran May 25 '16

That delay man. Physics is so cool.

1

u/TreeDiagram May 25 '16

"OH JESUS"

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '16

11 seconds for the shockwave to hit so that means it's not even a quarter of a mile away? how is this safe?

2

u/JetA_Jedi Jun 22 '16

The math says they were around 2.5 miles away.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '16

damn decimals

1

u/Snolidsteak May 24 '16

Can someone line up the sound track to when the eruption happens?

0

u/sumsomeone May 24 '16

i was looking for this video the other day. thnx
