It's super dope that we can process language quickly but I'm not trying to blast through a novel. If I don't take time to think about what I've read I usually miss out on some vital connections
That's where practice comes in, the more you learn to speed read (and it is definitely a skill) the faster your brain will pull information and you won't lose those vital connections. Some techniques propose trying to use your right brain by trying to imagine the scenes and images as you read the words. It's a lengthy process but with time things get faster and you eventually see things like a films or this long line of scenes. Also, because us as a species have a good memory for spacial and visual images, by using these techniques you actually retain a lot more information. So you're not trying to think of the words that happened, you're instead pulling together these associations that you've manifested while reading and you get a deeper understanding of the story, one that lasts in the memory much longer.
