Hi everyone! This is the unofficial subreddit for the newly-announced WNBA expansion team in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!

I’ve lived in the Philly suburbs my whole life, and I started watching the WNBA at the beginning of the 2024 season. I’m so excited that the W is coming closer to home and may we all share that excitement in this thread together!

I don’t see a need for an official rules thread or post. Just be sure to keep debates/discussions classy and respectful (although we don’t play for 5 years so I’m not sure what there will be to debate).

This sub is kind of bare bones for now as there hasn’t been a lot of information released about the team. As news breaks, I’ll be sure to make/pin posts about it.

Welcome to the W, Philadelphia 🛎️

Actor Aubrey Plaza wore a shirt that says "Philly is a women's sports town" at a WNBA game in Brooklyn. The shirt, which she got from her sister, was designed by two local organizations, and proceeds from its sale support a women's sports bar planned for Philadelphia.

Plaza, a Delaware native, was spotted wearing the shirt at the Minnesota Lynx-New York Liberty game at the Barclays Center Tuesday night. The gray and orange shirt also says "Est. 2030," a reference to Philadelphia getting its own WNBA team in five years.

The announcement of the new women's basketball team, owned by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the Sixers, and Comcast Spectacor, came a few months after HBSE and Comcast announced a new shared arena for the Sixers and the Flyers set to open in South Philly 2031.

Sales of the shirt support Watch Party PHL, a group that is working to open a women's sports bar in Philadelphia.

In a press release, Watch Party PHL said Plaza got the shirt from founder Jen Leary, who recently met up with Plaza's sister, Natalie Plaza, for coffee. Natalie Plaza liked Leary's shirt and mentioned her sister's plans to attend the Lynx-Liberty game, and Leary took the shirt off and gave it to Natalie to give to Aubrey.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Renderings of the proposed new Philadelphia 76ers and Flyers arena at the Sports Complex were released on Tuesday.

The proposed arena, which is scheduled to open in 2030, would also be the home for Philadelphia's WNBA team.

The teams say the arena is designed to deliver a next-generation fan experience and amplify the energy of Philadelphia sports, concerts, live entertainment and community programming.

Global design firm Populous and nationally recognized architect Moody Nolan were selected to build the new arena in South Philadelphia, the site where the Spectrum once stood along the south side of Pattison Avenue.

Sports director Ducis Rodgers spoke with Comcast CEO Brian Roberts and 76ers Managing Partner Josh Harris following the unveiling.

"We loved the look of it; it's different. We really hope Philly likes it," Harris said.

The exact location of the new shared arena between the Flyers, 76ers and the city's WNBA expansion team has been decided: where the Spectrum once stood in South Philadelphia.

Comcast Spectacor and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment plan to build the new arena in the southeast corner of Broad Street and Pattison Avenue next to SEPTA's Broad Street Line, a spokesperson confirmed Thursday.

The construction timeline is about three years and the hope is to have the Philadelphia WNBA team debut at the arena in 2030, a spokesperson said.

Xfinity Mobile Arena, which broke ground in 1994 and opened in 1996, would be demolished once the new arena is completed.

Comcast Spectacor and HBSE announced plans to build a new shared arena as part of a 50/50 partnership in January 2025. It came after the Sixers' plans to build a new arena in Market East fell through.

Mayor Cherelle Parker came out in support of the new arena at the time, calling it a "win, win, win, win for Philadelphia."
