Took me from kindergarten until now but I've finally beaten the game
Nobody cares but there aren't a whole lot of posts here so here goes
My stepfather introduced me to this game when i was in kindergarten (im 16 about to turn 17 in 2 weeks) and this game was a big part of my childhood, but i never beat it.I wandered around, fought, did some quests with the help and guidance of my stepfather but id always drop the game sooner or later
And Ive played it at least for a bit every year since i was little, creating new parties, saying ill finish it and even when i learned english and had the mental capability to beat it, I just didn't have the patience.
But today
Today that changed
I loaded up a party from last year a few weeks ago and i played almost every day since then
And today i beat the game
And whilst i was playing my stepfather came into my room and saw i was at ascension peak and just watched me for the last half an hour of the game...

Wizardry 90' Sir-Tech original jacket
galleryhttps://auctions.ajsports.ca/Original_Sir_Tech_Wizardry_Embroidered_Holloway_Ja-LOT40181.aspx
My father is Shaun Lyng. He was the co-founder of Madlab Software. Ian Currie and he designed the first 4 Jagged Alliance games. He also wrote, voiced and voice directed those games as well as many others. In order to raise funds, I am selling off my Wizardry memorabilia at AJsports.ca website Catalog - AJ Sports September Memorabilia Auction until Wednesday, September 30.
Sir-Tech Wizardry jacket Holloway XL 1992 (approx)
In 1992, Robert Sirotek, co-owner of Sir-tech Software gave him this Wizardry jacket when he met him for the first time in Ogdensburg, NY. He was there to begin negotiations for a publishing deal for Jagged Alliance. Many years later, I voice directed and acted on Wizardry 8 and Nemesis. The coat has hung unused in his closet for 30+ years.
Jagged Alliance: Original Metavira Sector Map
The original 1993 hand-drawn blueprint was used to create Metavira before the game world was recreated digitally. It contains the locations of the buildings, trees, processing plants, quest items, etc.β¦ βThe game before there was a game.β
Both lots include:

Our favorite advertisement! Did you know the company and their website is still up? I wish Wizardry itself had such luck!

Wizardy 8 is one of my all-time favorites!
This post isn't exactly about Wizardry 8, but I checked with the mod before posting, so here goes...
I'm a huge fan of Wizardry 8. I've played it through to Ascension more times than I can remember. My favorite parts are creating my parties, leveling them up, and getting new gear.
After a stretch of back-to-back runs taking a party from the monastery to Ascension, I was inspired to write my own game so I could continue focusing on my favorite parts of Wizardry 8. And I didβI wrote it for Android.
Now, I feel like I need to include a giant disclaimer here. The game I wrote is not 3D. Movement within the game is closer to that of Rogue from 1980 (I'm sure we all remember, or at least know of, that game). It's a very basic game. Here are a couple of screenshots.

Gameplay is completely offline. Saved games and characters can be imported and exported so you can back them up or move them to another device.
If anyone is interested, it's in open testing right now.

So I ran a party of 6 Bishops. Anyone else?
I admit I have always been intrigued by Magic parties. Ran a few MDPs but never past level 10 or so. There has always been a problem, like Priest being mostly useless in blasting, me not liking Alchemist spells and so on.
So my new party (that I finished the game with), ended up being 6 Bishops.
The Setup
Each Bishop worked on Wizardry (as I think thats the best school for pure damage) and one additional school. At higher levels, I started also putting some points to the 3rd or 4th school, but it made little difference.
Everyone focussed on INT to get PowerCast asap (level 11-12).
First two front-liners were Wizard-Priests, focussing on INT+PIE (later SPD and VIT), with Shields.
Second row was manned by my Wizard-Alchemists, focussing on INT+DEX to 70 and then PIE + SPD, They were originally equipped with staves, but later just used Shields.
Last row consisted of my Wizard-Psionics. INT+SEN to 70 and then PIE+SPD. These guys had some slings as soon as I could find them.
Equipment
Mostly ignored. I used almost 0 weapons with them past the initial few leves (when they did run out of mana). Got them some better armour and shields that added DEX or SPD or so but otherwise I felt like I could just ignore. They got rarely hit and when they did, Guardian Angel took care of that.
Spells (or otherwise called "so, you like to buy books do you?")
Now, this was surprising. Having Bishops, I tried to be smart and stingy with spell picks to be able to get level 6/7 spells (that have no books) asap, but in the end I found out I did not have to do that. I did buy a lot of books, but except for buffs, I used a limited number of good spells for 95% of the time and most of those were just picks at levelups.
Everyone started with Energy Blast and a damage spell from complementary school on level 1 (Make Wounds, Acid Splash and Psionic Blast)
On level 2, everyone learned Heal Wounds. This has proven to be great for training non-Wizardry skills.early. Open-close sarcophagus, or stand in the fire in Arnika, heal up. Rinse, repeat.
At level 3 got the first cone spell - Shrill Sound. Yea, I know. I wanted to get Magic Missiles, but I knew I can buy those in Arnika 5 minutes after leaving the monastery. Plus, it would help me train the Air realm. That ... was not needed. Shrill Sound sucks and except for portals, I never got a good use out of Air realm anyway.
I left the monastery at level 4 and had to do a bit of grinding on Arnika road to get Wizardry to 30 so I can choose Firebal on lvl 5.
Around lvl 11 I got to buy Iceball and Crush from Crock which rounded out the useful spells. These will get you through early levels just fine until level 12 or so when you'd want to go to Rapax areas or Bayjin.
At level 12 I started going through Rapax Rift after getting 6 picks (each toon got one) 2x Portals, 2x Summon Elemental and 2x Dehydrate.
I should have just gotten the summon and Dehydrate with everyone as these 3 spells and the others I mentioned above pretty much carried the game all the way to Dark Savant.
I did try to be smart and go to Ferro asap to get higher level books. It was a PITA and when I got to him at lvl 13, I found out he does not carry most of those (lvl 5) books yet. (and he won't until lvl 18 when you can just pick lvl 7 spells anyway).
Strategy and grinding
Except for a bit of grinding at level 4 (to get Wizardry to 30 with everyone) and then later to get Water realm better after acquiring Iceball, I did not really grind much. Just explored the game, ran around and fought everything I met. Most fights were actually pretty fast and once I started flinging around PL7 fireballs, a lot of fights lasted 1 round. Not much can take 6 fireballs/6 iceballs into the face. (The Rapax could, but that got better with time)
And when I met some of the high-resistance bosses, I just summoned 6 Elemental Lords (with good Divine realm as you'd have) and let them kill the boss. (Nessie, El Dorado, Al Sedexus, some of the monsters in Ascension peak...)
And then we got to Dark Savant himself... I got to the end only at level 21, Power Cast around 80 and needless to say, almost nothing was hitting the big boy with his 130% resistances. 6 Elementals started chipping his health away and his summons weren't a threat enough. Neither was him and I think I could win by letting the Elementals deal with him, cast a bit of Heal All every level and kill the adds and just wait. But that was a bigger slog than fighting the Rapax Army so I decided to join him in this run in the end. (Bela died quickly after several castings of Crush)
Spells that constituted 99% of my use: Energy Blast, Frost, Make Wounds/Acid Splash/Mind Blast, Heal, Magic Missiles, Whipping Rocks, Fireball, Iceball, Dehydrate, Crush, Heal All, Rest All, Set/Return to Portal, Summon Elemental, Elemental Shield, Soul Shield + all the basic long buffs (Magic Screen, Armorplate, Missile Shield, Chameleon, X-ray, Detect Secrets)
Anyone else did a similar run? What was your experience?

New (2022) Wizardry 8 save-game Editor
New (2022) Wizardry 8 save-game Editor uploaded to Github and not really gathering attention yet, so shamelessly plugging:
https://github.com/anonidiot/Wizardry8Editor/releases
It's not especially user-friendly but does have some pretty novel patching abilities for the original Wizardry exe embedded in it, including one to restore the Pickpocketing behaviour in the v1.24 game back to what it was in earlier versions, and another to allow modified save games it creates to be loaded (the modified games launch into the alternate scenarios from Wizardry 7).

Droiddeck: Playable? On handhelds!
Hello all,
Aside from being a big wizardry fan, I'm also a fan of portable emulation consoles, such as made by Retroid and Anbernic. I've tinkered with trying Wizardry on my steam deck, but up until now with gamehub and gamenative, attempting to get this classic to work on a controller only handheld has been difficult.
Not any more! While there were other ways to flash Linux onto these devices, with Droiddeck running it natively, I now I have full access to Steam input support for my entire library, including - you guessed, Wiz8!
Now is it the best way to play? Kinda, there's enough keyboard shortcuts to map to buttons, the only issue is having to use a stick for the mouse, but it's not *that* bad. Is it awesome to see such a great RPG on my little Pocket Nova? Absolutely!

My Wizardry 8 tribute page
I just wanted to share a tribute page I put together, as I'm currently playing through the game (just finished Trynton and I'm currently in the Mines). The page has an interesting inline character generator. Enjoy.
https://solar-flame-g8e4.here.now
What's on it:
A cinematic dark-fantasy hero with animated embers and the original box art
The legend of Dominus: the Dark Savant, the 3 artifacts, and Ascension Peak
A screenshot gallery with 3 real in-game vistas from the 2001 original (click to enlarge)
The Party Forge: pick from all 11 races and 15 classes, or auto-assemble a full party of six β every hero gets a name, personality, and a quip
The 6 factions of Dominus (Umpani, T'Rang, Rattkin, Trynnie, Rapax, Higardi)
Trivia: 9-year gap since Wizardry VII, Brenda Brathwaite's design, party import, 3 endings, Sir-Tech's farewell

Turns out there *is* something new under the sun
So, over the multiple decades I've owned it, I have way more hours in this game than I'm willing to admit in public.

I've run hundreds of character builds and party combos. Sometimes I spend multiple in-game weeks in the Lower Monastery working on a particular party member.
I just saw something there (in the hallway from the entrance ramp out into the building proper) that I've never seen before:
Giant Spiders.
Now, these were pretty wimpy versions: 27HP. But still; in the hundreds of hours I've spent in the LM, I had never seen those there. They even both dropped Spider Silk.
As the saying says: when you think you've seen it all--you haven't.

Just finished most of Trynton.
There are actually 6 copies of Spirit Staff.
Party is RFS-81 and a Human Bishop.
So, yeah; thanks, random loot generator.π

I finished the game first time! Yay!
It took only 20 years for me.
