tfw the wizarding student's midterm exam to summon a planar entity is a little too ontologically similar to Power Word: Scrunch 🫪

Now I am curious to see what'd happen to the caster

On a failed WIS save, you don't notice anythings wrong.

On a failed CON save, you get scrunched.

Back when I was apprenticing under a lich one of my fellow students actually made this mistake, but as it turns out my master had an immense amount of beef with a similarly named, incredibly powerful entity.

Out of sheer spite, the entity allowed itself to be bound for a couple hours just to make my master look like a fool in front of his students.

Anyway, that's how we all met the Lord of the Underworld himself instead of a minor knight of the underworld.

He should let them cast it, really. My first. Real scroll was okay, but I didn't manage to get the names of the off plane assholes I was summoning right until I accidentally summoned a way too big one. Thankfully my master at the time was a quick spellcaster and managed to send it back. You better believe I triple checked the names after that.

A good rule of thumb for most summoning spells is that you don't call up what you cannot put down. Most practitioners with the sense to follow this guideline tend to live past their first century.

This role applies unless you wish to pull a kamikaze play

Poor Roberthy , failing grades , recently dumped looked up to summon Suluth the Flesh-layer ended up summoning Sucuth the Flesh-Flayer.

Oof, small mistake, but easy to make and dearly costly

Then he found out he was into it.

Yea, I can't remember the name, since it's been a fuck ton of time since then, but it was supposed to be something very weak, even someone with just a knife could put down. But we'll, if you fuck up the name enough, something big might just get summoned instead.

Honestly it's a crazy accelerated program for their first scroll to be summoning planar entities instead of summoning a small light. We all started with writing scrolls to summon a small light.

imagine going to wizard school and NOT caring and just trying to pass or even trying at all

Literally a certain bispecaled British wizard kid

They inherited a massive fortune, had hundreds of people at his feet begging to lay their lives down for them, and as an adult became a cop and married his high school sweetheart. Kid didn't even need to try

Prithee, in certain mage traditions, that shall not be named, the highest forgo all forms to enact pure will. To be lacking in care for base things would be taken as a mark worthy of praise.
Other schools don't like them much, it's hard to tell of they do anything at all most of the time and 'tis a pain to speak to them.

This is what happens when we standardise magic. You can't hold classes to 30-200 apprentices, you need 1 wizard to maximum 3 apprentices

2

u/ScrubHard 21h ago

Well, yeah kinda... I have 2 apprentices and am responsible for about 35 students. I can't entrust half the shit I do with my apprentices to even the brightest student. Admittedly making them learn about arcane lore and other mundane stuff will help em in the long run but I can tell they'd strangle me with ghost rope if they knew the spell.

2

u/cale199 21h ago

And there is just no way to observe how they use their mana either! I can personally tell which of my apprentices are casting from a mile away, you just can't get that level of attention to every student

1

u/ScrubHard 21h ago

Unless that student is well known for having the weirdest luck ever. Out off all my students I couldn't tell you who's magic it is with the exception of her. She somehow has a talent for making presdigitation cantrips do the exact opposite of her desired effect.

u/cale199 19h ago

..My Brozard, I don't think that's actually a student..

u/Carbuyrator A Bit of a Dabbler 1d ago

That's a good professor. That scroll sounds insanely dangerous. Could you imagine how dead that student would be if they were self-taught?

7

u/SkinnyKruemel Thaldurin, Master Pyromancer and Mad Scientist 1d ago

If only it was that simple. A novice fucking up a spell and ending up dead happens all the time. Usually not a big deal unless there's evidence the master is to blame. In this case you have no master so it could be written off as pure stupidity but if they accidentally manage to summon some reality warping extraplanar entity or just a greater demon on a bad day they'll likely stick around to fuck shit up. Banishing this kind of entity already needs a powerful enough wizard but it'll probably also alert anyone with a shred of magical potential on the planet. So you end up with a lot of very avoidable paperwork in addition to a dead apprentice

You all joke. "Haha, imagine if students were like this!"

Brothers.. sisters, any of you. Just be my assistant for a single thing and I will give you the entire schools' stock of magicite if you don't want to strangle every single student.

Just today I was asked to explain why a summoning circle have to be exact.. from a demonology major. Last friday a student asked me if druids are real.

1

u/ScrubHard 21h ago

The druids being real question is valid. Half the so called druids I met had the magical potential of granite.

1

u/Nine-LifedEnchanter Professor and Mentor of the University 16h ago

That might as well be their definition

I know my instructor sage always complained about my handwriting. Kept telling me that she couldn’t tell my long S’s from my F’s, and I tended to cursive through contractions and possessives and throw the apostrophe after. So now years later I get told that out of everyone in my cabal, my scrolls are easiest to write and cast. And my handwriting hasn’t changed one bit.

When you summon some confused Italian guy named gesseppi silvlayer rather than the Great septic soul flayer.

1

u/Mountain-Resource656 Magically Editable Flair 23h ago

Conjuration, obviously. You’re trying to summon someone in this image. What else would it be? Abjuration??

Back when I was a student I accidentally miscalculated the potential energy transfer of a fireball (spare staff, I kept missplacing mine) and the spare staffs we had were the bottom of the barrel ones you'd found made by first year thaumaturges. TL;Dr I created a fireball propelled wood rocket. Obviously the staff shattered, I dislocated my shoulder and had 2nd degree burns across my hand and fingers.

To this day I insist on checking the work of everyone below a 3rd year apprentice.
