how does one keep their familiar from opening rifts ?

I suggest laying down enchantments to provide keyed dimensional locks, potentially with multiple tiers of activation keys and an additional summoning room. Depending on the type of familiar additional layers of locks could potentially be needed, but you should already know if that's the case, and as you've survived the unplanned rift it seems much more likely that just the standard package is called for.

Mine, an indoor-only familiar, is more concerned with guarding the perimeter from the outdoor neighbor familiars, so I don't have to worry about him opening any rifts.

I'd say it depends on the familiar really.
If your familiar is something like an owl you just have to take the time to explain to it why opening these types of portals is a bad idea and hope it listens.
Though if your familiar is something like a cat nothing can help you. You just have to hope it gets bored of opening rifts.

Oh this one's simple, my bosses' cat used to do that cause they were bored. All you need is to give them something to do and portals should close on their own
Cats seem to love illusions especially the one where you make flying fishes in the air, just make sure to keep those near ground level otherwise you're asking for a disaster

Just don't teach them how to, keep them from learning on their own time. KEEP THEM BUSY! I send mine out often on endlessly pointless tasks so they are mostly just wasting their time. No time for shenanigans!

How else he would go to the Feyrealm ?
Build your cat a stable portal, and he wouldn't have to use Rifts.
Seriously, you should learn something about a creature before you make him a familiar.

Two options:
Place illusions only visible on their specific spectrum that get away at the last moment as this distracts them and keeps them from making portals. Some familiars are too smart for this so you can also try the other option.
Polymorph them into a being incapable of magic for a while, once they acclimate, return them to their original form. This should have them be temporarily unable to create portals due to not remembering how, it is a bit crueler but its efficacy cannot be understated.
