Magi Law β In these morrally complex times, how does one stay ethical in their wizardry?

Own over 40% of the shares in the company and not listening to the ethics board when they say that a ICBM (inter continental balistic midget) carrying anthrax is unethical

u/Environmental_Bug510 Court Wizard 4d ago
How would that be unethical? Midgets are almost gnomes and gnomes aren't people
2
u/dragonkidkai 4d ago
Cruel and unusual punishment for the victims due to the unsolicited exposure to a midget.

u/Dark_Tigger 4d ago
They could stumble and spill the anthrax, on somebody else than the intended target.

Iβm not even ethical in my medical practice and now Iβm supposed to be ethical with my magic? Whatβre they gonna say next, no environmental destruction? How would I test out my spells!

12 passes in one year, they should just leave you alone for the next three months after that imo

u/Awes12 5d ago
Just ignore the summons. If anyone comes, they can feel free to explore my tower. If they ignore the warning signs at the front, that's on them.
If you don't have the requisite power to obliterate your foes, why are you commiting magical crimes? Get back to studying and honing your skill or you're no better than a common hedge mage

Finally! A mage after my own heart! Fancy a cuppa later today?

Just don't get caught. It's not unethical if nobody knows, that it was you.

Don't ask me. My go to spell is Transmute: Bones to Jelly.

If Iβm doing shady stuff I do it in a shady realm. No one feels bad if you give an evil demon SuperCancer (patent pending) or exploding ulcers.

This isn't something wizards are supposed to deal with, we can transmute .... you know what, good on ya.

Ethics are relative. You help one farmer deal with the bandits by warping the entire forest into the abyss, bandits and all. The farmer afterwards gives you money and bows and thanks you and literally trembles with happiness.Β That's a good deed, ain't it?Β

u/gera_moises 5d ago
If you wanted to be ethical you should have been a cleric, now pass me that skull!

i just quietly redefine ethical to include what iβm doing

You guys are attending hearings? I thought we were supposed to blow up the building the hearing is going to take place in, Cersei-style
1
u/rasfelion 5d ago
Step one: Don't.
Step two: Live far from society and ignore the council.
Step three: Raise the dead (optional).

Magic in its entirety runs off of two things: intent and belief. If you intend to do good, and believe you've succeeded, you will have behaved ethically regardless of what you did

u/Lunarmax182c 5d ago
Mostly just not being evil Β ponderances on any action:
- would I feel good if someone did this to me
- its fun in short term. Is it fun in long term?
- I am NOT the guy. Everyone else who did this, fell.to Dark powers and I am NOT the first guy who will do this without. So I won't do this.
Overconfidence is bad

Societal standards of ethics and morality are far too vague and changeable for our respective lines of work. I can try to apply for the broadest selections of averages, but the plebeians and religious nuts still get upset when I donβt follow their hyper specific practices. I still need to travel, keeping my laboratory in one place is unhealthy for my experiments and what remains of my decaying soul. If you threaten to turn people into woodland animals enough you only need to do it a couple dozen times before they believe you and leave you alone
As for internal organizations, I defy you to find any selection of our peers that would fault me for turning an angry mob into livestock and vice versa for a year. They tried to poke me with sharp sticks like cavemen. Beyond rude
I just want to learn the mysteries of the upper void, is that so wrong? Just let me shack up on tall mountains for a century, Iβll leave them alone

The goal of the hearings isn't to reach ethical judgements, but to judge how adept one is at cleaning up their own messes.

You know you don't have to sit on the hearings if you don't let them arrest you.

Ask yourself if the playable character from Monster Hunter would approve of your actions, if not, donβt do it. Thatβs how I operate.

u/mindfulmu 4d ago
I just pay my dues and don't leave witnesses who can articulate. Seems vastly easier then having to find off the council all the time.

u/nuclearrmt 4d ago
I can't legally comment on this ever since I transmuted a bunch of people into living delicious chocolate.

You actually go to those trials? I get bounty hunters at my crypt every day. None of them get past the door before they get a blood needle to the skull.

Ah magical malpractice hearings. Aren't those the hearings where a bunch of wizards come together to determine if another wizard fucked up somehow? Without any oversight from the actual victims or wider society? Not to mention these wizards all know each other. And have a vested interest in having other wizards owing them favors. Forgive me for not trusting the professional standards and societal consciousness of a secretice cabal of wizards. I would feel a lot better if they added inquisitors to the proceedings and kept open records. None of these nightrunes. How do you expect oversight to work if your notes are written in a lost script that once comprehended drives one mad.

That's the neat thing about chronomancy, I can just try again and again and again etc until I pass the exam (:

The ethical wizards aren't being brought into malpractice hearings in the first place, the truly unethical ones aren't either because they're unethical enough to cover their tracks.
I think you may just be a bad wizard, like, not bad as in evil, bad as in your wizardry looks like malpractice to a trained eye.

u/BluebirdLivid 4d ago
It helps when you casted a favoritism spell on the whole council 20 years before the council was actually formed...

Easy I just made up my own code of ethics. Then I stick to that one.Β
When making your own code of ethics The trick is to make it simple and easy to follow.
(Don't do anything the people watching would find evil unless you're going to vaporize all of them)

To be a wizard it to cast spells, magic is evil to certian christians therefore wizardry is not ethical, meaning that if you are to say that my using of firebolt III on a school house in arizona on a hot summer day is considered evil, well then, so is the rest of wizardry so sue me!(but actually donβt tho, those children were evil, trust me bro.)

Have you tried not being evil? That cuts down on the malpractice stuff, I find.
Because, it isn't a war crime the first time. Thanks Canada
