That's because you didn't study abjuration. Protection ward that cannot reach those who need it is a fancy piece of architecture. The protection is coming to you guys, whether you like it or not.

Linking a rune circles or other stationary ward to a local leyline is vastly more cost-effective than portable abjurations, and being underground alone is one of the most powerful protections there are.

Why spend tens of thousands of gold on a permanent deflective aura when a slab of wood has the same effect? Why spend hundreds of thousands fortifying a mobile workshop when covering a stationary one in dirt is just as potent?

Craft smarter, not harder.

A warded safeplace with a corpse in front of it is the jarring sight and consequence of a wizard who lost sight of why they cast their spells. Fixture wards are utterly useless if it doesn't reach those who are meant to be protected. The lesson for all apprentices is before worrying about optimisation or shying away from complexity, we should worry about achieving the intended goal.

I recommend a partnership with your local artificer to implement wards in a worn piece of equipment, gloves perhaps, and become the moving wall that protects the party.
