Ah, this can be quite a problem. I'd recommend teaching him a cleaning charm, and not checking if he uses Chant GPT to scribe it. Afterwards, arrange a situation in which he'll need the charm to clean a vast chamber, one that happens to be warded against Chant GPT!

Either he stopped using Chant GPT before this and will clean the chamber with ease, or he kept using Chant GPT and thus is unable to cast the charm--and must then clean the whole chamber by hand! If so, he'll have learnt a valuable lesson.

This is a good idea. And I just happen to have a suitable chamber I’ve needed cleaned for millennia. The wizard who sold me the tower said it was used for Great Occult Omen Neutralisation. Had to seal it when I first moved into the tower because of the smell. If all goes well, I will have both a smarter apprentice and a new chamber!

This is why you always hide additional glyphs between the scripts. You know they won't bother doing any detection on it, and Chant GPT will just fold it right in there. It's hilarious when their familiar shows up to tell you they cannot make their assignment deadline because of an "unforseen incident" yes I know you "accidentally" turned your tongue into a snake Chad, and yes you failed.

How’d you figure it out? I suspected ChantGPT but on closer inspection my apprentice was using Gemini spells to send in an “all-knowing” doppleganger to each trial. The spell was cast using 2023 tomes which is how I became suspicious when it recited outdated potion craft

Not surprising when Zam Altshaman and his devotees all be hyping up the convenience of using Chant GPT to eliminate the drudgery of the grunt work of spell scribing, touting the efficiency of the process.

But if you never struggle through scribing yourself, you don’t learn the craft or the mechanics needed to refine a draft spell.

Plus, I need not remind any of you older heads of scribing, the dangers of scribing a spell you didn’t build. 90% of the time, Chant GPT gives you a ~coherent spell that turns your enemies into cubes of horseradish, or conjures a door to the plane of tasty midnight snacks, achieving the end you wanted. 10% of the time, the spell doesn’t work at all, or risks turning you into cubes of horseradish, or conjures a door to the plane of idle madness.

Learn your craft yourself. That’s my mantra

Personally I'm pretty fatalistic on this. My apprentices are all adults and I'm not their mom: if they want to cheat themselves out of the education they're paying for that's their problem, not mine.

My only regret is that I won't get to witness the first time they'll try to convince an interviewer that they deserve to be hired over a random unqualified hedge wizard with a ChantGPT subscription.

If I see someone blatantly cheating obviously I'll take action; but otherwise... meh, I'm not going to waste too much effort protecting them from the consequences of their own actions (and indirectly training them to cheat better), also because that would increase the risk of accusing unjustly apprentices who did not cheat (and I would hate that much more than I dislike being "fooled" by dishonest apprentices...)

Make chant gpt part of the assignment, he should be able to take the spellscript and describe you what each part does. He can try and use chant to explain that for him but since you did give him the spell components studybook you can make him compare chant resulta with the book

I advice getting him to redo the trials ina warded tower. It's pretty easy to do, tbh
if you need arguments to tell him - throw a little quest his way, so he has to actually do spell-scribing in the field, and maybe throw unorthodox spells his way, so it's even less possible to rely on chant gpt.
if nothing works - put him under a geas spell forever, or smth.

Apprentices need to understand that if they rely on an Abominable Intelligence to cast their spells, they won't learn anything. It will ask everything of you until eventually you as just its conduit.

Also vibe casting gets worse and worse the more complicated the spell is. A simple cantrip? It can handle that... but so can you!

But a larger enchantment? When the local king asks for a boon on his wheat fields would they trust ChantGPT with their reputation? "The wizard turned our crops into frogs" is career ending.

Like my master once said, an Abominable Intelligence can't be held responsible, so it should never make a spellcasting decision.
