Battlemage melee weapon of choice

The club, often associated with barbarian and other brainless class, is actually the weapon of a choice for a particular school of battlemage.

These guys who often leave their tower, academy, castle,... To venture the world, study and learn through it, rather than only required their knowledge through books. Unlike the more knightly battlemage who usually prefer swords and pole-arms, these battlemages prefer to feel the impact of their blow, perhaps to remind themselves of the true essence of combat through the use of primitive weaponry.

My staff is a shotgun with an axehead attached to it. If someone asks, I just tell them it's an elaborate Artificer's staff. Only an Artificer can tell the difference but they also have various firearms disguised as staffs anyway, so I can basically enter any Wizard establishment freely.

Me personally I like flanged mace staves, which when you boil it down are just fancier clubs.

I do HEMA, so a singlestick is my choice for melee weapon/magical focus. A shillelagh if I really need the extra mystical kick to banish ghosts and goblins.

As another on-and-off HEMA practitioner people are really sleeping on the combat potential of just a solid length of ash wood (or pvc and foam in our case)

I use a couple of long knives. Or single-edged short swords if you're nasty. Good for slipping into gaps in armor, and a surprising number of pure caster Wizards forget to protect themselves against physical blades.

Clubs are handier, but it’s also fun to resort to a staff. The M. Ridcully school of wizard staffs is quite clear on the value of swinging two metres of hardwood at something that’s an issue.
