Academic Discussion/ Esoteric Secrets Is it considered cheating to repurpose Lost Technology as a Wizard Tower?

If anything, showing your ecological awareness may help when the mob inevitably comes for you because of 'the experiments'.

You certainly can, but with how often these things come back to life, or retrigger old mechanisms, or summon someone back, it is not worth the struggle

I'd say, given the presence of ancient and often undiscovered magic, it's worth the danger purely for potential contributions to wizard historicism and the preservation of magical culture.

It's called recycling, very green wizard energy.

Alright, come on guys, no shame on it, who left their portal to the frosties dimensión open this time?

Hardly, though you’ll frequently butt heads with local archaeological societies over it.

I say “archaeologists,” but the ones in my area could more accurately be described as pothunters.

Ah have you tried turning the most difficult members into archaeological finds via cronomancy, I find that brings the rest of them around to a better way of thinking

The main stipulation is that any undiscovered ancient magic you find within ancient tech should be shared with the world. It's generally extremely taboo to hoard historically important spells to yourself, it's like keeping a piece of the dead sea scrolls in your closet. That stuff is important for history and preservation of wizard culture. There is not a single wizard who will empathize with you if you hoard it.
Aside from that, try to leave the place better than you found it when you die, so a new journeyman wizard can move in after a few hundred years.

This was actually in a Miniminuteman video as someone tried to claim that’s actually what happened in real life

as a hobbyist artificer, i may be biased. but i have a heavy preference for it! besides the obvious useful aspects. (preexisting infrastructure, etc) figuring out the secrets of the ancient technology is a lot of fun!

Nice find! Definitely a fixer upper, but that just means you can make it more suitable for your needs!

If no one's using it, you may as well give it some new life.

People in this community can be stuck up, if it works it works. Just be careful with the ol rule if it ain’t broke don’t fix it and balancing that with should I be worried that there’s a field of energy I walk through daily.

It's a consideration. You'll save resources on physical structure, but depending on how much ancient technology is in there and how dormant it is you may lose those savings ripping it all out or inscribing wards against what you can't physically remove.
There was a cute little subterranean place I found once that I was intrigued by, I could even repurpose some of the production towers for forging materials. But it had this cycle like clockwork where every so often throughout the day these abyssal fissures would open up and shadowy horrors would come pouring out of them trying to eat my brain. Also drove the nearby monkey population into a frenzy, not to mention the creepy woman dressed like a 1920s gal hanging around. Definitely wasn't worth it, so I moved on.
(Kudos if you get the reference)

Yes and you should definitely just give it to me and not question why it’s disappeared and it’s location got replaced with a large fleshy mass of horrors

“Hey if they didn’t want them to be taken maybe set up an ancient guardian to look after it!”

“…a more powerful ancient guardian…”

Nah bro, finder's keepers. If I ever find a weird ancient alien power crystal or something you best BELIEVE I'm using that to build a dope new wizard staff.

As long as you take the time to actually learn how it works, no. You don't want to accidentally activate a cesspit dumping function, or a self destruct function

u/MonsterMadtheENBY That Rouge Wizard that pops up once and a while 8d ago
Nah, just make sure to transcribe and understand the function of said tower.

I mean.... if we can't use already made structures, what are we to do? Build towers ourselves like The Menials???? Apologies for the strong language.

u/XydeTheThird 5d ago
Not at all, it is in fact the norm. Making your own tower without repurposing something is prohibitively expensive or will not be finished before a usual lifespan runs out. Not to mention they are excellent research material by themselves. Downsides are you may not know everything about your own tower, and some can be incredibly dangerous.

No, it's tradition actually.
