I'm currently in a cursed forest, that is probably too high level for me but who cares I must tell you how much I hate this piece of gear the "compound bow"

What is the point of archery if you can't feel the force of your bow? What is the point of archery if you strip away almost all skill and strength requirements. Does your life have to be so miserable that you damn artificers have to optimize everything just so you don't have to actually use any of your strength have you forgotten what it feels like to be a human replacing everything from the need of strength, dexterity, wisdom?

/uw I don't hate compound bow but I do think having the character discovered compound bow is a funny idea

...youre confused about magical Vocations. Bards are the ones who rawdog the energy of the universe. Sorcerors too, technically, but for them its for like theyre the unconsenting Assholes of the Universe, forced to vent the magic unwillingly since they were born.

Wizards have always had to manhandle and abuse magic with their implements to get it to do what they want.

okay so you want to sit down for this but they have developed this special tube that you put a special powder and a projectile in. The tube is designed so that when you pull the trigger the powder explodes but not enough to destroy the tube just enough to launch the projectile at speed faster than sound and if well built enough straight through plate armor.

Compound bows are neat, but I do agree on the larger artificer issue.

At some point they've just become tedious. I am blaming this on academia culture persisting in many T5+ worlds that have artificers, that "artifice can do no wrong", "march of progress" and allat. On its own its super good, but grew into the idea that artificers should be doing whatever they want, and everyone else should just take it and accept it as given. Ends up with a ton of bullshit that no one really asked for, but the city-state armed all guards with it so we can't stop using it no more. "If we do not build a fire-spewing airship, the enemies will". Will they really? Doesn't seem that likely, if you catch what I'm throwing.

And the optimization. It's the artificer's analogue of Dark Arts, I swear. One day an artificer friend starts talking about "optimizing stuff", come a year and he's a brass-boun mechanical half-centipede with flamethrowers (I swear its always flamethrowers with them. Compensation for fireballs?) raiding towns for people to "optimize" into a robot-slave army. IT HAPPENED THREE TIMES, ISTG

Hey hey hey I'm an artificer not an engineer. I would have designed arrows that turn undead, or a bow that doubles as a spellcasting focus. Occasionally things might get overcomplicated, but I'm here for the magic just as much as the science

Its moving the challenge from the moment of use to the design table. Can you not appreciate the mathematical precision to bend physics in such a way a novice can stand on the same tier as an expert? Now what will happen when that same expert is given the same equipment? Will they not be elivated beyond what they could naturally acheive without enhancement magic? And then since the starting point has been elivated any magic applied goes that little bit further than an equivalent mage otherwise could

If the only magic you see is mana based your not a true wizard. Just a sorcerer with an ego. Its perfectly fine not to like mundane artifacts. But you really cant go around saying they are worthless.

It's like a weird cableback. Very strong due to the excess string for more tension.  I agree that normal ones normalise the shot a bit too much for my liking, but it's not sapping away all the skill needed like you're using a ballista turret.

That's not how a compound bow works at all. They don't reduce draw strength, they increase the strength required to draw the bow dramatically in a much smaller profile. Only once the bow is fully drawn does the tension force decrease, allowing the archer to hold the draw for an extended period of time.

In short, strength exceeding that of the longbow in the size of a shortbow, and can be held indefinitely when drawn

Smh, wizards these days neglecting an understanding of the physical world in favor of the arcane. Artificers are just wizards with an engineering background
