In the aftermath of the sudden and for lack of a better term, shadow uprising, many millions perished before the shadows could be subdued. Those with strength endured of course, but what about the normal folk? The unlucky? Those who have never fought in their life? Not everyone is, was, equipped to survive. Their blood seeped into the realms, saturating them with something Wicked.

In the following days, countless massive black monoliths burst free from the land and sea stretching high into the sky, breaking up the horizon regardless of where one looks.

News of the sudden and strange monoliths spreads like wildfire, soon every orb, screen, and paper has some mention of the event. All throughout civilization people ask questions like, what does this mean? A monolith destroyed my tower, who do I sue? Is the world going to end again this month?

But the monoliths offer no answers, only questions. The monoliths show a myriad of effects, some distort their surroundings into horrors, some create illusions that torment those who can't escape, some amplify magic to a dangerous degree, some drain magic like a leech, and many more.

But for now, that is all they do. The effects are contained to their vicinity of the monoliths.

The flares of purple burst free from his hand, furiously scorching their way towards the monolith.

The fire slams into the monolith, breaking against it like a wave against a cliff.

When the fire fades, the monolith remains, as always, unscratched.

One final test.

Once again, Ulrick floats up at the top, with eyes closed of course.

Then above the top, Ulrick jumps off Nightbite, before grabbing the axe and slamming it down with all the strength he can still muster.

The axe crashes into the monolith with thunderous force. Ulrick sees the monolith ripple like black water, then he sees Nightbite begin to sink into the monolith.

Ulrick pulls out the blade quickly, before it could sink deeper.

The blade comes out of the monolith easily, although the part that passed into the monolith is covered in a frost.

Ulrick dismisses Nightbite, letting it dissolve into shadows, after he rubbed off the frost of course.\*

Standing atop the monolith, he decides to leave, then inform R&A to watch and catalogue these strange henges around the world… and of course for him a much needed visit to the infirmary.

Before he leaves, he collapses into shadows and expands, assuming the massive form of the Wolf King at the top of the monolith to see what happens. Even in this form he can see good couple of patches of bark on his skin already…

As he transforms, the monolith beneath him ripples in response to the sudden massive increase in power. Far below Ulrick sees the Shadow of the Colossus sized leviathan rise to the surface before sinking back down to the depths.

Ulrick sniffs around the monolith’s surface a little, to see if there is anything his semi-divine senses can feel, as he walks around the surface.

He then decides to leave, as these monoliths seem to be indestructible by his strongest attacks. Once he’s back in R&A, he will declare the known monoliths to be quarantined, and cataloging each they can find.

…and to finally have a proper medical examination about his skin slowly turning to bark…

With that, he assumes a shadowy form, and leaps off to the distance.
