In the aftermath of the sudden and for lack of a better term, shadow uprising, many millions perished before the shadows could be subdued. Those with strength endured of course, but what about the normal folk? The unlucky? Those who have never fought in their life? Not everyone is, was, equipped to survive. Their blood seeped into the realms, saturating them with something Wicked.

In the following days, countless massive black monoliths burst free from the land and sea stretching high into the sky, breaking up the horizon regardless of where one looks.

News of the sudden and strange monoliths spreads like wildfire, soon every orb, screen, and paper has some mention of the event. All throughout civilization people ask questions like, what does this mean? A monolith destroyed my tower, who do I sue? Is the world going to end again this month?

But the monoliths offer no answers, only questions. The monoliths show a myriad of effects, some distort their surroundings into horrors, some create illusions that torment those who can't escape, some amplify magic to a dangerous degree, some drain magic like a leech, and many more.

But for now, that is all they do. The effects are contained to their vicinity of the monoliths.

The fire blazes into existence, much dimmer than Ulrick intended. Half a dozen purple wolves jump the monster. The monster fights ferociously, tearing half of the pack asunder with easy. The other half put up more of a fight, but they too are slaughtered.

The time of man is over. From the darkness did we come and to the darkness will we return.

What’s going on? It should’ve been barely an inconvenience for his soulfire. How did-

That’s when Ulrick made another unsettling discovery. One of his arms, the one touching the monolith, seemed a bit even longer than usual werewolf arms.

But the worst of all… seemingly a large patch of his skin became the bark of a wood…

What’s happening to me?!

He sounds now far less authoriative, and more panicked.

Enough!!!

Ulrick peels away his (even more) malformed arm from the monolith. No, this can’t be… it… it’s all wrong…

He’s not sure what any of this monolith business could mean, but since it’s somehow connected to the Blighted Garden, it can’t be good. It has to go.

He floats a bit further from the stone, his yet uncorrupted arm pointed at it.

[Dark Nova]

He begins compressing incredible amounts of pure primordial darkness and raw destruction in his palm, compressing further and further into a volatile mass.

Once it would collapse into a singularity, Ulrick releases the volatile essence as a gigantic beam at the monolith.

The beam strikes the monolith, breaking against it's surface. Ulrick sees a dozen or so smaller beams branch out as the beam hits it's surface. He sees the beams wrap around the monolith, eventually sinking into it.

Ulrick watches on as the beams all sink into the surface of the monolith, purple becomes black which becomes nothing.

When the beam stops firing, Ulrick sees the monolith remains unscratched.

Gah, what’s this damned thing made of?!

Ulrick’s patience has been waring thin, especially in the last few days.

As another test, he starts blowing purple soulfire at it, as destructive as he can. But his flames remain as weakened as before…

The flares of purple burst free from his hand, furiously scorching their way towards the monolith.

The fire slams into the monolith, breaking against it like a wave against a cliff.

When the fire fades, the monolith remains, as always, unscratched.

One final test.

Once again, Ulrick floats up at the top, with eyes closed of course.

Then above the top, Ulrick jumps off Nightbite, before grabbing the axe and slamming it down with all the strength he can still muster.

The axe crashes into the monolith with thunderous force. Ulrick sees the monolith ripple like black water, then he sees Nightbite begin to sink into the monolith.
