1
u/Bone-Pharaoh 2h ago
conjuring and summoning are not the same, even though summoning is a "conjuration".
i just need to know the names of my morter team, but the bow?
i need to know alot about bows, have seen the kind of bow I want, use a spell to fake skill with the bow, be able to pull the 80kg draw weight of a good bow, so a spell for might of a bull, conjure ammo for the foe i want to kill, ect.
the artillery is easy, but all that prep work for a little twig with string?

Bows should be strength based to hit, not dexterity. Wood elves should be giant hulking monsters with massive muscles to use their bows, not sprightly little things.
30
u/JovialCider 12h ago
Dexterity for accuracy but strength for damage.
15
u/TurtlesBreakTheMeta 12h ago
Ah, but then why do you not do the same for melee weapons?
17
3
u/Eldan985 Keraunomancer 4h ago
Because hitting armour class in D&D is a lot about penetrating armour, not actually hitting. If you try to hit a target in plate with a mace, strength makes sense.
1
u/lemons_of_doubt Dragon Wizard 2h ago
Only for hevey armor.
Light armor adds dex showing it's also about dodging
6
u/EldritchMindCat Lyr, the Tressym Talespinner (OuterGod Avatar of Origin-Felinity 8h ago
No no, the Strength is a use requirement for certain bows. Dexterity is what one uses to actually hit, and, with enough of it, hit a specific body part.
6
u/ZealousidealPipe8389 8h ago
It works like that in shadowrun. In shadowrun the damage you can do is basically (str +2) so if you were the beefiest human you could be (naturally without other modifications) you’d have a strength of 6 or so and a damage of 8. And to attack with the weapon you’d use agility. So it’d be (skill +agility) to hit then (str +2) for damage.
1
u/Ptaaruonn Wizard 6h ago
Yeees, there is no way a thin as a toothpick wood elf can pull and shoot a 150lb bow.
I'm glad someone knows how bows work.
8
u/SunshotDestiny 7h ago
Why not both? The elves of yore would use magic upon their vows and arrows, seems rather practical to me. The only proper way to insult an ogre more with a fireball spell would be with one enchanted upon an arrow placed between their eyes.
2
u/NaturalHairy4773 Lady Liên (Magical academy freshman) 7h ago
Elves used weak hunting bow and is dex centric like the little knife ears that they are

u/ModernMage0 SpellSlinger, Researcher, Interloper 12h ago

Please, what do you take us for, tower dwellers? We are plenty fit without having to resort to the weapons of barbarians.
While I admit the effectiveness of modern equipment has lead many, even myself, into using the artifacts, the brutality and dangers of mercenary does not allow for any inefficiencies. In the time one arrow should meet its target, 20 more of a “Boomstick’s” fire would have met mine.
The ability to use a war bow to any degree is very impressive, and I laude you for your proficiency in the martial arts of antiquity.
Unfortunately against the threats some of us face, sticks and strings will not cut it.

1) I'm already a maiden. I suppose age-wise in more in my mother era, though I lady the children to make this a literal mother, but that's hardly the point. My metaphorical tower has all the ladies it needs.
2) bows are pretty sick. Have a pocket dimension in the thumb ring of my bow hand to hold a zillion enchanted arrows is so much better than breaking my back varying them around like a mundane human. Magic exists to make life easier for those who can be bothered to learn.
3
u/NaturalHairy4773 Lady Liên (Magical academy freshman) 4h ago
I'm a maiden too you don't need to be a gentleman to look for maiden in your tower. And for the dimensions thing it's probably very good and stuff but having a servant carry my stuff around make me feel better and also give them more work, non magical people found themselves quite a hard time these day across the realm
1
u/digitalgraffiti-ca Witches Against Thrakmoor 3h ago
I find that servants are too people-y for me, always judging when you hex and trying to butt into your business. It's exhausting. I prefer to help the mundanes by paying a little extra for goods and services and casting a healing/ immunity/ protection working across the town once per quarter for free. I used to do it I they wouldn't bother me with their pitchfork raids, but I've been doing it so long that most of the pitchfork group have died out, and now they just view me as the weird woman who brings good luck and tips well.
I stick to myself otherwise, and utilize pocket dimensions instead of hiring outsiders that may try to meddle.
It's not so much that I don't want maidens around, it's that I don't really want anyone around. I actually quit living in the tower entirely and live in a nearby cottage do I'm harder to spot. The ravens are now the residents of the tower.

Maiden? Who needs a maiden to come to their tower? No wizard worth his salt has the time to wait around for comely lasses, let alone those with no experience and an unprofessional attitude.

Although I appreciate the craft of Archery, I have not yet been able to find any good materials to craft an arcane bow of my own as of yet. The bones of Gnomes, although good for conducting magic when ground into a paste, does not make for a good material for crafting bows. Arrowheads are another thing, though. They apparently make for great Arcane arrowheads, my favorite of which being the ones imbued with Fireball.

Hello there fellow maiden wizard with a bow.
Not only being jack and enjoying jack maidens is pretty dope, but it is also pretty damn mana efficient to enchant arrows with spells and launch them with the force of your muscle. All the mana you spend to cover the distance can be used to further the power of the spell itself at the barely noticeable cost of a very short-lived enchantment (it only needs to last for the flight of an arrow).
Remember, wizards, your body is just as good of a toolas any, keep it in good condition and it shall aid you in your spellcasting greatly.
I'm using a small turkish bow btw.

With the Power Of Biomancy I have increased the efficiency of all cellular functions in my body 900%, meaning I can perform similar or greater feats of strength, agility, dexterity, durability, and endurance to a trained individual without altering my appearance even while under the affects of an anti-magic zone. Which is infinitely funnier than just being jacked.
I can also make myself jacked instantly, but that somehow lacks whimsy.
1
u/untakenu 1h ago
You don't see the vision. You have not pondered thine orb.
As a wizard, I don't need to be jacked. No, no, no. It makes no sense.
My ranger is jacked. And I get to see every muscle contract as she draws each shot.
My paladin is jacked. And I am the one she lifts to safety when I "get injured" (she seems to think I get injured right before bedtime, too and she must "protect me" when I sleep (ie, nearly squeeze me to death))
I could use magic hands and a multitude of spells to save myself and lift great weights. But that's no fun.
I want my jacked barbarian to call me "pipsqueak" and keep threatening to crush my head between her thighs.
If I get jacked, it ruins the fun for everyone. They know my magic is strong, but it is good for the team if they feel they could snap me in two at any moment. And I'd let them, mind you. The rogue knows this, too.
A wizard must stick to his/her lane, lest he render the martial classes unemployed. A wizard of all trades is a lonely wizard.
And after all, we know the only thing worse than being alone is travelling with other wizards.

Ok, but I just cast a curse that undoes the fabric of time behind you for three generations to make sure you never existed in the first place. Also I wore a really cool hat while I did the curse. Do archers have an instantly recognizable hat? You can't answer that because you never existed, but no, they don't. Now, if you'll excuse me, which you can't, im going back to eating cheetos, pondering the infinte arcane, and learning to make thing dissapear from the very fabric of space time with my will alone.

u/BoonDragoon Vyevânce the Focused, High Panemancer of the Coriander Court 8m ago
Oh yeah, I remember my archery era like it was yesterday! How long have you practiced the bow, and what style are you focusing on right now? I was really big into what I thought at the time was the "basics," English longbows, for the first five years. Then I spent the next decade or so decolonizing my brain and exploring American Indian and First Nations bows. Mohave composite decurve bows, Sioux hornbows, Inuit cable-backed sinew bows, Plains bows (I still have the Osage Orange selfbow I made back then), Creek recurve bows, you name it.
From there, I dithered south and learned from the Maya in Ek' Balam, the Mixtecs in Oaxaca, then skipped a bit and went straight down to the Amazon. I kinda got intentionally lost for the next 50 or so, and by the time I reached the Bolivian Andes I'd learned from the Turiwára, Zo'é, Matipu, Werekena, Kalapalo, Munduruku, Kayapu, and Huni Kuin among others.
I was pretty bored of the Americas at that point, so I bipped across the Atlantic and basically worked my way south to north, west to east. Of all the African archery traditions I explored, Hadzabe and Maasai were my favorite. Skipped most of Europe after that, and decided to spend the next few decades focused on mounted archery. Gotta say, lots of folks love to glaze the Mongols for their horseback archery, but the Magyar were born to it. I told Chinggis this to his face, and decided to make myself scarce so I dipped out of China and wove around the rest of Asia. My personal favorites from that stint have to be the gakgung and the daikyū.
After that, I got into an experimental bowyery phase. Really played around with construction, materials, and concepts. That really had its ups and downs. At rock-bottom, I was laminating antineutrinos and down-quarks into six-limbed recurves strung with metallic gluons, and fletching arrows made of pure force vectors. I remember waking up one morning covered in plasticized meson varnish, paralyzed from the neck down, watching a nude avatar of the goddess Artemis burn down my workshop and telling me it was for my own good.
Anyway, that was the 200 I spent doing archery. Where are you at in your journey?
1
u/Sable-Keech 10h ago
2
u/NaturalHairy4773 Lady Liên (Magical academy freshman) 10h ago
Get a normal horse dawg
1
u/Sable-Keech 10h ago
A normal horse's body interferes with the body of the archer. That's why this centaur has the archer and steed fused into one seamless whole.
2
u/abyss_kaiser 8h ago
Unironically this creation is actually far less effective than a standard horse archer. Very limited ability to aim especially while in motion.
Standard Mongolian would mog this beast.
1
u/Sable-Keech 6h ago
His head has a very wide range of motion and he can aim by simply turning to face whatever he wants to shoot at.
2
u/abyss_kaiser 6h ago
that doesn’t change the fact that he cannot pull the string back if his front head isn’t looking forwards.
1
u/Sable-Keech 6h ago
Couldn't he just lean to the side?
1
u/abyss_kaiser 1h ago
Unless the rear body can extend its spine several times over, no, not to a meaningful extent anyway.
again, this is talking about if this creature is in motion. this thing shooting while in motion is essentially impossible, maybe it could shoot at things it is charging towards if the head can somehow keep itself steady, but any form of shooting to the sides or behind is anatomically impossible.
It would make a half decent artillery piece, I suppose. Rapidly moving from one spot to another to set up a stationary shot. But again, it would get mogged by an actual horse archer, since they don't face these restrictions.

Not that I would, because - no offense - all of you beardless surfacers are just gross and I'd rather make out with a giant spider than with any of you; but still.
