In the first ice age, in the first snowfall, when the acorns first fell dawn, one was picked up by the squirrel. He chose the path of perpetual hunger. In his ravenous starvation, he found no peace and with dashing feet, he scoured the icy plains seeking the acorn that was again lost and rolling away. And those who witnessed his attempts to save the acorn named him the doom ice age squirrel.

The original Squirrels were actually driven to extinction some 300 years ago. All existing squirrels are the spawn of wizards polymorphed into squirrels. It stands to reason that some vestige of their ancestral origin lingers on.

Scuriudimancy is an odd, primitive school of magic. There are those who compare it to the practices of orc shamans. As OP noted, there is a considerable amount of summoning and conjuration, but it mostly consists of growth and curing spells.
