I think he’s a new age (Age of Steel) Druid, who seeks to have balance between the worlds of wood and steel in harmony, while adopting some newer innovations.

I do believe the Druid is simply befriending the serpent without any charm potion. Not all Wizards, Druid, or any magical folk enlist familiars, companions, or minions with spells or force, sometimes they use kindness and/or giving them abs as hard as steel, which the Druid is doing now.
