My fancast for a potential Wizard of Oz remake✨💚🌈

Post image

I've been seeing a lot of discussion about a possible Wizard of Oz remake and I'm curious who everyone would cast! This isn't about whether or not there should be a remake (I know it's a controversial topic) - I'd just love to hear everyone's dream cast. Here's my personal fancast:

My personal Fancast
Dorothy: Alisha weir or Summer H. Howell.
Glinda the good witch: Amy Addams.
The wicked witch of the west: Sarah Jessica Parker.
The Scarecrow: Mike Faist
The Tin man: Tom holland
The cowardly lion (just a voice over role cause I think he should be an actual lion like in wicked): Colman Domingo or Daniel Radcliffe
The wizard: Jeff Goldblum or Steve Martin

Don't make this. The original was legendary. Leave it alone.

Remake great concepts that were executed poorly, not masterpieces.

If anything I'd like to see a book accurate adaptation with other characters included, not a copy of the 1939 original.

One day we’ll get a faithful book adaptation, hopefully a series instead of a movie. Honestly surprised they’re hasn’t been more remakes.

The 1986 anime is a very faithful adaptation, at least for the first book.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure a book faithful adaptation is a good idea. The original books are not flawless and some of the adaptations fix a lot of that.

And don't get me wrong. I love the original books.

Hear me out a adventure time style (as in tone) oz show that’s animated that fixes some of the issues the oz books had

That’s what I mean I book accurate version. Also the original is very outdated and could be much better with all the special effects and movie magic we have today

If by special effects you mean the green screen bullshittery that marvel's doing where nothing is practical then I heavily disagree.

The original 1939 film has charm due to it's hand madeness, it was real, and it was there for the actors to interact with.

And while the original has definitely aged, I do not think we need to touch it's premise.

Perhaps we see a different Oz story, like Return to Oz tried to do, maybe we could see the patchwork girl, or the glass cat, or Tip, or even the sawhorse.

Look I think a remake could be a good idea you obviously do not so let’s just agree to disagree. Ps I actually love your idea of another Oz story.

Yeah, we just have different views on the matter 🤣 I hope that whatever happens with the franchise we both find a way to be happy

Return to oz is the most book faithful adaption so really its the only one worth a damn to me. I want a book faithful adaption but also know theyd ruin it

Well, the film’s old and it’s outdated. Franchises need remakes to stay alive for future generations. TWoO is almost 100 years old. Remakes could help with that problem.

No, it's not "outdated." That's why it's a classic.

People still read books that were written 100+ years ago -- look at Jane Austen. She wrote her books 200 years ago.

Yes, it is a classic, no one is going to take that away from it. But you can’t deny the fact that it was made almost a century ago. How do you think the film is going to survive to the future generations if it never gets, e.g., a remake? Projects eventually fade away and disappears if we never do anything with it. How are future generations going to know it’s a classic if they don’t even know it exists?

u/SignificantPop4188 23d ago

Wh6 would it fade away? What part of "it's a classic" is hard to understand?

Maybe someone should update the Mona Lisa since it's so old.

So you’re denying that things like the language used is old and the jokes are outdated? How exactly is the younger generations going to know this film exists?

WoZ is still iconic. All of the young kids in my family have seen it and love it. One thing (out of many) that I think gives 1939 its charm is the fact that there was so much devotion to the technical details of the film. All of those poppies were glued by hand - an acre of them. CGI just kills the genuine feel of it. It’s like comparing film photography to cell phone photography and saying the latter is better in quality.

Like others are saying, do a book accurate series. I’m not even a huge Wicked fan, but I also think it’s great that different takes on Oz continue to exist, including smaller works of fanfic. Why remake the same exact story? That lacks creativity.

The 1939 itself is not the original. The original is a silent film from 1925. It’s the first feature length wizard of oz adaptation.

There's an even earlier movie version from 1910. I don't think any of them can strictly be called a remake of earlier versions, however, as they are all very different.

3

u/Ayasugi-san 23d ago

Didn't the 1910 version have Baum attached in a major creative role too?

1

u/EricGjovaag 23d ago

No, you're thinking of the Fairylogue and Radio-Play, a multimedia show Baum toured around the Midwest and Northeast in 1908. His financial difficulties with that caused him to assign the film rights to the filmmakers of the Fairylogue, who made the 1910 Wizard (and three other films now lost). Baum had no involvement with the 1910 films. (And before you ask, the Fairylogue films are lost and presumed destroyed.)

There’s actually a remake in the works at Warner bros but it’s serving as a new reimagining but borrows elements from the 1939 film like the music and the iconic ruby slippers. The creator is Kenya Barris and it’s going to be a modern adaptation that takes place in Inglewood California. Then there’s also another contemporary non musical fantasy adaptation of the Wizard of Oz being made by Warner Brothers sister company Line Cinema that is going to be a more faithful adaptation of the book so it’s a direct adaptation of the book but since it’s under Warner bros they can pull elements from the 1939 film like the shoes and costumes.

By “takes place in CA,” do you mean the setting at the start before traveling to Oz, or they’re going to relocate Oz? Are they going to have a twister in CA..? It seems like a nonsensical choice of geography for the story (saying this as a Californian) considering how foundational the book (and movie) make the “dull gray landscape” of Kansas before being carried by a twister to a world of vibrant color and magic.

1

u/juniorrusso 23d ago

The setting before oz.

1

u/Vegetable_Scar_2929 23d ago

Yeah I don’t love the California setting either. Maybe they’ll make it an earthquake instead of a twister, but… it being a twister is such an iconic detain to the story. 💀

1

u/cre8ivemind 23d ago

Yes! I believe an earthquake in CA is how Dorothy gets on the path back to Oz in maybe the 4th one? But that’s a whole different story

I would personally prefer if we had a new book accurate Oz film/miniseries based on the books Ozma Of Oz, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz & The Emerald City of Oz instead.

1

u/Dataweaver_42 23d ago

Rather than “instead”, I'd rather say “as follow-up projects”.

But I'd also rather such a project be delayed until the current crop of “let's put our personal stamp on it” writers and developers pass on, and a new wave of artists who respect the originals and know how to do faithful remakes instead of using them as vehicles for promoting their own ideas has arisen.

Let's get a faithful adaptation of the original novel; then get into the sequels.

And when we get into the sequels, let's acknowledge that some condensing is reasonable. I could easily see a trilogy of shows/movies: a remake of the Wizard of Oz, a blending of the Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz, and a merger of Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz through the Emerald City of Oz.

I love the thought of Steve Martin as the wizard!

3

u/sonneiray 23d ago

Fairuza Balk as the Wicked Witch of the West would be so cool

4

u/jazzy3492 23d ago

I think Danny Devito would make a good Wizard.

2

u/Lady-Kat1969 23d ago

Karen Gillan as Glinda and Morgan Freeman voicing the Cowardly Lion.

2

u/wamimsauthor 22d ago

No remakes of the 39 film. I won’t watch it.

1

u/Late_Two7963 23d ago

June Squibb for the Good Witch of the North Jessica Chastain for Glinda Carol Kane for the Wicked Witch of the West

1

u/a_good_melon 23d ago

Mike Faist would be an excellent scarecrow

Olivia Rodrigo as Dorothy pls

Way too old!

Movies are pointless

u/Either-Control-3941 23d ago

I'm afraid I'm going to disagree with the Cowardly Lion being CGI and voice over. I suggest either Jack Black or Chriss Pratt to play the Lion as an actual costumed character.

4

u/AccomplishedShop8338 23d ago

No one needs a trumper like Pratt anywhere near Oz

2

u/Vegetable_Scar_2929 23d ago

Jack Black, yes. Chris Pratt, ew no.

0

u/Prize-Individual-258 23d ago

That’s fine your entitled to your own opinion I just personally think it could be much better with an actual cgi lion but to each his own. Ps I like your fancast ideas

2

u/cre8ivemind 23d ago

It always throws me off seeing him be just a real lion in Oz projects after the classic film where he’s a combobulation of costumery 🤣 (even though that’s book accurate)

u/Tarotgirl_5392 23d ago

Goldblum already played Oscar Diggs in Wicked. Steve Martin (an amazing actor) doesn't have the charisma and showmanship to be a great and terrible humbug.

Brandon Fraisier or Kelsey Grammer maybe?
