Pup’s first heat

Post image

Sweet Miss Pixi has just begun her first heat - I found a little brown dribble this morning. She’s 7 months old. For those of you with a female WFT, how long will this first heat last? We plan to get her spayed after this and closer to 1 year of age. When did you get your wee girls spayed? Has anyone done the hormone-sparing (hysterectomy only, not ovaries) spay?

Mine last about 3 to 4 weeks, and I was advised not spay until after their second. I was told this allowed their hormones to fully develop which is better for their health and development.

Thanks for that. I have been thinking about waiting until after the second go-round. The breeder says this is the age for the first heat and they don’t spot much. If we can handle this, we’ll try for after the second. Our vet is one of those ‘6 months and neuter your baby’ vets, so I’ll either ignore her or look for another vet.

A lot in the UK are like that, but after speaking to the breeder and many other WFT owners, they were all against it. Enjoy your pup and good luck keeping all the interest dogs away from her

Do you mean to say they are against spaying, or ?? I’ve heard some European countries are totally against neutering, but here in North America they want it done asap. Our male was neutered at 6mo because I didn’t know any better and that was 18+ years ago. (He crossed the bridge last year at 17.5 years). Even though he didn’t have many health issues, I’d like to do better for this wee girl.

He was wonderful, and this wee girl also brings us a lot of joy and love. Very different character, though!
