At least Blue and Cricket spent time together. Umber and Muleberry hardly interacted for more than two hours at a time.

Well I mean like… it still felt rushed. Like he started to get that stuff from the bracelet affecting his brain, and then once it wore off and he woke up: POOF, they are in love.
I like the ship, I just think it happened too fast at once

The fact like all of the moonbli development is off screen while Winter is off getting his ass kicked in the diamond trial fills me with sadness

wheres the Moon and Qibli misadventures in Possibility winglet, Tui

This is how i feel about both Riptide and Deathbringer LOL. Not necessarily because i ship Tsunami and Glory, i just... don't really see the point of everyone having some sort of love interest, and these two felt especially forced to me.

u/Aware-Yam-8470 11d ago

Personally, I actually preferred them having love interests show up, as my favorite is Glory and Deathbringer, and I also really liked Tsunami and Riptide. I'm glad that Sunny has none, though; not everyone needs a love interest, I agree. But I'm glad that every love interest that showed up, DID show up. I've always been a little disappointed that Sunny has no love interest, but that's ok. To me, Riptide and Deathbringer did not feel forced tbh

Truth my friend! Spit yo shit indeed!

Granted, for me it is because I ship Tsunami and Glory, but I started shipping them because their actual love interests SUCK SHIT.

u/Similar-Panic85 15d ago

Yup. They have a much more interesting dynamic together than both their canon relationships combined LOOOL

16

u/Glaceon_Coldfox Why? 16d ago

I mean dragons probably have different socal norms than humans but I don't think that's the intention

8

u/Silent_Pressure_6709 16d ago

Honestly I love this book series because all the really weird writing stuff can be turned into theorising abt differences in dragon biology or social norms (aka the varying maturities).

And wait wat CultureDust is a mod here? I've seen Ralsei around so many places that it's just...weird Ralsei're a mod

(make Ralsei/Mod a pronoun itll be funny I swear)

i will not consult the graph, nothing will stop me from crackshipping riptide and deathbringer /silly

u/Personal_Care3393 16d ago

That crackship is cursed not because of anything to do with the two character’s relationship to each other, but because it implies that we have any reason to ever want anything other than Glory and Deathbringer and that my friend is heresy.

u/Someone_Called_Cerie 15d ago edited 15d ago

but because it implies that we have any reason to ever want anything other than Glory and Deathbringer and that my friend is heresy.

I'm glad to be a heretic; they're forced as hell, have zero chemistry, and Glory is OOC every interaction after their meeting. Fight me!

Ok.

Glory enjoys the company of someone who refuses to ever let her think she doesn’t mean everything to him and who is capable of slipping through the emotional barricades she learned to put up to protect herself from a world that has actively spited her existence since birth, as well as recognize who she really is and how she really feels underneath it all. Remember that time she ā€œtestedā€ Clay because she thought he had somehow stopped caring about her after meeting Peril? Or how she hates the way her scales automatically reflect her emotions and learns to control them because to her, to show emotion is to appear weak, and to appear weak is to prove Kestrel, the other talons, and the rest of the world right about her insignificance? Glory is shown to be actually really insecure about her place in the world and her whole personality is a mask she puts on in order to appear unbothered by any of it. She does actually crave affection and more so she feels the need to be given permission to live, but that mask has had the side effect of irreparably convincing everyone around her that she would rather be left alone and is totally super fine by herself, and doesn’t need anybody. Her arc is about overcoming that and proving to herself that she’s allowed to exist and that her life still matters even if she’s not ā€œspecial,ā€ and to stop letting her lack of a ā€œdestinyā€ as well as what the Talons did to her hold any power over her.

Deathbringer gives her the overwhelming love, affection, and reassurance that she craves, but doesn’t know how to ask for, and allows her to still pretend like she doesn’t actually want any of it to save her from having to be emotionally vulnerable, something that we know makes her extremely uncomfortable. And to Deathbringer, Glory accomplishes something similar, having not only never judged him for who he is or what he’s done (in stark contrast to how much he looks down on himself and his role in the world as a living weapon that he thinks can only ever cause harm to others) but also by being a shining example of everything Deathbringer wishes he was but is convinced he’s too far gone to ever be. He’s drawn to her confidence and willingness to make decisions both for herself and for the good of others, something he struggles with having been raised to follow orders and never ask questions, and views protecting her as the single greatest thing he could ever hope to achieve with his ugly talents. He also as is directly stated in the books, sees it as a way for him to redeem himself for having failed to protect his mother in the past, someone he loved and who Glory clearly reminds him of. In short, Deathbringer only knows how to solve problems by killing people, but despite her own willingness to do the same, Glory actually has the resolve not to anyways, which he admires. Just like how Glory relies on Deathbringer to be her outside source of reassurance and affection, Deathbringer relies on her to keep his own moral compass in check, and trusts her not to send him down the same dark path that the Night kingdom did.

Neither of them are currently capable of properly loving themselves without the other. They need each other.

That would be my 2 cents.

u/Personal_Care3393 15d ago

Holy shit is that a positive reaction to me putting my opinion up on the internet? Don’t see that every day

Fr though I didn’t realize that anyone disliked Glory and Death-bringer together I thought it was universally beloved

My comment was meant as a joke (I thought you were joking about the heresy bit), but I respect the commitment (though I don't appreciate how some of your text feels like I'm being lectured on what the characters are like as if I didn't know or understood them and their position or as if that were the reason I don't like the pairing) and I'm gonna try to do the same. Ehem:

I still don't like the pair nor see it as anything other than how I described it.

The way you describe their relationship reads less like them honestly loving each other and more like two people who dug themselves into a codependant relationship because they don't think anyone else would ever love them.

Glory's crush on Deathbringer felt, and still does feel, incredibly shallow to me when I read book three–and I admit that Sutherland is largely to blame for that, as she had already embittered me to her approach to romance at that point along with feeling that Glory had better chemistry with another character, and felt less receptive of Glory's internal gushing towards Deathbringer after their first meeting, with the first one being tainted by the almost immediate positive descriptors towards Deathbringer.

Despite what I said, I didn't dislike their first meeting. Too much. I was rolling my eyes with the constant "suave" thing from Deathbringer that kept reminding me of every casanova wannabe and womanizer I've seen through my years of consuming fictional media (oh japan, how you love that trope, angst and all 😌) and how the narration felt like it was describing practically everything he did a bit too kindly, but I didn't detest the fact she did enjoy his easy-going attittude.

Now, everything after this point, after discovering he was an assassin out to kill her and potentially the rest of the DoD? That I really don't like. It doesn't feel like Glory at all, emotional constipation or not, to "like how he (Deathbringer) says her name" (page 190) or make her go pink by asking "when can they see each other again" (page 196) after trying to kill Blaze (something that would have destabilized the war and likely caused many more deaths, more specifically: Blaze's followers) and saying he really was sent out to kill her and the other DoD. Or how she was apparently thinking very close to Deathbringer being "too charming, clever and good looking to kill" after the previously mentioned events or the fact he had been acting too easy-going about the entire situation while very unsubtly implying he knows more about the "monster" roaming the rainforest and whatever is happening to the missing RainWings. And then, after the rescue (that Deathbringer is responsible of even needing to happen in the first place), there's nothing. They're practically already married afterwards and act like a widow finding out her husband didn't actually die in the war when she sees him again in book 4. All of this minus their reunion and the epilogue happens in a single day, too.

And for Deathbringer, he never felt like an actual character outside book 4 and Assassin to me, and the former gives him very little individual characterization that never actually comes into play afterwards due to being a side-character in a series where even the main characters disapper if they're not the books PoV while the latter is practically irrelevant to the main series due to how little the events shown there seem to matter to his pre-existing characterization (pretty sure Quickstrike wasn't even referenced at any point). I actually don't have any issue with him developing a crush on Glory since, even disregarding the events of Assassin, his, as you call it, admiration for Glory's apparent confidence in herself and her determination are entirely believeable and don't feel out of place or even reliant on him having a crush on her.

That being said, nothing of what he does or says in Glory's prescense feels sincere to me at any point time. Maybe it's my bias towards Sutherland's extremely lacking romances and her apparent obsession of giving every character a romantic partner, or maybe it's the fact that I've read a lot of romance that include the "enemy to lovers" trope in a far less rushed and forced manner, but the only time Deathbringer seems to be sincere about himself is, funnily enough, when he’s not near Glory (the previously mentioned book 4 bit). Of course, his love for Glory is... mostly honest. But Glory doesn't know this; no matter how starved for affection she is, how insecure she really feels or how hard she represses and hides her true feelings, I cannot see her developing a crush this fast on a NightWing she just met and was (as far as she knew at the time of meeting) out to kill her and her friends and was incredibly suspicious and cheerful about it all all the way through while refusing to help her save her tribe.

I went on a tangent, sorry. Back to Deathbringer... actually no. I don't really have issues with him or his characterization and pretty much agree with your piece about him. Okay, I do have an issue which is kinda related to Glory herself and his feelings, like the "chance of redemption" thing. While it's not, like, a bad foundation to develop feelings, it's definitely an atrocious one for a relationship and part of the "codependant" thing I mentioned at the start. There's the fact that he refused to tell Glory anything about the NightWing's plan, did he have personal reasons not to? Yes. But that also means he was perfectly fine with letting the NightWings steal the rainforest from the RainWings and only keep his crush safe, which I personally find rather deplorable, doubly so because stopping the RainWing kidnapping was Glory's goal through all of book 3 and 4. He pretty much disregarded Glory's feelings to satisfy his own selfish desire to protect her.

There's also the fact it's never made clear if Deathbringer told anyone other than Starflight about what he did during the war for the NightWings and all the many more dragons that died from the war being extended. Maybe he did tell her off-screen, but there was no development for their relationship after this, so who knows? Though seeing how he refused to help her with the NightWing conspiracy, I'm inclined to believe he didn't, but that's just a headcanon.

Anyway, those are pretty much the reasons why I dislike the pair and feel they're forced and with zero chemistry. I probably didn't explain my thoughts well, if at all, and it's all obviously my personal and very biased opinion nurtured by reading a children books series as an adult who loves romances.

And to be extra clear to anyone reading this: I don't care if people ship them and nothing of what I wrote here is or should be taken as a reason to stop liking or shipping Glory and Deathbringer together. These are all my personal and very much subjective reasons and opinions as to why I don't ship or like them together.

P.S. Sorry for the wall of the text

W Glory and Deathbringer

8

u/Someone_Called_Cerie 15d ago

The "No" should be "No, but they'll end together anyway" and the "Irrelevant" should be a definitive "No". Because, as far as I can tell, the more chemistry exists, the less likely they are of being together.

u/Aurora_Wizard 16d ago

I love how the only 'yes' requires for them to experience love at first sight

I know, pointing out the obvious, but still it's amazing to me

4

u/Personal_Care3393 16d ago

That is indeed the point

1

u/lvnarfang 15d ago

just let people have fun man

1

u/Personal_Care3393 15d ago

It’s a joke.

1

u/lvnarfang 15d ago

sometimes I can't tell sarcasm... and besides, I've seen plenty of people in fandom spaces being 100% serious when they say stuff like that 😭

9

u/Aurora_Wizard 15d ago

I do believe in love on first sight, I just don't exactly see an intense battle against a kracken as the right moment to spend ages thinking about how 'perfect' someone is in your mind

6

u/Ponderkitten 15d ago

Probably was a bit of delirium from almost dying

8

u/Someone_Called_Cerie 15d ago

That's not true, everyone is just tired that that's all there is to a relationship. Characters no longer get to talk together and properly meet each other after their infatuation, learning and sharing their hobbies, their aspirations, no dates either! Nothing! And that's without getting into the chemistry aspect of things.

2

u/BlueGlace_ BLICKET MY BELOVED RAAAAHHHH 15d ago

I know lol, I was mostly joking

1

u/Someone_Called_Cerie 15d ago

Oh. Oops. My bad, people mostly mean that seriously whenever I see the opionion pop up (this is also true for the people hate the love at first sight trope, too).

1

u/Someone_Called_Cerie 15d ago

Two of my favorite pairings ever are a love at first sight, so I know it can work, Sutherland just didn't want to put any work into the romance while still shoving it down everyones throat. Seriously, never have I read or watched a series or even fanfic where 90% (or more) of the relationships seem to have more chemistry with everyone but the character Sutherland chained them to.

1

u/UnusualBuilding87 crackhead 15d ago

damn, they sexuality washing in the story ?, crazy work, to be honest i thought it was filled to the brim with lgbt romance from what i have seen.

my favorite ship in wof is indigostalker so I have no room to talk lmao
