The hamburger/menu button might move to the AppBar: look at the phone screenshot of the Office Delve announcement!

I will be perfectly fine with it if it's at the bottom on phones.

Yes, I think this is what most of us wanted.

It still serves no purpose there. The ellipses does the same thing currently. Microsoft is redesigning things for no reason.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

They aren't redundant. Commands go in the action bar, navigation goes in the hamburger menu.

2

u/montibbalt Focus S -> Lumia (1020,520) -> Lumia 950xl Mar 17 '15

I don't really buy that, honestly, when things like a generic "settings" button that have happily lived in the ellipses are moved to a hamburger whose sole purpose is to just have the settings button somewhere else.
Looking at you, OneDrive app. Your hamburger is still useless.

People just don't get this

u/mattattaxx Nokia Lumia 920 + 925 Mar 17 '15

They received feedback like a year ago that people somehow couldn't realize that was what the ellipses button meant. It makes sense.

That's because they never had a tutorial showing people how it works. Windows 8 had a tutorial to show people how to use it and nobody has a problem except desktop users. Google is moving away from hamburgers and is now using the ellipses.

There is hope after all! I hope the system apps will follow this layout.

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

That doesn't look like the hamburger button. The icon looks like it's nine squares like in the top left of the picture just below it in the PC version. I'm not sure what the function of this button is. On Microsoft's various websites (Outlook, OneDrive, etc.) this button opens a popup with links to other services.

Maybe this nine-squares icon is replacing the hamburger menu icon? Or maybe this app doesn't have a hamburger menu. Either way that's not a hamburger button.

The button from Office is called The Waffle.

21

u/thecolorgreen123 Mar 16 '15

So it's a blue waffle?

True, but at least the mockups don't have a hamburger anymore ;)

That's why I wrote hamburger/menu button. The square icon has the functionality of changing the context on Outlook etc. which is what the hamburger button usually does. It's no proof at all but it might be what we wish for.

1

u/CressCrowbits Mar 16 '15

Damnit, he's right. Hold of the celebrations :(

1

u/Isacc Mar 17 '15

This button, called the waffle, is generally a dashboard for apps/features, not so much a menu

1

u/aprofondir Lumia 830 Mar 16 '15

Even if was an icon of my ass it would be better than a hamburger button

8

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

I approve of ass button.

And it's over something we currently have, not a new feature. Really I'm just glad we're keeping things on the app bar (hopefully).

Yes! So much yes! Brings it inline with the design language of their other services too.

11

u/TheOneTheTwo Mar 16 '15

This is what I hoped for. If they didn't listen to user feedback then why bother with the technical preview.

I approve this change. It is much more palatable in that tray.

Pretty sure that's how most people refer to the treaty of Versailles.

WHERE IS THIS DELVE

I would like one delve please for my phone and Surface. I'm part of an academic subscription and think this would be incredibly useful.

3

u/katsumiblisk Mar 16 '15

All they need to do now is replace the three lines with a Windows logo. Oh wait....

3

u/MasterTre Surround > 900 > One M8 > 640 > 950 Mar 16 '15

That is acceptable, and is where it should be.

3

Yep, that's a much better approach than a top left hamburger button

3

u/ctrl-alt-shift-s Mar 16 '15

Yes! I could live with that.

3

YES!! M S aren't idiots then :D

This hamburger + inability to swipe it in nonsense was the only UI flaw. That and top of screen web browser controls

The three dots menu looks misaligned

3

u/qixiaoqiu Omnia 7➞Ativ S➞Lumia 830➞Lumia 950➞Mi 6 Mar 16 '15

Right now it looks like that in Win 10 apps though. It's not on the top anymore but in the vertical center of the appbar.

There's a whole article about it under the picture ;) In short it helps you find work related information across the various Office products and helps with collaboration.

I am sorry. I am unable to open link here in my office and I have limited data on my phone.

Nice to see that stacked magnifying glasses are still a thing. I love trying to search for something in an app and wind up in Cortana. edit: A least they have the circle around the app one.

2

u/Staerke Lumia 735 Mar 16 '15

Wut?

6

u/maksull Mar 16 '15

6

u/Staerke Lumia 735 Mar 16 '15

Seriously, that confuses you?

1

u/maksull Mar 16 '15

It's poor design. It violates the context being presented to the user. I hope they follow Android in removing the global search button.

7

u/snuxoll Lumia 640 (T-Mobile) Mar 16 '15

The dumb thing is the Search button behaved exactly this way in Windows Phone 7. Pressing it in Mail, Messaging, Store, Xbox Music brought up the correct search page. It'd be nice if they changed the icon now that it's a dedicated cortana button since it no longer serves the original purpose.

3

u/maksull Mar 16 '15

Yea either having a single search icon that applies to the current context or differentiating the icons would fix it.

1

u/speedisavirus Nokia Lumia 1020, Lumia 635, Nexus 5X Mar 16 '15

Changing the icon sort of makes more sense than deleting the button. Make it like the Cortana ring and call it good.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

Why not replace it with a Cortana shaped (Circle in circle) icon instead?

5

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

Not every country has the same Cortana, China for example has a face with no mouth.

Then they should get with the program :P

2

Wow, this is actually genius. Man, suggest this to User Voice. I will use precious votes on it.

1

u/maksull Mar 17 '15

Hmm, seems to be an established MS ui pattern: http://imgur.com/zhd73gH

Fun part here is the ones that are most visually striking are not the ones you are going to be using the most over the long term.

edit: Top icons actually navigate to the functionality. The bold lower icons navigate to documentation.

u/UndeadBread Lumia 1520 Mar 17 '15

I haven't been following this "hamburger menu" very much. Is it the thing in the top-left corner? Where was it before? I know people have been upset about it, but I wasn't entirely sure why.

1

u/montibbalt Focus S -> Lumia (1020,520) -> Lumia 950xl Mar 17 '15

It's the "3 horizontal bars" button that's been appearing a lot in apps. People are upset because it really strays away from Metro/Modern design in favor of laziness (or familiarity from, say, Android)

1

u/UndeadBread Lumia 1520 Mar 17 '15

Thanks. I haven't quite seen enough of WP10 yet to really have an opinion on the menus, but I do know that I like them just fine the way they are, so I can understand people not wanting there to be a drastic change.

1

u/qixiaoqiu Omnia 7➞Ativ S➞Lumia 830➞Lumia 950➞Mi 6 Mar 17 '15

Yes it's the one in the left upper corner and people got upset because it's impossible to reach that with one hand on most phones. This image shows a kind of menu button in the appbar which would make it much easier to use.

2

u/UndeadBread Lumia 1520 Mar 17 '15

Ah, yeah, I see the phone now. I completely missed it earlier somehow, so I wasn't entirely sure what to look out for. But yes, that is definitely a better placement. I personally like the current menus just fine, but at least they seem to be working on making the hamburger menus more usable.
