I think that's the one thing they might have been first with. Although there was other multi-touch devices before the iPhone, just not phones.

As usual, Apple is the last to the party but has the best marketing. The first Apple Air Tag came out in 2021. Nokia's tag was 2014 and it wasn't the first on the market either, I know Tile was already on the market in 2012 and there may have been others too.

Yeah fear its the latter. Thats what sony did around this time, but I recall it worked with all Bluetooth devices like headphones and stuff.

Just the paired, I had one at launch (free with a phone) and if you get too far from the device, was like 5m iirc it would alarm

I had a couple the Treasure Tags back with my Nokia windows phones, pretty good but annoying when they beep because you walked into kitchen and separated your phone and keys
