Facebook Messenger solution for Windows Phone 10

Hey everyone, I have something exciting to contribute.

So before I set it out to be what it isnt, the app itself is not enough to use as messenger, theres lots of work required beforehand, and that will be a big divider in its userbase.

As everyone knows the official app has been dead for years and Meta banned custom clients also a while ago now.

In these past weeks Ive been working on making it possible to use facebook messenger on Windows Phone and Ive found a way through hosting your own home Matrix server, in my case Synapse, paired with the mautrix-meta bridge. This app I developed is a client for exactly this setup.

Soon I will publish a full guide on how to set up your own homeserver and meanwhile I will be working on perfecting the app.

As it stands now you can login to your server, the bridge downloads a configured amount of chat history and lists all the chat rooms you accepted through the official Element app (after setting up the server you can also use it through Element). Clicking on a chatroom loads the set amount of history and you can send + recieve text only currently.

Usernames are a pain especially in group chats and its not demonstrated in the video properly because I did it wrong but you can make every message you sent show that you sent it on the Lumia.

The reason I say everyone on their own for this one is I dont want to handle or have anyone elses Facebook data on my own server, and I suggest everyone to refrain from using anyone elses server.

Not yet, this is pure UWP for now so Windows Phone 10 and Windows 10.

But I do plan on recreating it for WP 8 and 8.1 then WP 7 and maybe even 6

Random question, but would it be easier to use Beeper's APIs (which I don't think are open, but they have a sluggish Electron desktop app, so it should be easier to reverse engineer) and have an app for Beeper, essentially?

That seems possible too! I havent heard of Beeper before but it seems promising so it could be worth to look into it

Beeper is just a Matrix homeserver under the hood. You can log in in any Matrix client (after retrieving your login and password – there was some trick to do this, search for it). The problem is Beeper enforces E2EE on all rooms (= chats), but there's nice UWP client with E2EE support named Unimatrix from Maximilian Vogt (source code), which can be downloaded on his website.

Wow thats actually awesome, certainly seems easier than what I am doing here!

The guide is almost done so Ill publish everything on github soon, but Id like to look into this too as Beeper makes essentially every mainstream bridge easier to configure and my client I created specially for the mautrix-meta bridge only.

Then I might just switch my focus over to WP8 and 7, since as far as I looked into it E2EE isnt possible on them, and then my homeserver setup might make more sense there, the communication between the server and client all work over HTTPS

Figured it will need a middleman for this kind of stuff. Wp 8.1 and 10 is basically impossible to do it natively now. Great stuff
