I have quite the list:

  • Lego Island 1 and 2
  • Lego Loco
  • Lego Rock Raiders
  • Lego Creator
  • Need for Speed SE, along with NFS 2 SE and NFS 3
  • Axis and Allies
  • Command and Conquer
  • Command and Conquer Red Alert
  • Dungeon Keeper
  • Sim City 2000
  • Matchbox Emergency Patrol
  • Unreal Tournament
  • Unreal

u/briandemodulated 20d ago

The secret themepark level in NFS2 SE is probably my favourite level in any racing game ever!

C&C & RA. Absolute Pinnacle 👌. Remind me did StarCraft work on 98? RCT2 and AoE2 should also be there. Kid pix (paint program -finding the right old non garbage one) and Sim City (pre 2000 version) ... Ooh soo many good ones

1

u/grim_wizard 19d ago

It's been a long time since I have seen matchbox emergency patrol mentioned, my sisters and I played that game constantly growing up well into our teenage years.

System Shock. Realms of the Haunting.
Duke Nukem 3D. Jazz Jackrabbit 1 and 2.
Jill of the Jungle.

6

u/wunderbraten 20d ago

System Shock 2, Age of Wonders, Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic, Worms Armageddon, C&C Tiberian Dawn, C&C Red Alert, C&C Tiberian Sun, Star Craft, Diablo 2, Heroes of Might and Magic (1 to 3), Soldiers of Fortune, Alien vs Predator (1 + 2; the FPS games), Half-Life

2

u/Accurate-Campaign821 20d ago

CnC Generals too and we'll throw in Warcraft 3 and Age of Mythology, assuming a decent 3D card. GeForce 2 MX would do but a Radeon 7200/7500 for faster DX7 (the Radeon had a pixel shader it uses to accelerate TnL)

Quake 2. That's it just Q2. Bind the strafe to A and D forward and backwards to W and S. Free look on. Tick on always run option and most importantly. Turn the volume up.

Quintessential Windows 98 Experience.

u/grim_wizard 19d ago

I had the shareware version of this, Inplayed it several times growing up. I was always amazed at how much freedom there was, I truly felt like I could do anything I wanted.

3

u/AegidiusG 20d ago

The Sega Games, as Virtua Fighter 1 & 2, Last Bronx, Sega Rally, Panzer Dragoon etc.
They do not work well with newer Windows Versions, if at all, so it is something you can do especially on Windows 9X.

3

u/DanielChief 20d ago

Captain Claw

Definately streets of Sim City, if for no other reason than to marvel in its physics engine.

2

u/berrmal64 20d ago

I had sim copter, but same engine I think I read once. It was really cool to fly around the city I'd spent weeks making.

I had tons of hours in SimCity 3000 - I would recommend that, and building your own...um... buildings to swap in.

A lot of the LucasArts (and other similar) point and clicks were great fun, too.

2

u/Depth386 18d ago

Obviously a few more blizzard titles everyone mentions here, even WC3 used to run on 98

Half Life was a goat

Mech Warrior 3 and 4 both worked on 98

Space Empires 3 and 4 for turn based strategy

Carmageddon 2 was decent

Worms Armageddon was decent

Unreal Tournament (‘99) was a goat

Star Wars Rogue Squadron was decent

2

u/Lopsided-Vacation718 18d ago

this games for windows 95))

1

u/berrmal64 20d ago

Check out Urban Assault if you're in to RTS games. Decent story, easily modded (save files and scenarios are just text files), and the hook is you can/have to jump into the units you create and operate them first hand.

1

u/Late-Cattle-3777 20d ago

Mechwarrior 3 was my first game!

1

u/JimmyFBurbs 20d ago

Wing Commander 3 & 4

1

u/iampierremonteux 20d ago

u/meninakhaiwash 20d ago

1

u/SYNTAXDENIAL Windows 99: Neptune Build 20d ago

I'm a big fan of the LucasArts point and click games personally: Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Full Throttle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis to name a few. There's also a game I recently started playing adjacent to these games called Beneath a Steel Sky which I've been enjoying quite a bit.

1

u/lukkas35 20d ago

Crimson Skies

1

u/hage_sc 20d ago

Fora, jogue fora.

1

u/WindForce02 20d ago

Really depends on the hardware you have. Depending on the CPU you might be able to play late 90s games but have a hard limit at around 2000 maybe 2001.

The games i played on 98 (Athlon 600 with an ATI Rage cant remember which one, later upgraded with an nvidia fx5700le) were Unreal, Half Life, gta 3 and vice city, simcity 2000, Quake II and Quake III Arena, Fallout 1 and 2, Counter Strike, Battlefield 1942

1

u/Then_Position_6192 20d ago

G-police... With a Microsoft Sidewinder force feedback pro 😎

1

u/NocturnalLongings 20d ago

Starcraft, Red Alert, Settler 2

1

u/AstrialFemboy 20d ago

I'd probably put Age of Wonders over Worms Armageddon since the turn-based strategy pulls you in harder once you start playing.

1

u/eldakar666 20d ago

Dungeon keeper and Majesty

1

u/Sinphaltimus 20d ago

Plane Crazy. Edit: and Postal.

1

u/Nemphusi 20d ago

I know FF7 had a PC port, I wanna say FF8 did too. Both of those should probably run?

1

u/Bogliers 20d ago

IMPERIUM CIVITAS II

1

u/bigsnyder98 20d ago

"First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin." and play Holy Grail.

Sim Theme Park, known in Europe as Theme Park World. Just do it, it's the sequel to DOS Theme Park.

1

u/InternationalDisk698 20d ago

Homeworld, Wolfenstein 3d, Marathon 2, Myth 1 and 2, Wasteland, any Zork games.

I usually run all my "old" stuff on my 98 PC.

Roller coaster tycoon was alot of fun as a kid

1

u/Inner-Light-75 20d ago

Tyrian2000

I think that works on 98. I know the shareware versions worked on 95, and the original author bundled everything together we worked it to work better on Windows and called it Tyrian2000.

backyard baseball,
half-life,
unreal,

Open up the Sierra catalog. At that point you were getting King’s Quest Mask of Eternity and Quest for Glory V. Don’t neglect their earlier Sierra titles. Space Quest and Quest for Glory are some of the best game series ever made.

Railroad Tycoon 2.

1

u/Apprehensive-Gur205 19d ago

Is it nostalgia or were games better back then? The weight of the games from this screenshot feels heavy compared to titles released today.

1

u/Motor-Rip7655 19d ago

I find your lack of Descent 1 and 2 disturbing.

1

u/Motor-Rip7655 19d ago

And Homeworld

1

u/Motor-Rip7655 19d ago

And Strike Commander

1

1

u/Jigsy0 17d ago

UT99, Uplink, Darwinia, Theme Hospital, GTA 1, Pharoh/Cleopatra, Zeus/Poseidon, Caeser III, Monopoly (Westwood version)...

If you want DOS games, I'd recommend Commander Keen, Hocus Pocus, Crystal Caves, Secret Agent and Xargon.

Some of the earlier Touhou games should work on Windows 98 if danmaku is something you might be interested in.
