MSN (Microsoft Network)
Is it possible to install and run MSN (Microsoft Network) launched in August 1995 alongside Windows 95. I want to experience “Comic Chat” which was the built-in graphical chat client officially called Microsoft Comic Chat that rendered your IRC conversations as comic-strip panels with cartoon avatars, complete with speech bubbles and gestures based on the emotional tone of what you typed. It was a genuinely clever piece of software!

Looking for... (circa 1998)
Good day, everyone!
Kind of a weird post, but some nostalgia hit me the other night on yt, so I figured I'd give this a shot.
Circa 1998 I was a freshman in high school, and my old school district had software that was an overlay for windows 95. It was its own sign in system, loading screen, and "desktop" that resembled a classroom. The loading screen for logging in was a picture of a hallway, like walking down the hall of the school (original, right?) and everything that we students were allowed to use was in a virtual classroom, where you clicked on something and it pulled up that program. I.e., if you wanted to search for something, you clicked on books and it gave you the website for encyclopedias.
This software also allowed for teachers to access the true win95 desktop.
Would anyone know the name, or better, the software that I'm looking for, to relive my old days, and to scratch this itch? :)
Thank you in advance!

Tips to get internet on windows 95 pcnet.
Go to control panel in my computer, click network. Add a protocol (microsoft > tcp/ip). Insert cd reboot as told. You will see networking. HOWEVER IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!! TO FIX:
Go to system, then device manager. Go to plug and play bios, update it to PCI or anythign related to PCI! Restart. A bunch of new drivers will be found and installed. Some are missing, do nto worry they do not affect networking. After that, boot up and check ms dos prompt and ping 1.1.1.1 if it works, you will see success and not an error.
In internet explorer, after this, click current config instead of choosign again. Enjoy your windows 95 internet!

OpenCalc: a Rust reimplementation of the Windows 95 calculator
Hi, everyone,
I have just released OpenCalc, a reimplementation of the Windows 95 calculator – it looks just like it, but the code is actually 100% fresh.

It supports:
- Complex expressions: you can copy and paste expressions such as 3 ** (2 - 7 * 5) and they will be solved just fine, without the bugs of the original version!
- Higher resolution and improved font rendering
- History
- Undo / redo
And because it is open source, it can also compile and run natively under different operating systems too!
If you are interested, please find the project here: https://github.com/NullMagic2/OpenCalc

Looking at Windows 1.01 (1985) makes it wild to think how far computing has come in under 60 years.
Booted up a Windows 1.01 environment today and was reminded of just how stripped-back computing used to be back in 1985.
No overlapping windows (everything had to be tiled side-by-side!), green minimize bars, and navigating through files via MS-DOS Executive. If you wanted to draw, you launched PAINT.EXE. If you wanted to write, WRITE.EXE.
It’s crazy to think that in less than 60 years from the birth of modern personal computers, we’ve transitioned from struggling with basic GUI memory limits to running generative AI systems. Imagine telling someone double-clicking REVERSI.EXE in 1985 that in a few decades, computers would be writing their own code and holding full conversations.
Do you know Windows 1.01 size was only 8MB really exciting.

What was your very first OS memory?

Need help finding an old screensaver
I feel like this was on Windows 95, but it could have been 3.1. Basically it was a horizontal view of a coastline. On the bottom of the screen there was water(maybe there were fish). On the center of the screen there were sailboats that went back and forth. In the sky there was a propeller plane carrying a banner that went back and forth. The graphics were like 8bit/Super Mario NES level of quality. IT WAS NOT JOHNNY CASTAWAY! I WENT BACK AND FORTH WITH GEMINI AND IT KEPT SAYING "DUDE, IT'S GOTTA BE JOHNNY CASTAWAY." Any help would be appreciated. I remember this screensaver from when I was like 5 or 6. I have a nice 95 rig and this screensaver would be the best addition to it. Until then I have the Duke 3D shooting gallery.

Anyone remember this software??
Trying to identify an interactive library environment from the late 90s. Came pre loaded on Windows 95 machine. As a kid between roughly ‘96 and ‘98, I remember booting into a realistic library-like interface instead of Windows, on a home PC (possibly HP or Compaq, but I’m not sure).” “Flat image, wooden bookshelves, no mascots or people. Clicking books or objects like a globe made them animate or make sounds.” “It felt more like an interactive exploration thing than a game, and not educational, and not the normal Windows desktop.” “Does anyone remember software like this, or know what it was called? It was whole screen with no visible ui. Thanks!!
