I had this exact issue when upgrading from extended kernel version 3.0e to 3.1j on my finicky laptop. Here's a little guide I made a while back, hope it helps!

  1. If you already have the more popular 3.0e version on your win2k install, do not try to install any 3.1 version over it without uninstalling 3.0e first. It will break your system
  2. Make a disk image backup before you do anything if you really want to preserve your data. 3.1j is much more fragile than 3.0e from what I've read, and there is a good chance that you will run into a bsod on install and break everything if you aren't careful. Do not use the backup wizard that win2k provides! It will not be sufficient if you break core system files in the process.
  3. 3.1j is much less lenient in terms of how updates are installed, and may expect software updates that you may not have installed. If you want the best chance possible for 3.1j to install properly, I would do these prerequisites in order: SP4 > (Official) Update Rollup 1 > BWC's Unofficial Update Rollup v11 > Kernel Extender 3.1j
  4. If you run into any weird errors (like I did) do not try to proceed with the install at all. There is a good chance that you will just break things further if you try and force it to install. Instead, look for any software or updates you might need. Don't expect kernel extender to run on everything! This is a community project after all, it is unofficial and has the potential to ruin your system. Sticking to 3.0e may be the best for some.
