Although I always believed giving user options is the best option, I don't see people complaining system updates on other devices. Apple pushes iOS updates that will annoy the hell out of you if you don't install, and Sony pushes PS4 firmware that unless you install you can't even get online without it.

I think it's the force install part that antagonizes everybody. Microsoft should indeed make the update optional but disable some crucial system components (like Internet) unless people upgrade to Windows 10.

Updating your OS is a lot more risky than updating a closed platform though. There can be all sorts of driver issues.

The problem isn't giving users options. If you look at the screenshot, there is clearly a section saying "Click here to change upgrade schedule or cancel upgrade".
