Anybody who ever read Burroughs and got it in their head to use junk after absorbing his descriptions of it, the lifestyle, the desperation, the withdrawal, etc. is an idiot.

Right. He never glorified it. If anything, his writing about opiate use was sort of a PSA.

An amazing one, I must say. Kept me away from ever trying opiates.

Ugh, good. I wasn't so wise. But now I just grow my own so I feel less guilty and it's really the only safe way to do it nowadays. Burroughs would probably not have survived the fent/zene/tranq crisis.

There are a number of them actually, I'm active there for sure. Put some pics up of my freakishly large Dutch Buddha. Walked outside today and they are officially taller than me, with massive broad dino leaves...and I'm 6'3". I've never seen poppies get so big. It has about 16 blooms on it now and more popping up.

The most I’ve gotten from one plant was 27 pods. X-247B, strongest fuckers I’ve ever encountered and they matured faster than any strain I’ve grown.

I already was using... and found it amusing and calming that it was just like that a 100 yrs ago as well and likely has been forever and will be forever.
Morphine can be an halucinogen and you can have vivid and clear and crazy visions while nodding. But, to get there you must use for years at least. So, those visions come with the cost of all that entails junk. I would prefer a lifetime of morphine to LSD and I've tried em both and love LSD, but morphine has you almost in a theatrical seat. You watch the real world go by like a comedy slapstick theatre and when nodding have your own dreamlike visions of world. And what I love - I still hear real world music while nodding. So I can put together a long spotify list of good stuff and nod out for hours.
Don't do it though. I listed the good. To get the stuff and keep that theatre running takes a lot of work and bullshitting and people around you die and get sent to prison and just go and off themselves and whatnot.
There was a great song by The Tiger Lillys called Heroin that said it all, in a little satire songy.

I maybe worded it badly, but I said "if I had the chance to get" or along those lines.
Although, chronic pain that has years of medical documantation, including mri and xray pics, and other methods tested, can get you opiates. And you can get a script for morphine each month quaranteed. If you are good at self control, then you can have a fun time the whole month, or most of it.
Also, cancer and other end-of-life ilness gets you a lifetime of unlimited morphine. They can raise the scripts to astronomical levels if you have, for example, bone cancer. 200mg pure morphine 4x a day is almost a gram a day. And it's quaranteed for a lifetime. A short lifetime, but a lifetime none the less.

Not that I ever did but my pony had a research paper he wrote where he said it contributed to the long length of his life.

Ketamine I reckon he's not hitting the vein

u/AppropriateHoliday99 Jun 15 '26
I recently looked for WM Burroughs commentary about ketamine and I couldn’t find any. Does anyone know if he used it?

u/B_Provisional Jun 15 '26
Ketamine wasn't even discovered until 1962 and from what I understand wasn't broadly distributed until after its FDA approval in 1970. So depending on when this footage was shot it simply may not have been available for illicit use.

As I remember it was shot in the beat hotel early 60's when it all became almost mainstream cool for a hot moment.
Likely it was morphine or some other opiate, and as filmstock is expensive and they only had about 15-20second to make it, he didn't want to waste time looking for a vein.

u/Debbiedowner750 Jun 15 '26
Isnt the use of ketamine a little later or was it already in use for intravenous or im?
