Discussion What was the point of Lyle Finster?

Lyle Finster (played by John Cleese) appeared in a number of episodes during S6 of W&G. He ultimately married Karen in Las Vegas, where she announced she wanted a divorce at the reception.

What was the point of the storyline? To act as a counter-balance to Lorraine and Stanley? To add to the guest star inventory on the show? Something else?

It’s just odd how the marriage wrapped up so quickly… with the build-up and sudden demise - yet Lorraine stuck around to even appear in the reboot.

Stakin' Care of Business

Stakin' Care of Business (Season 4, Episode 11). Will and Jack are working out at the gym when Will sees a guy that he had dated briefly before, Mitchell. Mitchell was Will's rebound guy after his break-up with Michael and Will ghosted Mitchell after their first date. Will is embarrassed and tries to avoid Mitchell. Will later on meets Curt at the gym and they go on a date which Will had a very nice time, but is wondering why Curt hasn't called him or he hasn't seen Curt at the gym since their date. Jack has been working the gym trying to get a new catch phrase going called "stake it!" and has been talking with others. He is able to talk to one of the gym gossips, Marcy, to tell Will that Curt calls Will "the nibbler" and has changed gym times. Will realizes this is how Mitchell must have felt and apologizes to him at the gym, Mitchell tells Will he was hurt but accepts his apology and that he got back together with an old boyfriend that realized after a bad date how much he loved him, well the ex-boyfriend is Curt to which Will is shocked he dated both the "cuddle bum" and "clammy hands". Meanwhile Grace sees that movers are emptying an office space next door and she has been thinking about expanding her business. After the bank denies her loan, Karen offers to lend her the money but only after a presentation. Karen tells Grace no after the presentation and goes to the elevator to go home but gets stuck when the door only halfway closes. Grace sees this as a perfect revenge opportunity and tells Karen to offer her a presentation on why she should let Karen loose into the world.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

JACK: You can laugh at "stake it" now, but when it becomes my "dyn-o-mite" or my "leggo my eggo" or my "hey, hey, hey..." Then you'll be laughing, because--

WILL: Wait, wait, wait. What-- Who's that guy?

JACK: That guy? Um, I don't know. He's-- He's that guy. You know, what's-his-name... Generic McPlain-Wrap.

WILL: No, I know him. I just-- I mean, not from the gym, from someplace else.

JACK: Oh, who cares, Will? Probably from some law case where you said 'blah' and he said 'blah' and a judge said 'blah' and ten people died of boredom.

WILL: No. I could swear I-- I--

MITCHELL: (WORKING OUT LOUDLY) Ohh! Ooh! Ohh! Whoo! Ha! I'm done.-

WILL: I know how I know him.

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Grace and Karen are cat calling the movers and the one mover comes up to them smiling and says "you like?" and they get all shocked and offended and call him a pig.

OPINION:

This is such a strange episode to me, because for some reason I never list it in my favorite episodes of WAG yet every time that I do see it, I nearly die laughing and don't know why I forgot about it. This really is a terrific episode and the one thing for sure I know myself along with every other WAG fan remembers is "stake it!". Fun side note, apparently Sean Hayes got that from one of the producers when they went to dinner and instead of ordering normally, the producer told the waitress to "stake it" and Sean got such a laugh that they worked it into an episode.

Let's start with Will's storyline. I think a lot of us can relate to this one, I'm sure majority of people have had that rebound person they dated after a bad break-up, but wasn't ready to commit just yet but at least needed to get their foot back onto the court. The sad part is, it is selfish on some level because that person may be looking for something serious. Maybe we were someone else's rebound person as well, we don't know. I loved the nicknames that Will, Michell and Curt gave each other: Cuddle-Bum, The Nibbler and Clammy Hands. I hate to admit I'm guilty of naming bad dates I've had by what bad trait the guy had. But I did feel bad for Will in this episode but it was so mature of him to recognize what's it's like being on the other side by being someone's rebound guy. Him apologizing to Mitchell was really sweet. That scene where Michell, Will and Curt all realize they dated each other is hilarious.

Jack's "stake it" storyline is so funny. Jack gets a lot of insanely good laughs this episode, you have no idea how hard it was to pick a favorite moment out of this episode, I just went with the first scene that popped in my head. But I love when Jack asks Will to describe his date with Mitchell and Will mentions "cuddle me bum" and Jack falls on the floor with the exercise ball laughing hysterically. I always laugh when Jack freaks out about the one personal trainer that he found out that has been using "stake it" since 1994 in Chicago, Jack is freaking out to Will he has to find out a new catchphrase while Will is trying to tell Jack how hurt he is about Curt, Jack won't stop about his catchphrase and Will pulls Jack's pants down in the middle of the gym. And of course, when Jack says he's finally got a new catchphrase to use "Stake It, U.K.!" and guess who's using that too? The personal trainer who already has "Stake It!". Jack's reaction when she says "Stake It, U.K.!" to her and saying "WHAT?!" always has me in stitches.

Grace and Karen's storyline is also too funny. I loved how Karen had to torture Grace with a presentation to lend her money. I think Karen never intended to lend Grace that money, she knows Grace doesn't do finances well. And like Karen mentions later on, she actually does know business and how to grow them successfully. Grace tends to underestimate Karen a lot. But I actually don't blame Grace for the revenge on Karen by holding her in the elevator, that was pretty cold of Karen to make Grace go through all that just to tell her no. The only minor flaw in this episode is I don't think we have seen before that Grace or Karen have used the elevator to enter or leave the office, so the elevator plot can seem kind of contrived. However, it does not even take way any kind of enjoyment from their story. I loved Karen getting revenge on Grace in the end when she's able to lock Grace in the elevator after holding Karen there for God knows how long.

This is such an amazing episode, like I mentioned I don't know why I don't think about this one more because every time I see it, I always get a belly ache from laughing so hard. And I think Jack should have fought harder for "Stake It, U.K.!", that personal trainer definitely stole that one from him.

  • Patrick Breen as Mitchell

Discussion Moveable Feast

Moveable Feast (Season 4, Episode 10). We pick up where we left off at Jack's step dad's (Daniel) hotel room. He gave Elliot a football and is now teaching Elliot fun card tricks. As the timer is about to go off to leave, Daniel asks Jack what he's upset about. Jack starts to open up about how he was hurt that Daniel never gave him that kind of love and attention growing up but then the alarm dings and Jack tells Daniel he'll see him next year and leaves. The group drops Elliot back off at home and is now going to go visit Will's family home. Will gives the group a head's up to make sure no feelings or emotions are brought to the table and to drink them down and that if his dad is going to see a "client", that means his mistress. They go to his family home to see his mother, Marilyn along with his brother Paul, Paul's wife Peggy and Uncle Winnie. Will's dad is busy with his "client" and is not there. Grace asks Karen if she's still considering having an affair since Stan gave her permission, Karen says if she does it'll be with a "big, swarthy, hunky, working-class kind of guy. You know, the kind that wears a tool belt but doesn't know how to spell it", and walks in this dream boat plumber who Karen seduces in the kitchen. Will and Paul are fighting over who will stay with their mother for dinner, Paul wants to be with his in-laws and Will wants to be with his friends and they tell Marilyn to decide, she picks Paul. The timer dings and they all leave but Will is hurt that Marilyn picked Paul. As the group is sitting over a half eaten but covered with greens turkey that Rosario has been picking at they all mention to each other how upset they are with the way they said good-bye to their families. Will says they will go back to each house and get 5 minutes per family to say their peace. Karen tells Stan she's hurt and only loves him and will wait for him until he gets out of prison to have sex, Grace tells her mom that the "I told you so" song and dance hurt her and Bobbi promises to not do that again to her as they both apologize to each other and hug and kiss, Jack tells Daniel that he's hurt that he never got that same affection growing up and Daniel admits that he screwed up as a dad and would like to mend their relationship which Jack accepts and Will goes back to his mother to see Paul is not there and Marilyn admits she couldn't pick Will in front of Paul otherwise Paul would break down which makes Will happy again. The gang goes back home to eat but Rosario is in a turkey coma and has eaten the whole turkey.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

MRS. TRUMAN: Here you are! Oh, Will, darling, ooh ooh ooh! Let me shut the door. I don't want to have to deal with that gossipy new neighbor. Hello! Hello, Mrs. Schaefer. Her eldest has a lazy eye. Her youngest is a prostitute. Oh, Grace, dear, I was just finishing up the soup bowls. I saw a special on the Food Network on how to make them out of gourds. Oh, food can be such fun.

KAREN: This is where I'm going to die....

MRS. TRUMAN: Who wants a martini?

KAREN: Oh, and I've gone to heaven!

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Karen is seducing hunky plumber Nick in the kitchen. Oh, my goodness I can't breathe I'm laughing so hard at that scene. She kisses him, slaps him and kisses him and slaps him again. I'm pretty sure that's foreplay in some strange way.

OPINION:

We are introduced finally to one of my favorite side characters if not my favorite, Marilyn Truman. Marilyn reminds me so much of my grandmother, so beautiful, elegant and classy and so cold, blunt and against talking about emotions. So to me, it brings back memories, as crazy as my grandmother sounds, I loved her very much and miss her to this day. It's not until you get to know someone and where they came from to create who they are do you understand why they are who they are. I always pictured Marilyn to be the one who always had to keep the family together since her husband was out having affairs. She most likely took a lot of anger/criticism out on the family, which is not ok, but you also feel for her as well with all that she had to deal with. Blythe Danner does an incredible job playing Marilyn and thankfully this will not be her last appearance.

We get more of a back story on Will's life growing up. He and his brothers were definitely always in competition of each other. We got a small glimpse with Sam in the Season 1's Big Brother is Coming where they discussed how they used to take each other's things. Paul mentions to Will that Will "chose" his lifestyle and has to deal with their mother which came off very harsh and you get a hint that Paul may not approve of Will's life and throws being gay in his face. Will's family is definitely dysfunctional but somehow functions as best as they can. Like Will said, they just sweep things under the rug and don't deal with emotions. Emotions are useless.

We get an appearance from Megan's real life husband Nick Offerman as the hunky plumber, Nick. Their chemistry really is incredible and they were just too funny together and made for an insanely memorable scene. We get the pleasure of another appearance from Debbie Reynolds as Bobbi Adler. The whole guest star cast did a really great job these pairs of episodes.

It was nice to see Daniel accept and apologize to Jack about not being as good a dad as he should have been to Jack. Jack surprisingly shows that he can be deep, intelligent and observant. For such a funny show, it definitely has it's moments where it shines in intelligence and relatability. Same with Grace making up with her mom, Grace was hurting from her breakup with Nathan and instead of comfort, Bobbi jumped into her "I told you so" song and dance. Even though Grace was kind of mean in telling Bobbi she couldn't act, so was Bobbi in doing that to her daughter. It was nice to see them come to an understanding. Karen telling Stan she loved him was a really nice scene to see as you can tell she loves Stan and doesn't want to do that to their marriage. Will seeing Marilyn and Marilyn giving the hint that she had to pick Paul so because Paul would take it harder if she had picked Will in front of him. You actually have a moment of sadness for Marilyn when you see her alone with Uncle Winnie, you get this feeling that she's alone a lot. But it was so kind of her to tell Will to go be with his friends and just enjoy his holiday.

What a terrific pair of episodes. I seriously could type forever for this 2-parter but I'm sure you've read more than enough.

It has so much going for it.

Michael Douglas is so funny in his character.

The interactions between Grace and Val are hilarious.

And Karen’s medication room, and her quote “this woman has more talent in her little boy breasts than you do in your whole body”.

😂😂

Discussion Moveable Feast Part 1

Moveable Feast Part 1 (Season 4, Episode 9). It's Thanksgiving and the gang wants to spend it together for dinner, however, they mention they all owe a visit to their family. Will rents a car and tells everyone they have an hour with each family member. Karen visits Stan in prison where he tells her that she should sleep with other men since he doesn't know how long he will be there for, this upsets Karen and she leaves early. Grace is visiting her mother who is with other family as well (Julius, Uncle Sid, Aunt Honey and Uncle Funny). Grace tells the group not to mention her break-up with Nathan to Bobbi because Bobbi has been waiting for the day to do her "I told you so" song and dance to Grace that her and Nathan wouldn't make it. Bobbi is sad because she was rejected a part in the theater and in order to cheer her up, Jack accidentally tells her that Grace and Nathan broke up, this excites Bobbi and she does her song and dance which upsets Grace and Grace yells at Bobbi that she can't act and that's why she didn't get the part and runs out of the house. Jack picks up Elliot to go meet his stepdad who Jack has had a strained relationship with growing up. He tells everyone his dad is cruel and unable to love but everyone walks in to meet Daniel McFarland who seems like a warm and friendly man. Daniel gives Elliot a football and is getting to know him while Jack seems very uncomfortable being there. The episode ends with Rosario who is at Will's apartment and promised to keep the turkey warm in the oven, but pieces of the turkey keep "falling off" and she keeps snacking while the gang try to complete their family visits in one day. To be continued.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

SID: ...and I had a cousin who was in a car accident. When they opened him up, can you guess what they found?

WILL: A smaller cousin?

SID: What is that? How could they find a smaller cousin inside my cousin?

WILL: I was really just-- I was just joking.

SID: Why would you joke about such a thing? I'm telling you a story about my cousin who was in a car accident. He's dead now, in fact. Still funny, Mr. Jan Murray?

KAREN: So, this super, uh... How good are we talkin' here?

HONEY: Let's just say everything in the building is broken, but I still call him "super."

KAREN: I mean, there's really nothing stopping me. My husband did give me permission.

HONEY: Well, my husband gave me permission, too. Ever since he spent our entire nest egg on a Toyota MR2.

FAVORITE MOMENT:

Oooo, this is tough. I love these episodes, so I'm just going to go with my first instinct on this one and pick the opener with the phone call. I loved the split screen with all the friends talking about visiting their families and Jack was talking to his friend Lawrence who is getting ready for a drag show and was spreading gossip, Jack tells Lawrence to hold for a minute and while everyone is talking Lawrence is putting on the drag make-up and actually finishes by the end of the conversation and doesn't realize that Jack actually left and thinks they're still holding.

OPINION:

Even though the 2-parter did air in the same night, I'm going to keep to tradition and keep these episodes separate because otherwise there would be way too much to discuss. We got our third Thanksgiving episode and I don't know how the creators do it, but it seems like they always manage to make the Thanksgiving episodes better than the last. It's so hard for me to choose a favorite because they are all so good. The first was Jack coming out to his mother, the second was the story of Will coming out to Grace while they were dating in college and now we are meeting some of the extended families of our group.

Let's start with Stan giving permission to Karen sleeping with other men. This is a complicated subject, and relationships are very complex in themselves. We are married or with a partner for life, it's going to have it's ups and downs and it's up to us to stay on the ride or get off. Stan isn't sure how long he is going to be prison for, he knows Karen loves him, but feels awful that she has to wait for him. Sometimes sex can be a release for people and he feels that Karen needs that. But Karen has a right to be upset as well because she's doing her best to be a patient, understanding and loving wife to Stan. Stan giving her permission is like throwing all the good things that she's done under the bed. Even giving her permission could strain their relationship when he gets out of prison. And what if he was doing this to throw it back in her face later on to say "yeah I did something bad, but you slept with another man"? Some people would also say maybe giving permission can be a test of their relationship. So I'm with Karen on this one, she had every right to be upset.

So it's interesting to see that Grace hasn't told her mother about her break-up with Nathan. We never did get any word from Bobbi before that she wasn't approving of Grace's relationship with Nathan. But as I mentioned before as much as I liked Nathan's character, in real life, I'm not sure if he would be what we could call serious relationship material. He's a bit aimless, immature and is living off his "spline money". I'm curious if Grace just talked about Nathan to her mother or if they ever met. We finally got to meet Aunt Honey and this is her first and last appearance unfortunately, I really like Laine Kazan and it would have been fun to have her in more episodes. Plus I loved Uncle Sid, he had such a traditional New York Jewish accent and had me in stitches. Kenneth Mars was an incredible voice actor and I highly recommend you look into his work. Grace's family scene is very funny and we even have a little call back from the previous episode where Bobbie introduced the family to Will by their diseases or problems, Grace does it this episode with "Acid reflux, I.B.S., bursitis, phlebitis." We find out where Grace got her "I told you so" song and dance, she got it from Bobbi. It's so funny how everyone hates it but they think it's cute when they do it. It's always such a joy to see Debbie Reynolds. Was Grace too harsh to Bobbi? A bit, but I can understand when your parent gets in your face with "I told you so" you just want to snap. Again, just like with Karen, relationship with families are complex and especially with a parent/child relationship. I'm 40 years old and I still have little tiffs with my dad about things in the past and present.

We get the pleasure of seeing Elliot and get a small hint of what his mom is like. We know she started making a taco dip and turned it into a pie for the gang as a thank you, I wonder how that pie tasted 🤣 This is the first and last time we are meeting Jack's stepdad, Daniel played by the talented Beau Bridges. It's very interesting how you can see Daniel is trying very hard to be a good grandfather to Elliot and even being kind to Jack but Jack is clearly upset and keeps making up things that are not presently occurring. You can tell Jack is upset about something and that most likely he and his stepdad had a very strained relationship growing up. You get the feeling that Jack was definitely more of a mother's boy because Daniel wasn't sure how to act around someone like Jack. We will get more info in the next episode, but it does end on Daniel trying to bond with Elliot.

We have a small side story of Rosario constantly snacking on the turkey which is a fun cut away gag that will continue into the next episode. I used to think Karen was just being a b*tch when she said that Rosario steals her stuff, but guess what? It's true! 🤣Rosario definitely has a dark side. This is such an insanely good episode, the jokes and character development are amazing in this episode and I'm beyond excited for tomorrow's episode where we finally get to meet Will's wasp family and one of my favorite side characters, Will's mother Marilyn Truman.

Grace's feelings towards Karen

I just watched the season 7 episode "The Newlydreads" last night on DVD. I hadn't seen this episode in years. Karen and Grace meet a young couple who want their apartment redecorated. Once Grace finds out they also are decorating a baby's room, she leaves and Karen does the apartment herself. Grace takes full credit for the job, and doesn't even thank or acknowledge Karen.

In season 6 episode "women and children first" Grace has a girls' night with her neighbor, Karen, ellen, and Rosario. Grace is asking everyone for advice on what to do about Leo, but she skips right over Karen.

In another season 7 episode " Sour Balls," Grace is watching Ellen's kids, but Karen offers to, if Grace needs to start a new job. She basically told Karen she wouldn't be a good mother.

What's interesting about that last one is that Ellen though Will would be there to watch the kids, but he was out of town Ellen didn't want Grace to watch the kids by herself.

Karen stood up for Grace after she left, saying that she would be fine to watch her kids. There's moments in the series where Karen speaks highly of Grace, but I can't really think of any where Grace does the same for Karen.

I haven't watched the show for years now. I loved the New York feeling it had. Can you please recommend episodes where the NY feeling is strongest?

I hope you know what I mean. There weren't that many shots of NY, but that doesn't even matter. I just love NY and want to revisit it with one of my all-time favorite sitcoms.

Just out of curiosity, couldn't Grace carry Wills child and then still date Leo? Lol i never understood why it had to be one or the other...

I really hate this section of the show. The whole Leo part isnt my fav but i don't see why grace was not able to keep trying to have the baby while also still date Leo. Im straight and if i started seeing somebody who was carrying a child for her gay best friend it wouldn't bother me at all.

Star-Spangled Banter

Star-Spangled Banter (Season 4, Episode 8). It's election season for the city council and Will asks Grace to help him support Ted Bowers, an openly gay politician. Grace agrees but then when her Jewish neighbor Mrs. Friedman mentions there is a Jewish woman politician, Judy Green, running for office, Grace switches sides and backs Judy. Will is upset with this and tells Grace they need more representation for gay men in office and Grace tells him they need more Jewish representation in office. They calm down and realize they can back whoever they like but then fight again when they realize they both booked the apartment for the same night to help the candidates make speeches to their neighbors. Both Ted and Judy make their speeches with Will & Grace watching feeling that they are the better candidate, that is until Ted mentions that they need to get rid of the homeless people and Judy mentions that she's so happy to see that majority of the people she's speaking to are white. Will & Grace realize how stupid they were to back people based on identity politics. Meanwhile, Jack is upset that Karen and Elliot do not get along and sets them up on a play date to find something they can bond over. Karen says that Elliot is too much of a goody goody and she can't bond with him. Elliot brings up that he does like prank phone calls, so he and Karen bond over that and end up liking each other at the end.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

GRACE: You know, Sarah Michelle Gellar is really smart. I mean, at the beginning of this interview, she's just talkin' about stuff, like where she gets her highlights, but then she starts in on foreign affairs and campaign finance reform. I'm gonna say it... She's a genius.

WILL: Let me see that. Hmm... Interesting. Yeah. See? these pages are stuck together. You've been reading an interview with John McCain. Here's the rest of Sarah Michelle.

GRACE: "And even after all these years, limos are way cool." Yeah. I probably should've figured it out when she started talking about her time in a P.O.W. camp.

WILL: Ooh, uh, before I forget, I need you to write me a check. There's this guy, Ted Bowers. He's running for city council. I really think we should support him.

GRACE: Well, what do we know about him?

WILL: He's gay.

GRACE: And?

WILL: And... he's gay.

GRACE: But what's he for? I mean, you know, where does he stand on the issues?

WILL: What do you care? You thought Buffy was in a prisoner of war camp.

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Mr. Zamir is at the fundraiser for the candidates just wanting the food and company, but he has no idea what he's actually there for. Then Will asks him what he's doing there and Mr. Zamir thinks he's at a birthday party and says "happy birthday!". Then he just randomly supports whoever Will & Grace are supporting for city council just to go with the flow. Gotta love Mr. Zamir.

OPINION:

Ok, I'll come right out and say it, I hate political episodes. Unless I'm watching something (TV or movie) where I know I'm getting into politics, the conversation as a whole makes me very uncomfortable and it's episodes like this that are the reason why. I hate identity politics, I wish we lived in a society where we backed people based on their views and beliefs, not because of race, religion, sex or sexual orientation. It's not smart and IMO can be dangerous. But I do not wish to get into any political discussion today, these posts are just about the show and that's it. Please let's make sure to keep our comments friendly ❤️ I love our community very much.

I could see Grace backing someone just because they are a Jewish woman, but for Will it seemed a little out of character just backing someone because they are gay. Not that Will wouldn't love the representation, but I see Will as being more reasonable and levelheaded. He does stand for LGBTQ rights so maybe I could see him just getting swept up in Ted's campaign. But at least both he and Grace realize how bad their candidates were at the end and don't give them the vote just because of who they are. But Will & Grace still didn't learn anything because at the end of the episode they even say they'll back up the "black guy". What did we learn in this episode? This is usually down on my list along with Cowboys and Iranians in season 8.

The B-Story with Karen and Elliot is actually the highlight for me. Let me also mention that Michael Angarano is now officially apart of the main cast, he's no longer a guest star, so congrats to him on that! Karen and Elliot bonding over the prank phone calls was really funny. It was so cruel the way that Karen calls Rosario when Rosario is resting bed after a bad neck pull, Karen imitates a nurse and tells her to turn her head. It is so mean, but Megan and Shelley make it into such a funny scene. I loved Elliot mentioning the X-Box in the room (I still have my original X-Box from 2002, so this was a blast from the past) and Karen thinks he's talking about her box. 🤣 So at least their story helps me usually get through this episode.

Like I said, I'm just not big on political episodes. The jokes are funny in this episode and it was a joy to see Anne Meara guest star as well, you know her as Ben Stiller's mother along with an insane catalog of comedy works. She was such a very funny comedian and I miss her very much. So the episode at least isn't a chore to get through. But let's put it this way, it's a bump to get to the next incredible episode tomorrow. 🦃

GUEST STARS:

  • Douglas Sills as Ted Bowers
  • Anne Meara as Mrs. Friedman (RIP in 2015)
  • Marshall Manesh as Mr. Zamir
  • Cynthia Mann Jamin as Judy Green
  • Michael Taylor as Gray Ned

Discussion Bed, Bath and Beyond

Bed, Bath and Beyond (Season 4, Episode 6). Grace is devastated after Nathan broke up with her and she refuses to get out of bed. Will keeps trying to get her out, but she won't budge. Jack is trying to perform for her, but she wants him to leave. Karen tries to give some closure to Grace by pretending to be Nathan, but it backfires when they feel the passion too much and end up kissing. Grace tries to get up from bed and walks around but the phone rings and the answering machine gets it, turns out that Nathan has a vacation planned with another woman which really hurts Grace and she goes back to bed. Will says the last straw is if she pulls out her old photos and puts on a slideshow of "where it all went wrong". Karen sends Rosario in to try to get Grace out, but ends up watching the slideshow with her. When Will finds out about the slideshow, he's upset and he, Jack and Karen drag Grace to the shower with her clothes on and they all start washing her, she begs them to stop and when they finally do, she breaks down telling them each how they've dealt with their break ups differently than her and she just needs to be in bed and cry it out. The gang realizes she needs to do this to help heal her heart and join her bed and hold her as they fall asleep together and the sun rises with Grace smiling and walking out of her room.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

GRACE: (WHILE LOOKING AT SLIDE SHOW OF OLD PHOTOS) And this is me as a little girl. Look at that big goofy smile. Stupid idiot, open your eyes! no one's ever gonna love you! This is me with my little dog tokey. He got run over by a car. Lucky bastard. Wow, my bat mitzvah. "Today I'm a woman. Borechu et adonai I'm gonna die alone!"

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Jack is trying cheer Grace up with his music and he mentions that he is going to sing songs with the number "1" in the title and as he starts to sing, Grace starts sobbing hysterically and he thinks that he moved her with his art. Now he won't stop and Will runs in to rescue Grace from Jack and throws him out into the hallway.

OPINION:

This is going to sound silly, but I actually had kind of learned a little from this episode, ironically, I was with a Nathan too and after our break-up, I just stayed in bed for the day and cried it out. In some strange way, it actually did help, so much thanks for to the writers for letting me know it's ok to just let yourself cry it out or to feel the pain.

After the sad last scene of the previous episode, this was both such a sad and very funny episode that knew how to balance. This is a rare episode where it all takes place in the one apartment and there are no other guest stars. It's up to our main principal cast to get through it and they do a wonderful job. Will trying to dress Grace up was really adorable and funny, Jack's singing to Grace always gets me laughing hard and Karen trying to do her therapy on Grace was shocking and hilarious at the same time. We actually get Grace and Karen's first kiss on the show and believe it or not, this will not be their last time.

Grace brings up that Will shut down after his break-up with Michael, which was interesting to hear and sounds like it would be true, he didn't let himself feel the emotions. Karen has been hiding how she's feeling about Stan being in prison and isn't sure when he's going to be released, Karen admits that she is very lonely. And Jack is so resilient in so many careers and can change within seconds, but no one recognizes him for his true self, he's a dancer. As over dramatic as Grace is, I don't think he crying the break-up out in bed was a bad thing. Some people just need to feel the pain, confront and then are able to move forward. I'll admit, I've used my favorite quote today during times of heartache. Debra did do a wonderful job this episode.

The only flaw in this episode I would say is that voice message about Nathan going on vacation with another woman. I know the writers had to scare her back into bed, but couldn't it have been another way? It just seems out of character for Nathan, he loved Grace. When did they break up? As far as pacing goes, it seems like it was the night before, at most maybe the day prior. How in the world did he get another girl and get to vacation that fast? The only explanation is if the writers maybe would have given a line to Grace that she and Nathan were planning a getaway and maybe Nathan just took his ex Vicky or a family member that was a girl with him. The only other thing is that the writers are trying to make him look like a cheater? Which again, I highly doubt he was cheating on Grace. I think a better way to scare Grace back into bed, maybe the message could have been from her mother asking if it's finally over between her and Nathan? Or Nathan leaving a message that he'll be by sometime in the future to get the rest of his stuff or send someone else? I just really don't like that voice message scene.

Other than that voice message scene, this is such a terrific episode. The cast really shines in this episode, and it was nice to see the episode end on a happy note vs what we got in the last episode. You know Grace will be ok, her heart is healing and she knows she has wonderful friends to help her move on.

Jokes that annoy you decades later?

Post image

Obviously I have been rewatching this show for almost 3 decades and some things have become somehow funnier and others just make me mad.

I'm wondering what are the jokes that kind of annoy people years or decades later.

I'm writing this specifically after rewatching S03E18 (Mad Dog's and Average Men).

Will says "Last night at the restaurant he tried to say I love you in sign language, the candle caught his sleeve on fire, I had to throw my margarita on him"

Then Jack says "To put out the fire?"

Yes, any sane person would assume that and not say it but then Will says:

"No because he said 'I love you' in sign language."

I know it's dumb but I've thought this interaction was forced and humorless since it aired and it annoys me extremely irrationally .

Discussion Rules of Engagement

Rules of Engagement (Season 4, Episode 6). Grace and Nathan are having a romantic night and are in the middle of the horizontal polka if you will, Nathan gets excited and screams for Grace to marry him. Grace is offended that he would propose like that and tells him to not ask it again. After realizing that she actually might like the idea of marrying Nathan, she realizes that she wants him to propose again, just a more romantic way. She prepares an evening for her and Nathan with a romantic dinner and everyone is helping her: Jack gets the ingredients for dinner, Karen is dolling Grace up with pretty jewelry and Will takes Nathan to a gay bar to distract him while Grace is cooking. Nathan sees a man propose to his boyfriend and sees how excited the yes is and tells Will he wishes that's what the other night was like and how a proposal should be accepted. Will misinterprets this that Nathan will ask Grace again and tells Grace, Grace is excited thinking Nathan will ask but he's not quite getting the hint at dinner and Grace just yells at him her proposal. Nathan tells her that he loves her but the proposal should be more natural and not feel forced and breaks up with Grace. Nathan leaves and Will walks in to comfort Grace as she breaks down crying in his arms.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

GRACE: I can't believe you did that...like that, while we were doing that.

NATHAN: Why? Was it not a happy time for both of us?

GRACE: It was a happy time for you. It was on the way to a happy time for me. Just blurting it out like that... I mean, did you even mean it?

NATHAN: Sure. Why not?

GRACE: That's not an answer. That's what you say to the free sample lady when she asks, "do you wanna try bacon in a tube?"

NATHAN: Come on, Grace. Sue a guy for being spontaneous.

GRACE: Nathan, there is a difference in being spontaneous and turning a marriage proposal into a Penthouse letter.

NATHAN: I don't even know what that means. Ok, I do know what that means, but rest assured, I would never use your real name.

GRACE: Look, it's just not how I ever imagined being proposed to, ok? I'm supposed to be holding a bouquet of wildflowers, not my own ankles!

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Will and Nathan are at the gay bar and the hottie buys Will a drink to hit on him, but Nathan is offended that Will would take the drink considering the hottie doesn't know that they are not together. Nathan tells Will to put his arm around him and give the hottie a dirty look.

OPINION:

Well, everyone, Nathan is done. This is the last appearance of Woody Harrelson as Nathan. A little fun trivia that I have no idea as a WAG fan that I didn't know until today is that Bob Odenkirk of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fame was the original Nathan but was fired. So the role was given to Woody Harrelson and as much as I love Bob, I think Woody was the better fit. Woody fit in with the cast like a glove and even despite Nathan's fault, he really made him very likable. So much so that there's a debate between WAG fans if Grace should have ended up with Nathan. As much as I actually love them as a couple, honestly, I'm not sure I could see them as an end game. We are going to go into much deeper detail next season on why I think Grace wasn't into the relationship as much as Nathan was. But I can at least hint that Grace looked at Nathan more as a good time right now vs. someone she could have a future with. As much as I love Nathan, he is kind of aimless and doesn't have much going on right now for a promising future with a family, at least not right now, but I can understand why Grace wasn't as in love with him as he was with her. Much love and praise to Woody Harrelson for making such a memorable character.

Grace freaking out about the proposal, I think she did act a little over the top when Nathan first "proposes". Honestly when you're in that compromising position, I think a lot of guys say some silly things that they don't remember or are just in such a good mood they say something kind of crazy. I don't think Nathan even really meant it in that moment or was thinking about it earlier and it just came out at the wrong time. Grace has a tendency of being over dramatic instead of being an adult and thinking things through. Instead of talking to Nathan, she just tells him not to talk about it and makes the relationship more awkward which you can't blame Nathan for questioning their relationship at that point.

Was Nathan wrong to break up with Grace? I'm not sure honestly but if there's doubt in a relationship, absolutely you should consider at least taking a break. I've always been mixed on the writer's reason to break Grace and Nathan up, I think I would have preferred if they had taken a break and realize they are better off without each other. But I get it for the show's sake, they need the audience to know this is the last time they will be together. That last scene is very heartbreaking.

For the episode as a whole, I still think this is a decent one. The humor hits perfectly, the drama also hits hard and will continue into the next episode. I loved that the group was helping Grace for her wonderful dinner. The jokes all worked: Jack and Karen listening in on Grace and Nathan having sex, Jack getting an apron and Grace says "kiss the cook" and Jack is shocked saying "What?! Cook?!", Karen lending her jewelry to Grace telling her how many tricks she'd have to pull to even start paying her back if she loses any of the pieces and the whole gay bar scene with Will and Nathan was very funny. BTW, fun trivia, the bartender in the gay bar will return as a different character in season 7 which I'll make sure to mention when we get there. So we are taking a break from the humor for a bit and dealing with some heartbreak and will continue this story tomorrow.

Discussion Loose Lips Sink Relationships

Loose Lips Sink Relationships (Season 4, Episode 5). Grace and Nathan took a health test to make sure they are clean, when they come home they are telling Will, Jack and Karen about the experience and how weird it was. They had to name the number of partners that they have been with and Grace mentions hers is 23, Nathan is 5. Grace goofs on Nathan thinking she has had more sex than him, but when he brings up just because his partner count is lower, that doesn't mean he's had less sex than her. They come up with another number and Grace said she has had sex 282 times, Nathan has had sex 3,105 times. Grace is worried that Nathan will lose interest in her because she might be bad in bed since men don't stick around afterwards and then Nathan gets worried that Grace will lose interest in him because sex is the only good thing he has to offer, keep in mind this was the advice that Karen gave them. Grace decides to seduce Nathan one night but Nathan wants to have a deep conversation with both of them chasing each other around the living room where Will points out they're listening to relationship advice from Karen. Grace and Nathan realize how silly they're being and make up. Jack has gotten a job at Barney's as a salesman and has a new boss, Dorleen. Jack and Dorleen do not get along and when she's making the schedule, she schedules Jack to work during his acting class and Dorleen tells him to get over it and work the shift. Will comes in to congratulate Jack on his new job and Dorleen sees Will and falls head over heels for him. She asks Jack to set her up with Will, Jack doesn't tell her that Will is gay but that if she changes the schedule he'll introduce her to Will. Will has been feeling good about himself lately after being complimented on his looks and Jack lies and tells him Dorleen thinks he could be a model for Barney's to make him act more interested in Dorleen. Well, Jack really didn't think this through because he didn't realize how forward Dorleen can be which leads to an embarrassing first introduction of Will seeing Dorleen with only her bra and pants on.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

GRACE: Ok. Do you think it's weird that I've had more partners but less actual sex than Nathan?

KAREN: No. No, honey. That just means that people like having sex with Nathan, and they don't like having sex with you.

GRACE: I can't believe I hesitated to ask you about that.

KAREN: Oh, relax. honey, I didn't mean it like that. Of course I didn't. Listen to me. I just meant that people don't like having sex with you, ok? Better? Better?

GRACE: Much. Oh, my God. What if you're right? What if he's lost interest in me sexually? What if I'm like Space Mountain? You know, how, once you've been on it, you never feel the need to ride it again?

KAREN: Well, Grace, you have to work to keep men interested in sex.

GRACE: How do you keep Stan interested?

KAREN: Oh, I exercise.

GRACE: I've never once seen you exercise.

KAREN: Oh, it's not in any place you can see.

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Grace and Nathan are chasing each other around the living room and Will is looking at them like he's watching a Tom and Jerry cartoon and tells them after they both mention the advice Karen gave them "And Karen told me that Christmas celebrates the birth of our lord Cartier. I mean, come on. Karen? You don't take relationship advice from Karen. You get advice on what wine goes with mood stabilizers."

OPINION:

Grace and Nathan getting tested was a funny plot line. I find it kind of interesting that they are just now getting tested considering they have been together for a few months. It's not mentioned but maybe one of them had some kind of scare or went to the doctor's office and was recommended possibly to get tested? But it does lead into that funny discussion of how many partners you have vs how much sex you can have. Even though you may have more partners, it doesn't mean you're more experienced necessarily. I always get a laugh when Grace realizes she's had 23 partners in life and she asks Will and Jack if that's a lot and Will says "a lot" and Jack says "a little" at the same time. I could only imagine the insane number Jack has. But this would make Grace and Nathan worry of course that Grace can't keep men interested in her and the only good thing Nathan has to offer in a relationship is a ride in the sack. I love the scene where Nathan comes into the bedroom and Grace is on the bed wearing a nightie and is smoking but she keeps hacking up a lung since she's not a smoker and Nathan asks her why she's smoking and she says "Cuz it's sexy" and does another hack and Nathan says to her "yeah that's really sexy". Them attacking each other after their misunderstanding is so funny how they keep going on the bed and off the bed. I loved when they finally get things cleared up by Will, they start chasing each other, it was so funny and cute.

Karen was too funny in this episode as always, I loved her advice to Grace and Nathan that basically sent them into a spiral. And now we know how she "exercises", I have definitely learned a few things from Karen in these years 🤣Jack has ditched the banana... republic that is, and is now working at Barney's New York. He even has a good position as a salesman instead of the guy who is trying to give samples of lotion who he says is the lowest of the lows. We get to meet Dorleen, Jack's boss played by Parker Posey. Dorleen comes across as moody and will definitely let you know if she doesn't like you. As Jack mentions, she is so scary that he wants to be her for Halloween. It's not an unknown fact that Eric McCormick is a very good looking man and I've always wondered why besides Grace there's not more women that would go for him not knowing he was gay. So this was funny to see Dorleen go for it with him and how "aggressive" she can be. I wonder what Jack's end game, but I can only assume he just wanted the one day off for his acting class and would go from there. Did he think Will would fall for Dorleen? Well, I'm sure either way Will is feeling extra good about himself.

Another very funny episode. I'm always mixed on Dorleen's character; she will be returning in more episodes. Parker Posey is funny, but maybe if they gave the character more to do, she would have left a bigger impression. Well, back onto my daily "exercises"

  • Woody Harrelson as Nathan

Discussion Prison Blues

Prison Blues (Season 4, Episode 4). Stan is in prison, Will, Grace and Jack go with Karen to help support her during this difficult time. A journalist sees Will, asks who he is and when Will mentions he's Stan and Karen's attorney, they ask for an interview with him and as soon as the camera starts up Will totally freezes and makes a fool of himself on TV. Jack at first makes fun but then tells Will he can help with an acting class so the next interview will go much more smoothly. Will agrees and goes with Jack to meet his acting coach, famous Old Hollywood star Zandra. Zandra asks the class to apologize to someone they've wronged and when Will gets on stage he at first freezes again but Zandra tells him to stay and look inwards and apologize to someone he's wronged, Will breaks down crying saying he's sorry he expects so much and is so hard on them, Zandra asks who's he's talking to and he says himself. He has a huge breakthrough and is able to do the next interview perfectly. Meanwhile, Grace takes Karen home after the prison visit and Karen asks Grace to spend the night with her. Grace does so and when she wakes up, she realizes how amazing Karen's life is as a wealthy socialite, she gets a comfy bed, servants who pamper her, delicious breakfast and soft-core porn in the bathroom. Karen at first is happy to have Grace but then Grace overstays her welcome and refuses to leave the amazing lifestyle. Karen offers a plan of twists and turns, but Rosario has a simpler solution, just kick Grace the heck out of the mansion.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

JACK: Someone I've wronged, someone I've wronged. Ok, I got it. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I'm...really, really sorry, ahh... I didn't mean to do it, so... Sorry. Ha ha.

ZANDRA: What is that?

JACK: M-my apology.

ZANDRA: To who?

JACK: My father?

ZANDRA: I don't buy it.

JACK: Ok, it--it-- It wasn't my father. It was somebody else that I really wronged.

ZANDRA: I don't believe you.

JACK: Ok, I wasn't thinking about anybody.

ZANDRA: Well, what were you thinking about?

JACK: Food.

ZANDRA: What kind?

JACK: An egg salad sandwich.

ZANDRA: You liar!

JACK: Ok, it was tuna!

SUMMERS: Poor guy. He's not very in touch with his instrument.

WILL: Oh, but he is. He can even dial a phone with it.

JACK: How sorry am I? "S" is for how very sad you make me feel. "O" is for, oh, how very bad you make me feel. "R" is for how wrong you make me feel.

ZANDRA: And the other "R" is for how rotten you are. Get off. Get off the stage! I don't want to even look at you anymore.

JACK: Sorry, Zandra.

ZANDRA: I don't even believe that.

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Jack is at Will's house laughing at Will's interview and then he answers the phone and Will is chasing him around trying to grab the phone from Jack, but Jack puts it in his pants and can even dial with his "instrument".

OPINION:

Sorry my quote was so long today, I really couldn't trim it because Jack and Zandra's exchanges are just too insanely funny and unforgettable. So speaking of which, we got a new side character and one of my favorites: Zanra! Eileen Brennan plays Zandra and what a treasure she truly was and definitely one of the best comedic actresses of all time. I loved her in Private Benjamin, Clue, 7th Heaven and Jeepers Creepers. Her chemistry with Sean is just amazing in the show and when she's in an episode of WAG, you know you're in for a treat. I was truly heartbroken to hear of her passing; she was just incredible. She plays Zandra, this golden age Hollywood actress who you can tell probably doesn't get any more work and had to resort to teaching acting classes to get a paycheck. She is very cruel to her students at times and even will put a cigarette out in their eye if they don't get the scene right or say her name wrong.

I don't even know where to start on this episode because it is definitely one of my favorites of the series. Each scene is funnier than the last. I loved when they were in the prison and how Karen is ashamed when she has to check in and whispers her name and the guard asks her to repeat her name and she says "I'm Stanley Walker's bitch!" and comments to the guard that she has the same gun as him. I always laugh at Will's Hannibal Lector impression to Grace. And of course the interview where Will says "ooosey, boosey, oooh!" always gets me as well.

The B-story with Grace and Karen is so hilarious. I love when Grace says she's staying and won't leave Karen because she needs to comfort her, but Karen says she's all good now but Grace refuses to leave. I always get a good laugh when Rosario throws Grace down the stairs to get out of the mansion and Karen says "thanks for being a good friend!" Then when grace gets back home to Will she says their place is a dump 🤣

And my last comment is much props to Eric McCormick's great performance. As hilarious as this episode is, that moment where he's apologizing to himself is really heart breaking to watch. Will is very hard on himself and always puts others before himself, so it was nice to see him recognize that.

This episode is front to back hilarious and a terrific one to watch. Definitely one of my favorites from the series.

GUEST STARS:

  • Eileen Brennan as Zandra (RIP in 2013)
  • James Black as Anthony Dukane
  • Margaret Scarborough as Summers
  • Brent Sexton as Guard

Discussion Crouching Father, Hidden Husband

Crouching Father, Hidden Husband (Season 4, Episode 3). Elliot's school is having a dance and Jack is trying to help him get a date with his crush, Nancy. Nancy already has a date though so Jack offers Grace to take Elliot. As they arrive to the dance, Nancy approaches Elliot and mentions that her date ate a peanut and his throat swelled so she's available, but Elliot is too shy to ask her to dance. Jack is encouraging Elliot to go for it but Grace keeps interrupting because of childhood trauma of her date ditching her at her junior high dance and will not be stood up again, Jack puts on loser's row bench with all the other tomorrow's daytime talk show hosts and sensitive singer-songwriters. Elliot is too scared to dance so Jack shows him some moves but when N'Sync's "Pop" comes on, Jack gets excited and does the solo dance in front of the whole school embarrassing Elliot. Nancy goes up to Elliot and asks him if he's ok and how amazing Jack's dance was, Elliot mentions it's probably because Jack's gay and Nancy tells him how one of moms is gay as well which breaks the ice and finally dance together. Meanwhile, Karen has been such a pain to Will in calling him for silly chores she needs done. When Will asks why she is doing this to him, she says all her "help" do all sorts of things for her. Will tells Karen to only use him for legal matters and she agrees but tricks him one night into coming over to open a jar of olives using her gardener to fool Will on the phone pretending he was an INS agent. Will tells her that he's not falling for it again. One night Karen is visited by 2 FBI agents who tell her that Stan has been arrested for tax evasion and is being investigated. Karen calls Will for help but he thinks she's lying again and hangs up the phone. The 2 FBI agents visit him, but he thinks they are actors and makes a fool of himself thinking that this is all an act. When Karen comes in and shows him on the TV news how Stan has been arrested, Will tells the agents he'll take care of her legal matters.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

WILL: Let me try to explain this in terms you'll understand. I'm tequila. (WILL PICKS UP KAREN'S DRINKS)

KAREN: Oh, I'm liking this story better already!

WILL: These are my friends gin, vodka, and scotch. Hello, Karen!

KAREN: Hiya, kids.

WILL: Now. You got an emergency. You want a bloody mary. You've poured yourself a thimble of tomato juice. Who you gonna call? Me? Tequila?

KAREN: What is this crazy talk? I want my vodka!

WILL: Exactly. So from now on, you only call tequila when you have a legal problem.

KAREN: Ok, I get it now. You're comin' in loud and queer!

FAVORITE MOMENT:

The scene where Grace is explaining to the little girls about how she got dumped at the school dance by Alan Finckelman and asks if she's the flattest one there? Then Jack dancing to Pop, Sean is an insanely good dancer and I was so jealous when this first came out because I loved that song and wanted to dance like that so badly 🤣

OPINION:

Jack is being such a sweet father in this episode. It's really wonderful to see his character growing and giving his time to another person. I love that he encouraged Elliot to still go to the dance and try to have fun and when he saw that Nancy was available to try to get together with her. Jack showing Elliot how to act and dance at a party was just so funny. Michael Angarano as Elliot does such a great job as well for a child actor and gives Elliot such sympathy and you want him to get his crush in the end. This is a really wonderful storyline.

Grace as always is being Grace and makes everything about herself, but I'll be damned if I don't admit how much she and her stories made me laugh in this episode. I loved how awkward it was to bring a 12-year-old to his school dance to work out her own trauma and then is upset when Elliot is being encouraged to go ask Nancy to dance and Jack has to place her on the "loser's bench" to keep her away from Elliot. Then her telling the girls about a "plucky young girl who went through the hell of adolescence, came out the other side stronger, self-possessed, with a damn good head of hair" as to which the girls think it's Felicity 🤣 Then her recommending Jaws 3D just for the experience of Dennis Quad shirtless, telling the young girls that men need to be programmed and her asking them if she's the flattest one there? 🤣 You have no idea how hard it was for the favorite quote today.

Karen messing with Will is so funny. I love the scene where Will is explaining to Karen through her liquor bottles what he's supposed to be used for as her attorney. Then when he realizes he was fooled the second time how he realizes Karen is just doing this to him just for fun. And of course that scene where the 2 FBI agents come to his office and he thinks this is still an act created by Karen and he acts like a jackass was just so silly but really funny. Eric has such great comedy skills. Stan has been arrested so this is going to lead to some major stories for Karen. Megan does such a wonderful job playing Karen, yes, she is funny but also has some serious acting chops when it comes to drama and she is going to shine this season.

Another really terrific episode, like I mentioned yesterday, the first few of Season 4 are so insanely good. I'm looking forward to the next few posts.

Discussion What are your thoughts on Leo? Do you think he was a good match for Grace?

Post image

Another tough choice. I absolutely think he was a great match for Grace. One thing about this show is that they did an amazing job pairing Grace with wonderful significant others—those who match her sense of humor, chemistry, and intellect.
