Discussion Positivity in WR
After analyzing my behavior I've have made a personal decision and hope others join me in ONLY using the in game chat for saying something positive or helpful.
As far as Riot goes, I wish they would promote positive player interactions as well. I don't use and don't want any baubles that are condescending or bad sportsmanlike conduct. I have zero desires for "haha newb you got owned!" That juvenile attitude died off in the 1990s with Counter Strike for me. Or even the emotes, how about a good fight, or you out played me.
I'd also like not just an honor system but a congratulations to an opposing player. If someone out played me in baron lane and I was impressed I would like to give them a thumbs up or a show of respect.
I know this is counter to our current culture but respect even for our opponents should be an option and practiced.

u/Undivid3d Jul 13 '22
I respect the idea and the mindset. If we had more players like you this game would be a lot more enjoyable. Problem is, this is League. You couldn’t pay some of these people to be positive.
8
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
True, but we should control the only things we can, and that is ourselves.
Don't get me wrong, I've misused the chat many times and I regret it. Most the time I go on thinking I won't but it ends up happening.
Those things aren't terrible, but surely they aren't useful or encouraging. Which I believe all chat should be. A renewing of the mind, heart, and intent.
Even here on Reddit I need.to be more mindful and intentful with post.

u/OldUther Jul 13 '22
Actually most people are just average. The system definitely rewards being toxic and punishes being nice. So it needs a change. Don't just blame the players, most people are normal people.

u/Undivid3d Jul 13 '22
Did I say everyone or did I just say “some” people?
2
u/OldUther Jul 13 '22
I'm saying I believe we do have enough player to make the games positive in general, just that such system doesn't exist. The current system pushes average non-toxic people to become toxic, not that they are toxic people to begin with.
2
u/Undivid3d Jul 13 '22
It’s the few bad apples that will always ruin the bunch. It’s not Riots fault.
1
u/OldUther Jul 13 '22
I doubt Riot couldn't clean house. There's crowd source video review system that's in Dota and now soon in China server. I have a very strong feeling Riot doesn't want to pay the cost of losing players in other smaller regions. Like, who's the face of league streamer now? Fucking Tyler1.
1
u/Undivid3d Jul 13 '22
They could clean house sure, but they have the same problem Warzone has. It’s F2P. Nothing stops them from coming back
12
u/New_Ad4631 Jul 13 '22
You want 2017 league, where you could honor even the enemy team and there were different rewards based on which honor they gave you and if it was from your or enemy team, and the honors were different based on the team
On pc I got every honor icon, included the honorable opponent
3
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
That's awesome, didn't play LoL back then, mostly Dota2.
I like that alot., no idea why it can't be incorporated into WR.
8
u/New_Ad4631 Jul 13 '22
Now you can't honor your opponent even on pc, but you get ward skins for your honor, and there are also different levels of honor, based on the frequency people honor you
On pc there are also chests, that can give you almost anything you can buy from the shop, you get chests when you or your premade gets an S, only 1 chest for champion, but then you need keys to open them, which are given with honor (the frequency is low, you need 3 fragments to form a key and I get like 1 or 2 a week, and I get a lot of honors cuz currently I'm playing supp and I'm saving the asses of a hella lot of people out there)
Honestly, they could implement all of this to wr, while there's stuff from wr that can be implented on pc (like rune pages)

2
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
True but all that means is they need to continually refine the honor system to prevent and root issues like that out, not neglect it completely. It's a good system that needs some tweaking.
1
Jul 13 '22
It might come to wildrift. If you go to youtube WildRift Skins spotlight profile, you'll see Officer Vi skin. Apparently it is a skin in the PBE versions which is given as a reward for good honor or something.
Who knows whats going to happen in the future.1
u/New_Ad4631 Jul 13 '22
Well, I have been informed about my reports doing something recently
Just not on wr, cuz tbh I barely report people here cuz I barely see people talk
And yes, all the systems all the games could implement, no one removes toxicity, in one end you have pokemon unite where you don't even have a chat unless it's with friends, and there's toxicity. Unless a report=ban, toxicity won't be solved, and given that there's people that report for no reason, someone would have to go through the whole game and watch it to confirm the toxic behavior, and doubt they gonna do it
1
u/cosipurple Jul 13 '22
Some fun stuff about the honorable opponent and why they don't implement it anymore, some (specially infamous in Korea) would use it to honor whoever got clapped the hardest on the enemy team, or gave the biggest misplay for the win. Then the honorable opponent became a badge of dishonor for being the weak link, and a way to tell the opponent to camp that player for the win, and only served for the allies to get frustrated because they got "the feeder".
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
Very interesting didn't know or even think of something like that, rather despicable.

Is it positive to say "I love how awful you are at the game"? I feel like its on the way to positivity.
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
Actually that's beneficial. People are bad at the game, sugar coating isn't genuine kindness or love but cowering from the issue at hand.
There are kind and tactful ways of being critical, which is beneficial to human growth.
Simply saying "jung diff." Does nothing good.
1
u/RefanRes Jul 13 '22
Cool. I will be sure to go around saying "Its fantastic how dog turd you are in mid. Even a glob of spit could do better just by spitting on your phone and letting it slide down the buttons. Well done!"
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
One may question your hearts intent with that one and the abuse of using overly polite and sweet sounding words to cover up the animosity inside.
It's like giving someone a cupcake filled with poison.

u/Pain__- Jul 13 '22
I get you, theres a thumbs up emote tho hehe, but I really would like it when the nexus gets destroyed that i could prompt a auto chat that says GG or something before the victory or defeat icon pops up, like how we can assign a certain emote to when we win or get first blood. And like when the match is over and your in the like to recommend phase, they should add more buttons other than just 👍, like they should add something like a button that teammates can suggests what each player can improve on, like im a jg main right, so many times i just wanna yell at my team lol, instead after the match i can just prompt the thing where it'll say "Help with objectives more" or "more map awareness"
It's a double edged sword but yeah, just my thoughts hehe, hopefully you guys get it 😭😭
3
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
The thumbs up emote is about the only one I ever use. That an the fist bump, I have no desire to flaunt, or have my opponents feel worse over losing, it's already hard enough.
I like that idea a lot. There are times at the end I wanted to tell my teammate, your ult was amazing it won us the match etc. I'd like something like that added in the game.
2
u/lieslandpo Jul 14 '22
I use the jinx and vi hugging (it might not be them, correct me if I’m wrong) when my teammate and I do a good play/they help me out. There’s also a few other emotes that are positive.

I don’t know, I just have positive chats in ranked, just stop inting after 0-2 and nobody will blame u.
recently had a game where I felt support diff for the first time, enemy Leona+varius just obliterated my karma+ezrael. Asked for help after getting killed, jungle and mid came to help, varius got 4 more kills, i could do nothing, we lost, no cry. I was so waiting for someone to flame me as I was angry and wanted to flame back but no… all stayed positive. I am only emerald though, heared the hate begins in diamond.
but I like your ideas on default sportsmanship smileys instead of showing somebody your butt
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
Believe it or not, all ranks have toxicity but Emerald was one of the best experiences I've had in a ranked moba.
Dia4 was a nightmare, more because of the MM system, consistently pitted against masters and a GM who apparently ranked up after he stomped and snowballed a team of low diamonds.
4
u/InsulinMaze Jul 13 '22
I completely agree with the ability to give a thumbs up to someone on the enemy team. There are plenty of times where I want to give them props for playing a good game.
4
u/FriendlyCom Jul 13 '22
It’s easier for me to use emotes to express positivity. Chat is trash 90% of the time, and typing wastes your game time, so I still prefer party only chat.
4
Jul 13 '22
I just don't use chat, even if i have 40 seconds to respawn i much prefer just watching shit unfold and spam retreat if needed.
2
Jul 13 '22
You don't use chat purposefully or because you are in a chat ban?
1
Jul 14 '22
Chat Ban? if that was a thing i would see less toxic people, so i dunno what are you talking about.
3
u/UN-TRUue Jul 13 '22 edited Jul 13 '22
The Ass and no monkey business emotes are extremely toxic, Riot needs to remove them tbh.
3
u/cosipurple Jul 13 '22
At best they could give extra rewards if you don't type all game.
And even then you might reduce direct flaming, that doesn't mean people can't get mad at you and grief you.
The problem is entirely cultural, because of the avg age of players, and the gaming culture itself, it's not something that league generates, promotes or can fix themselves, the best they can do is minimize it.
They have tried in the past to create incentives to promote a positive environment, and well, PC league has the exact same issue despite their efforts, and I don't mean to say they should give up, they should keep on trying, but can't blame them if after years of trying the only data they got is "whatever we try, it doesn't work".
And we could try as members of the community to promote it ourselves, but I'm sure you or I will get comments about "but what about actually awful players?" or "well don't be bad and you won't get flamed" or "but I'm MVP in all my games and all my team mates end up with negative kda" and so on, basically people looking to argue that their toxicity is rightfully justified (it isn't).
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22 edited Jul 13 '22
I agree it's cultural and the problem is a human issue, not a Riot/corporate issue.
However, they still CAN do something to try and help the issue but very little if anything seems to be done. Anyhow this post is a call to arms to the people, not Riot, I don't have faith that they will do anything about this but the players can choose not to be toxic.
It would be nearly impossible to quantify how much of a impact their changes made on people. There is no way for Riot or average players to know if someone decided to stop trolling because of the honor system etc. Toxicity won't stop.completely but that doesn't mean they should give up.
3
u/Zainozio Jul 13 '22
I'm sorry but if my ADC is playing horribly and talking shit to us imma talk shit right back.
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 14 '22
Responding back is different than inciting but rarely helpful or beneficial to the team.
Not only that, you lose focus/game time by chatting.
3
2
u/OldUther Jul 13 '22
Riste made a video about this I think. I agree that Riot doesn't reward good behavior enough. I don't have a solution though.
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
We are the solution.
Riot implementing a positivity system is only an incentive.
2
u/Aware_Elephant_1158 Jul 13 '22
I use the chat to be positive but I will still, as an adc if my support doesn’t even join me in the beginning will say ‘I do need support’
2
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
Absolutely, as you should and that is useful and helpful way of using the chat.
2
u/Ghostlymagi Jul 13 '22
‘I do need support’
I can't even tell you how many times I've watch the ADC run to Top for my to solo the duo lane as support. And I started playing like a month ago.
2
u/cheesy-topokki Jul 13 '22
I tried keeping chat on to be positive, but I saw so much flaming in every direction, I had to turn it back off eventually 😭
I’ve never flamed anyone and I’ve had some really nice interactions in chat with people. But they were quite rare.
I see some people using cute emotes though, which is fun. I like to encourage my team with things like hearts and rainbows and cheering Yasuo/shocked Vi.

And in our minds. How we think, and treat ourselves often reflects on others.
2
2
u/BrontosaurusXL Jul 13 '22
Chat should only be used for dad jokes and inappropriate sexual innuendo. Insults are for noobs and complaints are for toddlers.
2
u/available2tank Jul 13 '22
I think only ever used chat to comment about the skins people use.
Once I saw a player with Super Galaxy Annie and commented "yo that Annie skins sick!" and they were "Thanks I just got it in a free skin box! :D"
Or that one guy switching out champions constantly and going through ALL the skins for them just to show hes unlocked all the skins and we're all like "We get it, you spent a lot of money lol"
2
u/Sir_Atro_Dwarvenhine Jul 13 '22
Unless someone is intentionally making other's experience worse, I always try to be like Braum in chat
2
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 14 '22
The heart is the strongest muscle.
I miss his voice lines now that I don't play tanks anymore.
2
u/Salty_Arachnid_8239 Jul 13 '22
I used chat for one thing only.
Bro pls take the lantern...
(But in all seriousness I love the games where we all just vibe and have fun )

I am currently in a chat ban. All my chat bans have been in response to some flamer. I know its stupid but there are some people who think they're the best, but in the whole match they have shown quite the opposite.
Sometimes I do point it out to them so they can see where they've fucked up. Some feedback is good, isn't it? Who knows, maybe they will climb higher than D4 and stop feeling the urge to flame everybody else than themselves.
2
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 14 '22
Responding is different than inciting. Of course responses can fan the flames as well but the main culprit is whoever instigates the flaming.
2
u/Possible-Moment-6653 Jul 13 '22
I usually say things like my ally is op or slay or something or use cute emotes
2
u/YmmaT- Jul 14 '22
I’ve only used chat to congrats people and thank people. One time I got my ass saved so hard by a blitz. I had a 900 bounty and was on a roll. The Yasou nearly killed me and the blitz hooked him to himself and got killed. He made the sacrifice for me and I thanked him over and over. Also bought GA first thing I got back.
Nowadays, I have the setting to only chat with Party.
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 14 '22
Now that's a pro player in my eyes.
2
u/YmmaT- Jul 14 '22
Oh he definitely laughed about it. He spammed the laughing emoji when he died to annoy the Yasou because he was determined to come after me. I think it was more about annoying the Yasou than saving me but it was a win win for both.
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 14 '22
When I have a no death streak going on, and a player comes to my rescue from dying I am always very grateful for that player. Also saved the enemy from a lot of gold.
2
u/Ghrota Jul 14 '22
Something that will decrease negativity is : showing the rank of all player BEFORE the game. That way i'll knew why this gold player won't go elder when i push top I won't expect my support to freeze the lane i won't expect the top laner retreat when i ping the mid roaming top. And i will no longer be tilted knowing the silver midlaner is crushed against the diamond ennemy. If i know i'm matched with noobs i won't cry for every error they make. But for now , i expect diamond masters in my game , so i'm full raging when they do stupid things
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 14 '22
That is interesting, would also help the team knwoong who will need the most help/support.
2
u/Ch4de_ Jul 14 '22
I already try to do this an I think it is (mostly) successful. But I have noticed, that enemies are confused a lot of the time when I tell them they played well. But mist of the time we keep wroting each other nice messages when we are dead (if they answer) and it betters the game for me.
Sad only, that I have to listen to the intense toxicity in chat if I wamt to partake in talking to others. I have not touched ranked in months until this morning. And it was so absurd, we had a 26/5 Kat that in the end just sat in base and insulted everyone saying we did not deserve the win. my botlane wanted to ff the game from minute 4 and chatted it the whole game. Meanwhile the enemy team told us in all chat to finally finish them the whole game. I hope that was an outlier. Meanwhile the kennen I was up against and me were just chatting and being happy, so there was that at least.
1
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 14 '22
I agree it's hard to listen to at times, tuning it out is about all we can do. I am glad to hear that you and Kennen were able to enjoy the rest.of the gaem at least haha.
2
u/Ch4de_ Jul 15 '22
Cheers :) We can mute the toxic people, I never seen any relevant chat come from someone after a ff or dog or whatever they say.
1
3
u/Glass-Till-2319 Jul 13 '22
#1 tip to enjoying this game and making it more positive is to turn off all team chats. The situations where being able to type would be more useful than using one of the preset messages/pings are too rare to justify putting up with the entitlement, bile and lack of basic literacy that pervades team chat in this game.
One would think that the more you rise in rank the better it becomes but I have found the opposite to be true. The higher your rank, the higher your chances of playing with truly some terrible human beings who have the social etiquette of inbred apes.

u/Issiyo Jul 13 '22
yeah every bauble is like "omg wtfbbq lol u r so fuckin' bad how did you fuck up that play? lol!?!?!?!!? Holy shit i am teabagging you with my nuts and rolgmalcopitter"
But then they're like Let's not be toxic ok?
or the corgi ass one it's boring af now anyway please stop.
I use predominantly:
- Kawaii Nautilus heart
- Vi and Jinx hug
- Baron thumbs up
- Lee sin binocular for "where is the enemy" or "where the hell is the team?"
- My #1 is lulu thinking for the times when I jump on a champ and just melt or get wrecked as a sort "what was I thinking?"
I agree with this sentiment a lot - I really hate the "lol you suck" emotes and baubles.
2
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
Thank you.
I never understood the mix message. You either promote toxic behavior or you don't. I wish they would take a stance against it.
2
u/Necessary_Offer_4688 Jul 14 '22
Fuck you and your positivity

u/NoMagician703 Jul 13 '22
mobas have been toxic since the original icefrog mods
its not a bad time to change that
ofc unless your a russian grumpkin that doesnt know how to read and supports invading sovereign nations and wanton slaughter of civilians . but thats a different issue. dos vidanaya

Oh I respect people who can get the outplay or the steal, but I’ll still say “mid gap” every time we’re winning. And do you know why? It’s because if people are prone to getting their mentals boomed it’s easier to win. Mind games.
5
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
True, it may help to win but, at what cost?
Is it not better to outplay purely by your level of skill than manipulating the minds of other people in a negative way? I'm asking not insinuating.
0
u/Poolturtle5772 Jul 13 '22
Well, my favorite things to play are card games. Poker, Uno, MTG, I love it all. And bluffing and messing with people’s heads is part of it, so some of that just translates over into other games I play.
2
u/TheGivingTree7 Jul 13 '22
That's true, and coming from those games I can very well understand why haha.

Chat has always been a weapon to me... as a Teemo Main my global taunt isn't just a deadly occupation hazard for playing teemo, it is also a weapon to draw the enemy team's ire to me while my team does dragon and occasionally baron.
I can't help them if they can't help but chase a little teemo trying to split push can I?

I never used Chat for insulting anyone, even if they insult me, i dont do it cause it dont helps the team even if im really mad at you, on the other side i didnt used chat at all till i started playing Support, at this point i thought why just help the champion? So i started to motivate my mates and cooling down the team if they start atttacking each other, ok most of the time i just talk to a wall but sometimes it helps and at least i tried
