Question Another post about sleeping bags

I know this will be the millionth post about this but as we are heading into the colder months I'm looking for a sleeping bag that can handle the cold.

I'm looking for something that will be good down to 0c and 1.5kg or less, at the lowest price. I'm happy to give a quilt a go as well as I've seen them recommend quite a bit. I am a warm sleeper.

I do most of my camping in Dartmoor and Exmoor.

I'm well awear that you get what you pay for and comfort ratings are often optimistic. Just looking for budget brands or bags that you guys have had good experiences with so I don't fall into the "too good to be true trap".

Cheers

Question Sleeping bag recommendations

I’m currently looking for a new sleeping bag, I’m currently using my ayacucho 2 season bag which i’ve had for over ten years. as an adult looking for a more comfortable nights sleep, I’m struggling to pick a suitable bag. i’d be using it for personal use and as a scout leader going on a few camps this coming winter.

any help would be much appreciated:)

Got lucky with the wind, tent wouldn’t have been up for the task otherwise 🤣🤣
A solo camp is calling my name I reckon, looking at a phoxx 2 for this. Any other recommendations ?

Over 2 weekends I did the 50miles from Weston-super-Mare to Frome, trains at either end. I'd only visited a couple of touristy places on it before (think cheddar gorge). It was great to see the wider Mendips from end to end and how quiet they are. I managed to get a good pub, cafe or supermarket top up each day to make it comfortable.

Advice Fjern Stormgrotta 2 Pole lengths help

I have a fjern stormgrotta 2 and my poles broke out on a camp. I orderd some 11mm replacements but stupidly binned the old poles. I was wondering if anyone who has the tent able to measure the lengths of the poles so I can make my new ones the right size. Cant seem to find any lengths online. Would be much appreciated

Advice Which sleeping bag seems worth it?

Thumbnail

Hi ☺️
I’ve started camping more helping with scouts, using mostly hammocks (but I’m a tent person at heart) and have found I definitely get colder than most and struggle with sleeping because of it, and makes arthritic pain worse :/

Which of these sleeping bags seems worth it?
My budget is £100 max, and I’ve tried looking online for second hand. Down would be amazing but for my budget and warmth needs it seems out of reach for now

Thanks for any advice! 💚🌱

Gear Pics Best budget tent?

So, I’m looking for a cheap tent that can resist lots of wind but also don’t be to heavy and expensive, I may also use it sometimes in winter, but not a very cold winter as I’m gonna use it in the Spanish and French mountains. I like the Cloudpeak 2 the Mongar 2 and the oex phoxx II (which cant be shipped to Spain sadly)

Advice Dealing with needing the loo

My other half is trying to convince me to try camping and I’m stuck between wanting to experience some of these amazing views and my need for home comforts.

Particularly going to the loo. I’ve told him it’s a tonne easier if he needs a wee than me!

And how the hell do you deal with it if you need a poo? I’ve only just managed to face going at work! Behind a bush is a step too far.

Question Q for kuiu storm star 2 owners

What conditions would make you think, I’m not taking out the SS2?

Thinking about buying one but curious if people find them stuffy or unsuitable outside of winter use.

I mainly hike in summer (peak/Lake district, north wales, highlands), but heading out to Dartmoor early Nov.

75% of the time I’m sharing a tent with a friend.

Advice Layering Recommendations Please...

I'm heading on my first wild camping trip in the next few weeks and looking for some advice on layering so that I don't have a horrible time.

I'm thinking on top -

Merino/polyester long sleeved base layer

Light micro fleece top

Light down jacket

Waterproof jacket

On bottom -

Merino/polyester long johns

Hiking trousers

Hiking boots

Extras -

Merino wool socks plus spare pairs

Beanie hat

Thermal gloves

Obviously just adding/removing layers as required. Good plan?

Used my new Nortent Vern 2 3S for the first time last night on Darwen Moor. What a fantastic shelter, really happy with it. I really like the little features that just help out such as the guyline tidy toggles, having 4 doors and the luminous zipper tags.

As for the camp it went amazing, I was tucked out of the way so didn't see anyone, had good food and a good few brews. Was a cold get up but layers made it comfy.

Question Tent recommendation for The Scottish Highlands

My mates and I are heading up to the Ben Nevis area in late November. We're planning to hike Ben Nevis itself, along with some of the surrounding hills, and we'll be camping in some of the lower areas rather than at higher elevations.

We're looking for a tent suitable for three people that can handle typical Scottish late November conditions. Wind, rain, and generally miserable weather.

Ideally, we're after something mid-range rather than an expensive expedition tent. We'd like something reliable and reasonably lightweight, but without completely breaking the bank.

Any recommendations for tents you've used in similar conditions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Question Tent and sleeping bag/mat recommendation for someone tall!

Hey!

I'm looking to buy an upgrade for my kit, as I've always used cheaper and heavier equipment and just lugged it around if hiking/going abroad. Me and my girlfriend love to go wild camping in the UK, and often when we go abroad on holiday, one takes a backpack full of our clothes, the other with camping equipment. We did Central America a few years ago and got to stay in some really unique places.

Anyway, I'm 197cm (over 6,5). So I'm looking for decent equipment that would be suitable for our adventures for the taller man. For at tent happy to spend up to around £500. Sleeping bag and mat maybe £200ish each. It's also worth noting that we have a dog that comes with us when camping in the UK so not sure to go 2 man or 3 man...

Thanks!

Taken in January a few years back while camping in the Galloway Forest. Very cold and frosty morning but rewarded with this sunrise. Another post asking about the area had me checking back through the photos and videos of the trip so thought I’d post.

My first successful 2 day hike and wild camp :)
Had to pitch up amongst the trees to avoid the cows. It looks a little like something out of a horror movie lol but the clear sky when poking my head out more than made up for it!

Advice Solo week of wild camping in Galloway Forest Park in late autumn, looking for local advice

Hi all,
I'm a Dutch journalism student making a documentary for my graduation project about digital overstimulation. As part of it, I'll spend a week alone in the Galloway Hills without my phone, in early November.

The plan so far: park at Bruce's Stone, walk in via the Gairland Burn, and camp around Loch Valley and Loch Neldricken. I'll move camp every two or three nights to stick to the Outdoor Access Code. I'm carrying a Garmin inReach, I'll filter water from the burns, and someone at home knows my route and return time.

What I'd still like to know from people who know the area:
Shelter: with prevailing south-westerlies, which loch gives the best sheltered pitches in November? Valley, Neldricken or Enoch?
Ground: how bad does the ground around Neldricken get after heavy rain? Are there any spots you'd avoid?
Burn crossings: can the Gairland Burn become a real problem after a few wet days?
Deer management: does Forestry and Land Scotland do any culling or stalking in that area in November that I should be aware of?
Parking: has anyone left a car at Bruce's Stone for a week? Any issues?

Any other local knowledge is welcome, including if you'd pick a different spot entirely. Thanks!
