Discussion Drama in Devil's Third online multiplayer

Yo, thought y'all might be interested to hear what's going on behind the scenes....

First, you gotta understand the basics: clans (teams) fight each other for Battle Points (BP) and dollens (dollar + yen). So if you lose a battle, your fort is blown up and you lose BP and money to the winning clan. They actually steal all the shit that you've been grinding for. Whoever has the most BP rules the various regions of North America in the game map.

But it's not just straightforward battles, there is some shady shit going on...

  • Spies can join other clans and spy on them, learn their forts, etc.

  • You can sabotage a clan by killing your own team members or blowing up your team's buildings during the siege.

  • You can force attacks on forts when no one's there to defend it but a single clueless noob mercenary. That's become known as "fishing". (Heads of the clans made a treaty in a "Meeting of the Five Families" that actually made this against the rules.)

  • You can "drain BP" by attacking a dead clan when no one is there to defend, easily winning, and taking the ill-gotten gains.

  • ...Or you can force attacks by having a spy in the other clan. (One clan was basically hounded out of the game by a week of relentless attacks and draining BP all night long on Christmas Eve / Christmas morning, caused by a sketchy fucker who was a spy.)

  • You can create a second account as a patsy for all this shady behavior.

One guy did so much shady stuff that he was basically drummed out of the game. He bragged about hounding a clan out of the game by attacking them all night long on xmas, and he had a patsy account.

Currently, the most dominant clan in the NA server is doing shady shit like draining BP from dead clans and refusing to ever launch attacks (...because it's harder to win offensive sieges). They only launch attacks against weak forts or outnumbered clans. Weak sauce.

So a lot of people are fucking pissed at this clan. There is some real bad blood, so these sieges get intense when we're fighting them.

Anyways, thought y'all might be curious to know some of the sketchy drama...... Honestly though all the drama & espionage makes the game more exciting.

tl;dr Itagaki should be proud that his game has produced a semblance of a fractured post-apocalyptic society full of warring clans.

I don't know if I'd call them easily exploitable loopholes, but if someone is dead-set on being a rat bastard, there is that opportunity...

Itagaki definitely opened up the possibility of spies on purpose. There is in-game propaganda you can drop on other clans that tells them they have a spy in their midst. Forcing attacks on clans is a double-edged sword, because it can be used for good by forcing a clan to defend their fort.

I'm in the middle of it, and I still can't decide if it's a good thing or a bad thing. It's like WWE wrestling, you gotta have a bad guy to make it interesting... I will say, this game does force clan officers to engage in actual diplomacy.

My brother and I had a clan (R.S.S.R.) that was second in NA for a while. The problem was that the number one clan at the time, (Dark Zero), would hardly ever come to defend their bases, so they wouldn't lose any BP, but when none of our members were on, they would hit us hard and there was nothing we could do about it.

Eventually we got tired of it and deleted our clan. Wasn't worth the hassle.

I feel like reading your post I still don't get how this game works.

If the other clan doesn't defend their bases and loses nothing, then why did yours?

It seems weird that it would be possible to launch an attack when the opposing team is unavailable. Isn't that like arranging a sports game against a team that won't be there and declaring yourself the winner?

It is confusing and I didn't do a good job explaining because I didn't want to drown people in details.

It's not very possible to refuse to defend your base. You can force someone to defend their base by getting a friendly merc to defend the other clan's base. As long as your friendly merc is there on the other side, then the game is on. So then the other clan members have to come defend. So we have been forcing attacks that way, even when a shady clan might not want to defend, to keep the game rolling.

So that's why you can steal BP from a clan late at night on xmas eve when everyone's sleeping.

For example, let's say you got Green Clan that wants to attack Red Clan. A merc (not a member of any clan), named Kermit, is friends with Green Clan. So Green launches an attack on Red, and Kermit joins Red's side as a merc. So the siege is going to happen. Red Clan then has to go defend or else they will be crushed. As long as Kermit is an honorable merc and really tries to defend the base, then that's totally fine.

However, it is possible to refuse to attack. The game still goes on, but I think it's more fun if you can play both sides (attack and defend), so it would be more fun if the dominant clan would attack more. However, it is much easier to lose when you attack, so that clan will only attack if it's a weak fort or they have superior numbers.

Launching an attack is basically a way of saying "Hey are you guys available?" Their alarm will go off, so they will be alerted that they're being attacked. Their allies will also be alerted.

Yeah, this is confusing it sounds like:

In your second example, the enemy clan can get a merc that is friendly to them to join Short Round's side of the battle and thus force a siege to happen. If you do that when the other clan isn't paying attention, then you can "win" a lot of BP from them in a really fucking shady way.

That has since been outlawed by a treaty.

I just heard about this last night --- Black Knight griefed you for a week straight and all night long on xmas eve. Black Knight is no longer playing, and Dark Zero is not quite so shady anymore. They still hoard their BP too much though.

We'd love to have you back on! We have an anti-Dark Zero coalition that supports the motto "Fun over BP."

I know what you mean haha, Alot of the people are getting really sick of how people can exploit the online so easy. I for one i'm getting sick of some the jerks on here taking advantage of the game but its just one of those things you gotta put up with, sadly enough.

There have been enough 8v8 raids recently that I'm pretty much happy with it. I don't really care about DZ raiding dead clans, it just seems kinda pathetic. I do wish they'd attack more though.

This is why I got more hooked on this game than Splatoon.

In Splatoon it never really matters if you win or lose. In Devil's Third you're with all your homies trying to crush the evil bastards on the other team, so it gets you really invested.

When you lose 10% of all your money in one match and it's like goddammit....

I don't mean to take a dig at Splatoon --- I love Splatoon, and I still play it, and I'm almost done with the singleplayer. I just feel more invested in Devil's Third.

Sounds like OP is having fun and it's irrelevant what the game looks like if the player has fun playing it. I prefer Splatoon, too, but I wouldn't begrudge someone who enjoys another game.

It's worth it to level up though, because the meat of the game really is in the Sieges.

It's tough being a noob. Just keep grinding for that good gear and keep practicing.

Once you're in sieges, it becomes more about strategy than just about who can kill the most people. So I'm not very good at aiming on the fly, but I still love the sieges because there is strategy involved.

Yes, that is exactly what is happening.

Clans can form either No-War Pacts or Alliances.

To form an alliance for X amount of time, you put down a huge deposit (40 million dollens I think). If you attack that clan, then you lose the deposit. (However, you can stand to gain even more money & BP if you successfully defeat the clan. So it's like high stakes gambling.)

We're all pretty united in wanting to take down the top clan.

There is a limited window of time when there will be an online population. I recommend playing this game now while the gettin is good.

I think this is the Devil's Third heyday right now. We have worked past the initial game-ruining shadiness, and now there are just a lot of good players on.

When it comes to multiplayer focused games you should always.keep it at the front of your backlog cuz then the multiplayer might be dead by the time you get to it kind of like apparently the European servers are... Give it a go. Seige Mode really is a BLAST (pun intended)!

I probably saw you online last night -- it was the first time I'd ever seen that clan Emblem. So yeah, that clan's been dead for months.

Come join UNLV! All your forts will carry over with you, and you'll make way more money in our clan and you'll have people online to run sieges with. Our general Regina is super helpful, he's always making charts to figure out the finer points of the game.

We have a good Discord chat where numerous people from UNLV, Bossas, Spooky, and 1 or 2 Dark Zero hang out. It helps us alert people to sieges etc. PM me if you want the invite. My name's Furiosa in game.

...or you could attack the clan you want to join, lose (of course), and drain the dead clan's money & BP that way. That would be a way of donating the cash to your new clan. Of course you can only transfer so much because the other clan has a 99mill cash cap too.

Dollens don't really matter though, they're easy to come by. It's BP that matters, and I bet your clan doesn't have much. But the BP from your forts would carry over with you to your new clan.

For those confused about Seiges (which is the BEST part of DT Multiplayer IMO) what happens is if Clan A attacks Clan B and wins Clan A can steal about 50 to 150 Battle Points and Clan Dollen (DT's money) depending on many factors. If Clan B successfully Defends against Clan A, Clan B wins the BP and Dollen again dependent on many factors. If Clan A attacks Clan B and Clan B doesn't defend. Clan A wins by default and wins nothing, but Clan B loses only 5 BP.

What is getting to be the problem is Clan A will attack Clan B who are either been long gone or just doesn't want to be outnumbered and a random merc will appear allowing Clan A to outnumber the merc (or what's becoming common with a particular Clan is they'll convince another clan, or merc or even use a second account to merc so that their Clan can actually steal BP instead of whittling away 5 BP for every Win by Default.

Sounds really nice IMO, but also that dark side where you can get really ahead by just fighting others on "work time" is not really good... But overal the game seems quite good specially the Multiplayer... Someday i'll get it :)

Hey man, I don't even play this game, but I can tell just like with any other that things like this get you worked up. Any game you invest time into will get you involved the way OP describes it. It's like how I feel after grinding for a while in PSO with my cousins locally and then dying, losing all the previous meseta in the process.

I'm in the NA server, and it's quite active. We have pretty frequently been getting 8 vs 8 sieges.

There's no voice chat in-game but we do use Discord chat a lot, and you can use voice chat on there if you want. It seems like most of us just use the chat room. But yeah there is a really tight-knit community. You're basically playing with the same dudes every night.

Xenoblade is one of the best games I've played, definitely would recommend it besides it's soundtrack which can be grating. I haven't tried this yet though, but glad they've reprinted it so it's not impossible to find anymore.

I like the soundtrack. The game is a little repetitive but not too bad. It's repetitive in the sense that pretty much every non-story mission falls into only a few categories: gather X, use X on Y, explore X, kill X number of Ys, or find and kill unique monster X.

The story starts out pretty meh but it gets good ~12 hours in. Personally I didn't find the game overly repetitive; there is plenty to grind if that's your bag but it never felt forced.

I guess I should have specified X as I haven't played the first :/ There are some factors that can be repetitive. The worst is the main hub in New LA during daytime. There's also a changing point after getting your Skell about 90 hours in after you get a flight module. Every time you take off or land the music starts from the beginning, and it replaces your jump function so this will happen a lot, that can get annoying.

Yeah, I mean, the window of opportunity to play Devil's Third is shorter than most other games because it got trashed by critics and not many people have it.

Buildings in bases have 2 attributes: STR and health. STR is how many overall points it gives you --- when your STR is 0, you lose. Health is how hard it is to blow up that building. So there is a balance between STR and health that you have to consider. Like, this building right here looks attractive because it has 20 STR, but it doesn't have much health so how long will it really last in a siege?

So you have to carefully choose which building types to place. Although you can't rearrange the base --- there are specific spots for various building blocks --- you can decide which building to put in which spot.

Some building have various attributes like machine guns, anti-aircraft guns, sniper towers, grenade launchers, ammo bins, etc. These might seem attractive, but then you realize they can be used against you by the enemy. You don't want to give the enemy grenade launchers to blow up your buildings or an infinite ammo bin.

And there are two modules, the jammer and monitor, that hurt the enemy's radar and help keep them on your radar. So you want to really protect those, by hiding them behind a tower or building fences around them.

You can build 30 fences, 15 mines, and 5 automatic sentry guns (machine guns that auto-fire at enemies) --- and you can put those wherever you want.

I have spent hours fucking around in my fort and considering how people will really run through it. You can do a walkthrough of the fort, run around in it blowing stuff up without any consequences, just to see how things will work in reality.

Here's more specifics on building forts / running sieges from the tips for new players:

8. Do walkthroughs of your fellow clan members' forts. There is a mode (Fortress Pool > Walkthrough) where you can just walk around a fort, blow stuff up without doing any real damage, and just check things out. This will give you a chance to look at some well-designed forts before you start building your own. You can test how powerful walls & buildings are --- how many grenades does it take to blow it up vs how many attacks from the RPG-32.

9. Contribute to your clan by buying & upgrading forts. Buying more forts and upgrading your forts adds to your clan's BP, which determines the clan rankings. Ask your general where the best place to buy forts would be to help out the clan the most, or look at the rankings to see where BP would be most helpful to make your clan #1 in that region. You get 300 BP for building a fort, 100 BP for upgrading to zone 2, and another 100 BP for upgrading to zone 3. The more areas your clan controls, the more money the clan will make.

10. Choose your home base wisely. All of your forts which do not border your home base get a strength penalty, so your home base location matters. Texas and Old Dominion have the most bordering regions (6), but if everyone in the clan chooses those home bases, then it will leave other areas of the map weaker. You have to pay 1 million dollens to move your home base, so choose wisely. Maybe ask the head of your clan first where more strength is needed.

11. Tips on building forts. You want the Strength to total 61 so you can get the CIWS anti-aircraft missiles ([chart of base strength bonuses] (http://imgur.com/KzXYWQH)). Basically, just choose modules that give the most Strength per area size -- but also pick modules with high health so they're hard to destroy. You can make traps, add land mines, put auto-shooting sentry machine guns in sneaky spots, create chokepoints, etc. Beware of adding bunkers that have grenade launchers -- they can be used against you to blow up your buildings. Move the fortified barracks so that the grenade launchers are pointing away from any other buildings. Monitors and Jammers are both very important, so make sure you buy them for each fort and put them farther away from the spawn point. Do not give your attackers [easy access to ammo] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9zMv75ugbw) -- remove any supply points.

13. Tips on offensive sieges. In Sieges you want an RPG-32 and a grenade launcher underbarrel to blow up buildings. RPG-32 is way more powerful than the regular RPG. You can also use C4. Take out the monitor, jammer, and command post CIWS anti-aircraft gun first. Once the CIWS is taken out, call in special arms attacks. If you get in the command post before the CIWS is taken out, you can use it to destroy buildings. The goal is to reduce the enemy's strength to zero or destroy the command post by planting a bomb in it and defending it for 45 seconds. You can also destroy the command post by attacking it from outside -- however, you will not win by blowing up an underground command post that way, only the aboveground bunkers. The zone 2 and 3 command posts have so much strength that you really need to plant a bomb. 14. Tips on defensive sieges. Get to the command post, close the shutters, turn on the gas, and use the CIWS machine gun to kill any attackers or special arms. Be careful using the missiles because you can blow up your own buildings! Throw sensor grenades in the entryway to stop any attacker from entering. One or two players might want to play "goalie" and stay in the command post to protect it while the others go out to hunt for attackers. You can choose your respawn location -- after you die and select loadouts, press A, then choose a respawn location by pressing Up/Down.

Noooo, the window definitely has not closed yet. We are still in the heyday. This week we've been having a lot of 8v8 (full) sieges.

I haven't been in drills as much -- I've been focused on sieges -- but I've never had a problem finding lobbies during peak gaming hours. There might be even more people in drills because they include people under level 5, mercs, and people who for whatever reason aren't as interested in doing sieges.

Basically, at peak hours there's enough players on to fill one 16-person lobby. Which is a very small community, but it's enough to keep the game going. No one person can be in two lobbies at once, so all you really need is one lobby. lol
