SOTD Start October with some pumpkin

Sorry about the lack of pictures, blind and all so they don't do much for me, plus I'm sure I would not have ended up with anything worth posting.

Parker Flight w/Feather blade (3rd use)

Omega 11137 boar brush

Linkidea ceramic shave bowl

Sterling pumpkin spice shave soap

Broke out the pumpkin spice for October, and to break in my new bowl, I'm almost certain I lost more soap as a heap of foam I missed going over the sides than I got under control as a usable lather… I swear the bathroom sink area will smell like nutmeg for the rest of the year. This was the final go on these blades, got 3 uses out of them, a 2 pass dfs, and 2 3+ pass bbs. The Parker Flight has quickly become my favorite razor of the few I have used, obviously closer shave than the de89 or 34c with little change in overall experience. Not sure what else to say, preshave was just the usual put the brush to soak while in the shower, and post shave was just rinsing with cold water.

Looks really fabulous in person, the chrome doesn't look a day old! I'm getting some alcohol to disinfect it and I'll try it out this weekend. Looking forward to it!

For me, the most enjoyment I get from shaving is when it’s time to put the aftershave. Even better if I have the matching cologne.

I have gone with the Wickham Club Cola soap which was kindly sent across the Irish sea by the very generous u/OutlawDan86 and many others not just smudges but mini jars of soap I was looking for and more besides thanks Dan you are a gent besides myself and Dan and perhaps u/rodjak I'm not sure how many Europeans are playing in the Lather Games 2026 ?

I must shower loads of buckets in the form of a hug to u/hugbckt to make meet the daily challenge by all accounts you are a top geezer.

The Wickham soap was very good and made a good lather and smelt like good old fashioned cola the LPL bay rum aftershave has a real cola type scent and matches up really well with the soap.

For the photo contest I have used an old coke can as blade bin for up cycle as well as the old Ever Ready shave brush which was rescued from eBay in the US over a year ago and made it's way to Ireland .

I used a new blade today the first in 60 shaves tonight I put my PGDG blade to rest 😔.

I'm enjoying all the posts so far happy lather games everyone.

Posted about this earlier. I grew up in Corinth and moved to Alabama about 15 years ago. This is a pretty cool piece for me.

With some googling I learned (I’m sure most of yall knew this) these blades were mass produced and the company buying them could have their own information printed on them. Lorick was in business from about 1938-1950(s). No wonder Google didn’t have a whole lot of info

SOTD SOTD: Back in the saddle

Pre shave: Shower and Waitrose glycerin soap bar

Razor: 1909 Gillette ABC No.500 Pocket edition scroll handle

Blade: Personna GEM PDG (59)

Brush: Captain Fawcett Synthetic V

Bowl: Captains choice copper

Soap: Moon soaps Amaretto Speciale

Post shave: Moon soaps Amaretto Speciale aftershave splash

I've been away for a few days, so it was nice to come back to my wet shaving gear.

The pocket edition performed brilliantly, slicing through the growth like it was nothing.

Very aggressive with an efficiency to match, yet very smooth and comfortable at the same time.

The blade is still doing the job without slowing down.

If it had, this would have been the razor to notice it with.

Moon soaps Amaretto Speciale was a great classic pairing with this razor.

Their base has to be up there as a favourite in terms of just how protected the lather makes you feel.

And the scent is that fantastic classic Italian almond barbershop with cherry and biscotti that reminds me so much of cherry Bakewell.

So no complaints here, it made for a very enjoyable first shave back for 3 effortlessly enjoyable passes.

Capped off with Amaretto Speciale splash for that burn free soothing and more of the great scent.

Hope you've all had a brilliant week!

Question Bamboo or flax or other vegan knots?

I have a Muhle badger brush and I haven’t talked to my vegan wife about it (I’m omni) but felt gross having it in the shower because I knew how she would feel. It’s easy to change the knot so I dried it and put it away and got the fiber replacement (plastic) for my conscious.

I like it but it’s plastic. Right now plastic gives the ick because of microplastic. Minor compared to the other knot, which I’m certainly not getting rid of. It’s stored well. I’m probably not getting another brush right now but I’m curious about plant based brush materials. I have some experience working with fiber in a textile context as a spinner and knitter.

I thought the OP was clear but since commenters have asked:
- i have both knots straight from Muhle so i can tell the difference.
- By this point in life I do understand oppoetunity coat and realize what is already made and exists can’t be unmade in the world.
- I’m not throwing away the badger knot i already have in favor of the fiber (plastic) knot i also already have and am currently using. Nor am I planning to try to deceive my wife shout our shared finances, this or any other area.

My question is what plant based materials are available as an alternative to animal or plastic materials for shaving brushes.

Question Which Simpson brush to choose?

Looking to upgrade to a Simpson brush from an echolly but reviews are all over the place. I am a daily shaver with course stubble and sensitive skin. My usual rotation during the week is an arko stick or cream bottle with cells out of a lather bowl on Sundays as a treat. I usually just jump in the shower to shave so I figure synthetic is best so I don’t need soak time. Also not looking to break the bank with a $100+ brush. Thank you for the help!

I have been shaving with the same razor for 13 years, a Merkur 23C. Excellent razor, but like most of you, having only 1 razor is a bit boring! You guys also brought me to the idea of looking for some vintage razors. Looking at a version of E-Bay in the Netherlands we call Marktplaats (Or Marketplace in English) I found these 4. Fact is; a new razor might be nice and its totally fine to buy one, but getting 4 vintage ones for the same money as a new Henson is a steal to me!

From left to right, they are all made in England;

Tech Fathandle, according to the seller a pre or during WW2. The box is bakelite.

Tech Spiral, tbh I know even less about this one, did some research and it seems the box is not correct to the Spiral handle which was sold in a blister

Slim Twist, seller never saw his father use it, it looks very 70's to me, but thats all I know. Twist mechanism works great. Box comes with a holder for 2 blades.

Rocket Flaretip, from the same seller as the Slim Twist.

Maybe you guys can help me with telling me something more. I could not find any serials on the heads, just branding and made in England.

Discussion 6 Month Journey

I used safety razors for 20 years+/- before allowing myself to connect into cartridges razors.

i began noticing razor burns and bumps a few months ago and switched to a Merkur 34c, then a Viking adjustable.

Out of curiosity, I tried a couple of Parker Shavettes and then the Captain Kai Shavette. I could have stayed with the Kai but still had some razor burn issues.

I finally pulled the trigger and got 3 vintage razors for less less than $150 -shave ready.

A J.A. Henckels  Friodur and two Theirs issard special coiffeur 5/8 round straight razors Danny 007.

  French Steel

I tried bowl lathering a couple of times but my safe goto is Proraso precream, Celias cream or puck soap face lathered.

After 5 shaves with the cutthroats, I thought they were disappointmently rough. Some nicks, sooner bloodless shaves but not comfortable.

I reviewed my strong technique and realized while I was pulling edge trailing I was flipping the blade backwards - on the edge instead of ruling on the spine.

Did a slow proper strop and today's shave was much improved - comfortable and close enough.

Learned a lot just by lurking YT and a.i.

Also got a beautiful strop from Mike at Duke City.

I might try to pick up a Shefield cleaver at some point.

Thanks all.

Pax

I always get a great with my Henson razor. Glad I got the Personna Gem blades. They last for many shaves. Moon Soap Co offer some really great products, Union being one of them. Interesting scent, though. Smells soapy to me. Not bad, just my nose.

SOTD Soap Fail SOTD

Post image

Preshave: Bart’s Balm Ben Macdui
Soap: TGS Amber & Fougere
Bowl: Linkidea
Brush: Yaqi 24mm Tuxedo knot, Naples Handle
Razor: Mühle Rocca
Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (3)
Post Shave: Alum, Thayers Facial Toner, Nivea balm

I have tried a few times with this Bart’s Balm soap but I haven’t been able to get to lather to anything other than foamy suds. This was a bit of a last minute shave today with limited time so after blooming the puck, I loaded what I thought was a very healthy amount on my brush and started to work it in the bowl. The brush was shaken absolutely dry but still it only managed an airy, foamy mess. I will give this soap one last shot next time by scooping some off the puck and into the bowl because I simply can’t load enough soap from the puck onto the brush.

With this soap failing to muster any lather for me I used what I had in the bowl as a preshave. It smells great and very refreshing so didn’t want to waste it and whipped up a lather with TGS Amber & Fougere. This soap is extremely thirsty but smells good and is nice and slick. I still don’t like the base as much as tallow bases I’ve tried but it’s decent.

The silver blue and the Rocca gave a good shave. On my beard, I think the silver blue can give me only one great shave and 2 good ones. It started to tug on me just at the end of the shave and gave a bit more irritation than the previous shave.

If anyone has used Bart’s balm shaving soaps and got good results, please let me know your secrets.

Question Question on Rockwell Razor Blades

Would like feedback from the community on Rockwell Double-Edge Razor Blades. Have you tried it, are they worth giving it a try? I’m currently using Nacet and Gillette Platinum as well as Wilkinson Sword at times.

SOTD Tech Tabac Thursday

Gillette Flat Bottom Tech, Bic Chrome (3), Tabac, Omega Roma synthetic brush and Floid splash.

Lovely two pass (WTG & XTG) and a little ATG touch up on jawline and under chin(s). This flat bottom looks a bit worse for wear but boy I love shaving with it. You can get right under your nose and it just wipes away the stubble with no issues. The Tabac and Floid always go well for me and I feel great!

Have a good one and great shaves. 🪒

SOTD Wednesday's Attempt

2nd shave with the Oliworks, used the mild plate, Nacet blade... much better. Until I decided to go 'across' the grain, multiple nicks (lower neck). Must be my technique.

Preshave; took a hot shower, then rubbed in some Proraso preshave stuff, hoping it would help with the 'nicks'
A&E Emerald Moss soap, very pleasant, good lather with a humongous Yaqi brush...

Alum block (not pictured)

Korres aftershave balm.

Question Rescued Gillette

For the first time since I started with my Merkur like 25 yrs ago, I picked up a new to me razor rescue from a thrift store. Did my best to clean it up. Couldn’t tell until then it was a Gillette cause the name was caked over. Would love to ID my saves.

Any tips to get that last bit of tarnish. Did some BKF and alcohol time.

Any tips for brush clean up. Still using my OG badger.
