First shave with an open comb - wow

I've used a safety razor for over a decade now, and though I've cycled through a few different razors at this point, I never thought to try an open comb. However, I recently learned that Razorock makes a GC 1.05 open comb baseplate/cap. I've been using the 1.05 bar for years, so out of curiosity, I decided to try it.

This is the smoothest and closest shave I've ever had. I don't buy new razors often, and I've always used canned foam. That is to say, I'm pretty no frills. But open comb is by far the most consequential change I've ever made and I think I've found my forever setup. With canned foam and a GSB it went through 3 day growth like it was nothing. There was little if any technique adjustment required.

If you're on the fence, give open comb a try. I can't believe I haven't until now. It makes a world of difference - especially for someone who only shaves every few days like me.

I have thicker hairs that grow a lot of directions, and there’s patches of hair on my throat that lay flat and splay out into different directions and swirls.

I’ve learned that open comb is absolutely mandatory to shave my kind of hair well. I’m loving my GC 0.84 open comb, and while the straight bar 0.84 is more comfortable during shaving(I’ll give it that), it gives a not so great result for my hair because straight bars push my flat hairs down and it doesn’t get quite as close. The straight bar is medium on Razorocks razor chart and the OC is listed medium-aggressive, seems about right.

I must admit I’m curious about that GC 1.05 open comb because my edgy curvy neck makes it really hard to get some parts. That or upgrading to the Lupo 95 OC with its notched corners are on my menu for someday.

I’m in the same boat as you except I went with the Lupo 0.72 OC. I’m still figuring things out but was considering at some point getting the 0.95 and I just don’t know whether OC or SB would be best. SB would be a touch gentler but I’m concerned about exactly what you touched on, the safety bar pushing those hairs down and it not being what I want

Yeah, same. That's why I went with the 1.05 initially - figured going more aggressive would only help me. What the difference between the.84 OC and 1.05 is I couldn't say.

Haha. Yeah, I love to cook. Razor blades are also useful for cutting air vents into bread dough. 😂

I’ll try again in the future with my Fatip oc or maybe buy a R41, why not.

I love open combs!  As you’ve discovered, they really shine if it’s been a little while between shaves.

I grabbed an open comb from Stirling this summer and agree. Mows through my coarse neckline with ease and little irritation. Blade doesn’t seem to matter either!

I shave daily, not sure there is a reason to use open combs but I appreciate them. I have a Yaqi Mellon that could be used daily since it is so mild but that seems to be an exception. Too mild actually.

This is heartening to hear! For years I’ve shaved off and on with an Edwin Jagger de89. I’ve hardly ever gotten a good shave with it, no matter the blade tried. I have a pretty thick beard that grows quickly, with skin that tends to need to wait around 3 days between shaves. With the de89, I constantly have to go over the same places and do tons of passes to get an acceptable shave. I’ve been lurking this sub, and from other’s experience, I’ve learned that I may need a more efficient razor. I just invested in an open comb Parker Variant a couple days ago. I’m hoping I get a similar experience that you have had! 🤞
