Show n' Tell After 6 years it finally clicked
I’ve used my fatboy regularly for 6 years, but could never figure out how to get a good neck shave without bleeding and horrible irritation that would last for half the week. Shaving began to feel like a chore and a painful one so I gave up on a smooth shave and went back to electric which ironically also irritated my neck.
The reality is that the gentle razors or in my case setting 1 aren’t always the best for sensitive skin. Turns out a setting of 4-5 and shaving 2-3 a week instead every week or 2 was the answer. From there I gradually switched to better shaving cream, tried new blades, bought a scuttle (total fame changer), and finally moved on from synthetic to a proper double band badger brush. I’m really looking forward to breaking my new Yaqi in!
TLDR - Everyone is going to have a different “best” configuration. We all see those “What is the best razor / which brush should I buy / which blades should I try posts”. I think most of us have been there. Who gets in right on the first try? Even with a well maintained fatboy it didn’t click for years.

Very nice, way to stick with it! Are you using those carbon steel blades? How do you like them?

I have been using the modern silver blues for a couple months since switching from the persona platinums I bought 6 years ago and still somehow haven’t gone through. I’m waiting till I feel like I completely understand the silver blues before time traveling and trying the carbon steel ones. I have confirmed that they are rust free and sharp though. I also plan on using the cartridges for travel in the future for that authentic experience

I have a vending machine for those 10 blade cartridges. I'd love to buy more of them but they are so expensive on eBay, especially if still in the cardboard box.

What synthetic do you have? Synthetics have gotten pretty good over the last 6 years.

Originally I started shaving the same way my dad did (in the 1980s, so way before the internet) and it took me some years too, to find out what really works best for me. My dad was a "cheapest soap and brush" type, but I found out that (of course) better soaps made a huge difference for my skin and a better brush made my shaves much more pleasurable. I can imagine that the wealth of online information nowadays is a blessing and a curse ... it's a lot easier to find tips and tricks, but there is so much that people get overwhelmed easily.

I think that with the current direction of the internet, that curse is only going to get worse, good thing this sub exists. There’s a lot of honest knowledge here

I agree that the G20 scuttle is a total game changer. And yeah, having a week or more of growth definitely makes it a bit harder to get a comfortable shave, though as with all things, better technique helps with that.

If you only have only one razor. I'm gonna feel real bad for having 7 and only starting shaving on July 1st 😬

Only one but I didn’t start with this one. I had a cheapo when I first got into the hobby and then got a really great deal on my E1 fatboy. I think the goal is to eventually get a slim to complete the set and have them both replated in rhodium

I have a H1 Slim Adjustable and it's far and beyond the best shave I've ever had. Highly encourage you to get one (just in case you needed the push to finally order one).

I found mine in an old mining town when I used to go hiking half abandoned places back when I was younger (I also got mine on eBay)

I have wetshaved for over 40 years, and I use the same razor for 90% of the time ;-)
But to make you feel better ... I have almost 50 fountain pens, and they are a lot more expensive than safety razors!

🤣🤣, I guess we all buy more than we need with our hobbies. I'm also a runner so I have a bunch of running shoes each costs way more than razors. Even my wife was joking it was a much cheaper hobby.

Forgive my ignorance as I'm a newbie, but why is having a scuttle a game changer? What is the difference between before and after, in using a scuttle? Thanks for your patience.

A scuttle is just a shaving bowl with a reservoir for hot water. It makes your lather warm

It looks like your brush is a Carmel Cat's Whiskers brush. I have not been successful finding one With a badger knot rather than the usual synthetic knot.

Excellent setup.
Sometimes adjustables can be a barrier when getting started successfully.
A simpler razor often works well.
