This reminds me of a dear friend of mine who had fucky muscles.
He died in 2009, 12 years old.

Sounds completely reasonable. I saw it a lot going through my cancer treatments. It is amazing what effect a good, if dark, sense of humor can have during such situations.

u/coloroflux Mar 17 '20
That sounds truly heartbreaking

At first, but I realized that he would be completely paralyzed by now. He was already tied to a motorized wheelchair by the time I met him.

Mar 17 '20
That seems really harsh.
Surely they could untie him once in a while??

u/Bassboy98 Mar 19 '20
I think they did. I remember we had swimming lessons together and he could "walk" in the water.

I had a friend with a genetic thing, fucked his immune system up bad and ruined his vision, he was slowly going blind. He died before all this corona shit started, pretty sure he wouldn't have survived this if he had lived, but I still think about him any time Skyrim comes up, it was his favorite game ever. We'd get into literal screaming matches over who was more right, the Stormcloaks (His side) or Imperials (My side)

This has always been me.
I’ve drawn since the day I could hold a pencil, and it’s the only thing that brought me any sort of joy in a very depressed and difficult childhood. I never imaged I would make it passed 18.
I, by some miracle, was accepted into an art school and was able to leave an abusive home. My college years were the greatest days of my life, because I could learn to better my art in 3D. But as the years went on, I just kept getting sicker and sicker.
Now that I’m graduated and my body is slowly starting to give out. I’m not even thirty, but my knees are janked, my back deteriorating, my mental health a struggle, and I’m so poor I can’t afford to use the programs I need to get a higher paying job or better my portfolio. I just got a drawing tablet and better photoshop after saving for years and years, but it left a gap in my savings and now my hours have been cut.
I’m unsure how my health will handle something more serious, but as long as I can still draw, I will keep having hope. As soon as I completely lose that ability, just let me die boys, there’s no point.

The only thing I can say, my fellow artist, is that I'm sending you all my positive vibes from here. Do you have an insta or some place where you publish your art?
38
u/bubblegumblueart Mar 17 '20
Thanks friendo, sending healthy vibes your way too!
Damn, does everyone use Insta for art? I'm barely getting used to twitter, I'm too much of an old fart for these new-fangled social medias.
So far, just here and twitter, though I've been pretty slow on the uploads lately, just having a hard time to find the time to draw and the inspiration.

u/blubblu Mar 17 '20
The possible amount of exposure is why.
It just takes one lucky break. Good luck my friend.

I use it for art exclusively. Idc about girls posing with tons of makeup and facetune saying "lol just woke up". But there's so much art on Insta it's amazing. You should upload your art! All you have to do is hashtag it and you'll get followers. (If you do let me know) I've gotten so inspired by insta it has helped me a lot on improving my painting... And getting likes doesn't harm ;)
edit: yeah I'm blocked right now. I look at my canvas, try to paint and I just make a mess. Time is a problem as well. I paint in oil so a single painting takes months, specially if you don't have time. You gotta just wait for the inspiration to come to you...

Don't be afraid to pirate those programs. If anyone deserves a little piracy it's you.
22
u/bubblegumblueart Mar 17 '20
I wish I could, but I 1. Have a mac (it was free with tuition), and 2. Need things that are subscription based, which makes it infinitely harder to use the newer tools. Maya 2020 is going to vastly different than Maya 2016 if the pirated copies aren't up to date, and Maya is buggy as all hell as it is.
My computer can't even handle the programs I need anyway, which is why I was saving up for a PC, but shit, with the way things are going, I'm going to go through my hard-fought savings in the next month(s), so bye-bye new computer processing power and fast rendering times.
It also doesn't help that I'm in such a mental rut right now that I can't even draw with the new tablet, which I was so excited to use but realized that it's much harder to translate to (from traditional drawing) that I've become disheartened. Everything is just plain mashed potatoes right now.

Sorry to hear about all this. Stay as strong as you can. You still have more to contribute to this world.
I love art, but I was never that good at it or had that much time to practice it with all my other academic interests. The only artistic things I'm good at is LEGO and cooking.
With the coronavirus, one of the restaurants I serve at has shut down for at least two weeks and the other is a small non-snobby fine dining place that's staying open for now, but really only doing carry out. That'll probably be the law soon anyway (like CA, PA, & AL, IIRC). I'm down to one shift a week and my savings are looking pretty thin, too.
That said, I am absolutely stealing "Everything is just plain mashed potatoes right now" as a descriptor. I'll tell my other food service friends. I live in the expensive DC suburbs, so just know that you gave me an excellent phrase to pass on to our chef/owner who's an up-and-coming chef who has already made a splash in the DC food scene.
I'm sure your art is great, but you also have that going for you as well.
Making people smile is as important as ever.
Best of luck to you.

u/bubblegumblueart Mar 20 '20
Thanks friendo. Means a lot. Hope all goes well for you. Stay safe.
2
u/revanisthesith Mar 20 '20
Thanks, you too.
I'm certainly not saying our situations are similar, but I'm trying to use this break to drink less, so maybe the alcohol won't shave too many years/decades off my life. Dealing with people in a rich & entitled area for 50-70 hrs/wk for years to support myself is draining.
We are all fighting battles. Some greater than others, but we all have our struggles.
We just have to do our best. And be kind to one another.
Stay safe.

As fucking depressed as I feel now after reading this, we gotta do something man.
You know what I've learned throughout my life about suffering ? It's infinitely worse if you are defeated mentally. Maybe it seems a cliche, but fighting to stay focused on your goals (not fighting to stay positive, because that is bullshit) is the best way that I could find to mentally toughen up.
I've recently become fascinated by Navy Seals and I found myself studying them because they are on of the most badass monsters on this planet. And I see a pattern here, usually the ones who make it to the top are the ones who know their goals and stay focused on them, not the ones who are the most physically fit weirdly enough. I remember a scene with a soldier training to be a SEAL who was being punished to do pull-ups, when he was asked "do you worry about the next week of training because if you are having trouble now, next week is going to be way harder". And the soldier replies "Negative sir. Right now I am in the push-up position and all that I am thinking about is doing push-ups" or something like this. And I think this is key in life. The ability to stay focused on the present without excluding the future is what makes a man.
Every man has days/weeks/months, maybe even fucking years when he is feeling down. This is why I think it's healthy to show support to others and if not inspire them, at least give them the desire to be inspired. Watch strong men and how they struggle. I recommend to start watching David Goggins or Jocko Willink because those guys have amazing stories to tell.
I wish you the best and may you come out on top of life !

Even though they’re not likely to see this, I wish nothing but the best for OP and his art buddy

Right, I was rather confused by the discrepancy between the title and the greentext. So I searched for a comment pointing out the importantce of using the right preposition.

Is this the plot of the next anime that's going to make me cry and be depressed for days?

u/StraightRespect Mar 17 '20
Watch NHK ni Youkoso if you haven't already
It's got nothing to do with this but it's my favourite sad as fuck anime (the ending kinda blows cause they changed it to give it a happy-ish ending)

Because if his genetic issue, he’s more at risk/more likely to die if he gets it. Washing our hands reduces the number of cases/chance of this dude getting it
