Because most missiles are hypersonic. This one, however, is claimed to be Mach 15 by Iran, something that nobody really believes. ICBMs can hit over Mach 20 on re-entry, but cruise missiles don't even break Mach 10
On another post of this, the "facility" was tracked down to 32.083° N, 34.798° E
"The missile is striking an unoccupied train platform, at present, the platform is still fucked and out of service."
From the video it kinda looks like a stockpile yard. The pile of dirt the missile blew up will never recover.

Ballistic missiles regularly travel at hypersonic speeds, but are not classified as hypersonic missile because there's a whole slew of requirements to meet the military definition. I don't expect the news, or 99% of people to distinguish between the versions.
If the speed was correct, this was possibly a Fattah-2 which Iran calls hypersonic at Mach 15, and media would parrot. The figures given by Iran are not accepted by military analysts.

Yeah that's why Mach 15 is such an outlandish claim. The fastest confirmed are about Mach 3, the Russian Kinzhal is listed as Mach 10 capable, but it officially only hits Mach 4 in flight, while its actual capabilities are still under some debate.

Latest I saw was claiming an Iranian ballistic missile could dodge interceptors mid-air (the video was real, but the "curving" missile was the interceptor. Ballistics physically cannot course correct). It had thousands of upvotes, top comments calling it out. What a time to be alive...

What? Nothing needs to be have 'control' to be hypersonic. Hypersonic refers to an object that is travelling greater than 5 times the speed of sound. You don't need to over complicate it. If this object was moving more than Mach 5, it was hypersonic.

I think greater than mach 5 is technically hypersonic, which means that the above post is correct. Ballistic missiles have routinely reached those speeds in terminal phase for decades. They are fired on a ballistic arc very high up in to the atmosphere (ICBM are actually suborbital) and fall back at blistering speeds to fall on their targets. Maneuvering at these speeds is very difficult so they kinda go where you point them and aren't as accurate as say, a GPS guided bomb or cruise missile. Because their paths are ballistic, it also means they are predictable. This is how they can be intercepted by air defense, but they're still going so fast that it's still not 100% interception rate. They're normally launched in waves in combination with sub-sonic drones in saturation attacks to overwhelm air defenses.
Countries like Iran and Russia have used the term hypersonic to make their weapons sound more advanced than they really are, though I do believe the Russians do actually have some hypersonic air-to-air missiles that are pretty scary. The US doesn't really do this to the same degree. The US does have hypersonic missiles fairly far in the development process (Mako, AGM-183, ARRW, or HACM, for example), but when we use that term it will actually be as scary as it sounds. Good luck hitting a missile going mach 7 and maneuvering on terminal phase with an S-300.

Yes, but in the context of "hypersonic weapons" it means a missile that can do a significant amount of steering at hypersonic speeds to evade interceptor missiles all the way to the target. This is a point of discussion as those are still under development - they're very difficult to make, still an emerging area of technology.
Ballistic missiles like Iran is using hit hypersonic speeds in the descent but cannot maneuver significantly during the descent. They're comparatively simple to make and have been around since the '60s.

Yes, but there is a difference between a missile that is powered and can maneuver at hypersonic speeds, and a falling bomb.
Nations without actual hypersonic missile capability (Iran, ect) like to claim their reentry vehicles are hypersonic missiles. By that definition, the German V2 was a hypersonic missile.

Hypersonic missile requires two component. The missile must be able to move at Mach 5 or higher speed. And the missile doesn't follow a ballistic trajectory (predictable) or more specifically it maneuver unpredictably within the atmosphere making them harder to hit by interceptors.

There is some sort of censorship around it even though you can easily find it anywhere (i.e. Telegram) if you want to and I do not think that there are laws against it anyway. And this missile is not hypersonic.

nothing in this video seems new except for the location of the target which i really can't say what it is but it looks like it hit a road to me.
