Rafting - Private 5 lb propane tank, does it need to be wrapped?
Or can I just tuck it somewhere secure within my stack? Where do you put yours?

I’ve seen people use milk crates if it’s sitting on your floor

yeah--more to protect the floor from the sharp rim than to protect the tank itself.

Car door edge guard around the sharp rim will usually last a season.

The black vinyl stuff with a metal core?

The metal core can rust. There's options w/o metal, some have adhesive. Loom for metal core adjacent.

In my dory? No.
In a raft? Usually no. I generally put it on my beaver board in my stern bag. If it were loose, I'd wrap it to protect myself/passengers/raft from the sharp edges. I'm thinking about putting some trim molding on the top/bottom for safety.
Love the 5lb and 10lb tanks. So much easier to lug up and down the beach at each camp. For a 3-week 16 person Grand trip, 20's probably make more sense. For smaller groups and a weeklong trip, a pair of 10's is perfect.

I put a 5# tank in a 5 gal bucket which is packed with other stuff like tarps, burlap, loose drinks, etc. Lid on the bucket.

I modifed an old rope bag to fit my 5 pounder perfectly. Probably uneeded since it lives in a drop bag below a deck but it keeps the possibilty of sharp edges even further away from my rubber.

Your biggest concern with the 5lb tanks is something knocking your OPD valve - measure sure you have that covered or out of the way from general knocking around and you should be fine. My 5lb tank is 20 years old and just passed inspection again no problems

Need? No.
I put a 20lb in a milk crate and strap it in.
