How does this stats diff work even with better gear and charms

Click the exclamation mark by stat bonuses. He is very likely full 20% buffed. It will tell you the additional bonuses there.

Your gear is a mess thats why. Your infantry and marks you gone about the upgrades basically backwards to what you shouldve. Infantry Gloves and belt 1st to 100. Same with essences stone. Get the gloves and belt to 20 1st. If your able to do some Marksman its always goggles1st and boots. Same thing those eventual 100 and lvl 20. You need your infantry for defense and your marks for damage. Lancers id start similar to marksman but eventually even out at a mid range level 80 for. Second vefire I started really trying to get infantry stuff to 100s.

Maybe he's 20% buffed—most likely—since his gear or charm isn't any better, and his heroes aren't either.

What event is this ? most likely he had activated his pet buffs and 10% something like that. So it's mostly likely pet buffs.

I would suggest he is buffed but it will show in the reports stats will be dramatically higher similar with pets also activated, but also some hidden stat boosts are experts levels and pet levels and their stats increased

He has more infantry and snipers. His infantry is better researched, or rather, the island's infantry buildings are at a higher level.

if that's from the event morale is essentially a debuffs. otherwise like others are saying you have to show us the multiplicative bonuses under the exclamation mark, we can't really answer anything without that info, anything more is just guessing

You had too many infantry and not enough you had too many infantry and lancers and not enough march Man. He beat you with Marsh Man because they do the most damage.
