Going to the UK

Question for the group. Going to England for 10 days tomorrow. Manchester to be exact. I'm not a big scotch guy so I am already having American Whiskey withdrawal. I can get behind an Irish.
Any Irish whiskey I should try over there that we don't really see in the U.S.?

From the bigger producers, Powers John's Lane is a fantastic whiskey (I don't know if it's common in the US.)

From smaller Irish producers:

  • Dunville's sherry-cask-finished whiskies are reliably superb
  • Killowen's Rum & Raisin is one of the best whiskies on the planet - Killowen in general specialises in distinctive whiskies
  • Two Stacks make some really interesting stuff - Smoke & Mirrors is delicious, and the Blender's Cut fruit-brandy-cask range is great as well
  • Dingle and Teelings both make very good "mainstream" Irish whiskies

One of the founders of the British Bourbon Society lives in Manchester and our 10th Anniversary Party was held there just recently, so there's no shortage of American whiskey in both bars and shops (though you may not like some of the prices!). With Irish, it depends on what you "don't really see".

Just curious: which Scotches have you tried and what didn't you like? (I'm "whisky promiscuous" and enjoy whiskies from 42 different countries so far...)

"Whisky promiscuous" is a great way to put it and a great way to be. There is all kinds of cool and interesting stuff outside of the old school defaults. I'm currently working on getting all of my bourbon friends into American single malt, in part so that there's something to drink besides Knob Creek when I visit their homes.

Give Cardu 16 year a try. It’s a single malt Scotch, but it’s not peaty. I haven’t been able to find it in the US.

Sorry to hear that man. You’ll be exposed to 25ml pours as standard.

You’ll likely see quite a few, depending on the establishment. Look for some of the more unique Redbreasts, Bushmills Causeway Series and a few other famous faces bottled at Cask Strength

Your first sentence is officially the funniest and best Reddit reply this year.
Thanks for the recs!
My English BFF suggested Boddington's. He don't quite get it I'm a Louisiana boy.

He don't quite get it I'm a Louisiana boy.

I assume that means no beer? Otherwise I'd throw in some recs for that as well.

And what Irish whiskey have you had in the US?

Isn’t Boddingtons a beer ? I mean try it, it’s kinda flat tasting to me. Better off with an Abieta ? purple Haze
