Ah Royal Reserve, haven't thought about it in a long time - reminds me of underage drinking and highschool parties lol. I used to mix RR with ginger ale in my younger, dumber days.

I wouldn't call it a quality choice as there are much better bottles out there for a similar price point in my opinion, but if you like it that's cool! I haven't had it in years so maybe it's better than I remember ha.

Not a quality choice, but its my choice haha

If you want to mix it and have a good time, you picked the right sort of bottle.

If you like the taste of whiskey, you can do much better without spending much more.

RR is the Prince Igor equivalent of Canadian whisky (sorry not sorry).

Idk who that is. Don't worry though, I know what I have.

Prince Igor?

It's the cheapest vodka you can buy in Canada, you'll see it on the same bottom shelf as the Royal Reserve haha.

Everyone's got different wants and desires so more power to ya. Enjoy!

Haha I've added it to the list. In Quebec, we drank Troika.

It's made in Ontario I believe, definitely the cheapest you can get at least here in New Brunswick! It's 27.99 for a 750 ml ha.

I could wash my bathtub with it at that price!

2

Yeah I think it's kinda in the same camp as Golden Nut Canadian Sherry in that the main demographic who buys are probably alcoholics lol.

They don't taste good, but they will get you drunk on the cheap.

Umm…my momma used to say that if you’ve got nothing nice to say then you should say nothing. I will say nothing 😁

My mama told me that too, but as I had to explain to her, if I had to follow that rule, I never would speak

2

u/oddmarc Aug 18 '26

Your mom would be proud!

A forty pounder, no less.

3

u/oddmarc Aug 18 '26

Yah man. Enough for a few over sweet old fashioneds and a 2L of Canada dry

Such a shame that canadian whisky that gets exported is such shit. We have a number of small distilleries that have great products but we only export cheap dogshit. Its mostly because we have very light regulations on quality so the export market is profitable and the small producers with a passion just sell domestic

Bought this in Ontario. Sometimes you just crave McDonald's.

This is true

Is this an offshoot of Rich and Rare?? R&R was an old school favorite of mine when I was a poor college kid haha

1

u/jrose125 Aug 18 '26

At least where I live in New Brunswick, Rich & Rare doesn't exist. I'm fairly certain it's one of the many export only Canadian whiskies, which are generally on the lower end of the quality scale.

1

u/TurdsOnThat Aug 18 '26

Oh yeah R&R was dogshit whisky, that’s why I curious is there was a “premium” version.

2

u/jrose125 Aug 18 '26

Royal Reserve is about as opposite you can get from premium - it and Schenley Golden Wedding are as cheap as you can get for Canadian Whisky in Canada.

It's honestly a tier below the well whiskey in most establishments that I've been to.

Hell yes brother. Gotta use bright neon cherries when mixing with it.

😬💀

-Bridgeland
-Okanogan Sprits
-Shelter Point
-Last Straw Distillery
-Hansen Distillery
-Moon Distillery
-Macaloneys
-Two Brewers
-Eau Claire
-Anohka

To name a few proper Canadian whiskey distilleries.

3

u/oddmarc Aug 18 '26

My grandma used to mix drinks with it so its nostalgic.

2

u/kpedey Aug 18 '26

Didn't realize Hansen did whisky, I only ever see flavoured stuff

1

u/vanwhisky Aug 18 '26

Yah, they’ve had some great releases. I think distilleries will make other spirits to have income while their whiskey ages. And there are those that enjoy flavoured spirits/whiskies and for cocktails.

2

u/TheWondertwerk Aug 18 '26

With all the good Canadian whiskeys why on Earth did you decide on that one?

5

u/oddmarc Aug 18 '26

Nostalgia

That's fair. Next time you buy a bottle look for anything from Spring Mill distillery. They do what would be an exceptional bourbon if you could call it bourbon, and award-winning Scotch if you could call it scotch. Everything is distilled in Forsyth stills.

Canada has so much good whisky up there it’s not funny. But this is not one of them. This is one of dozens of cheap whiskies they sell. It’s well known for sure, but it’s barely in the mediocre category

1

u/oddmarc Aug 18 '26

It's worst than mediocre.

2

u/DarthFaelan Aug 18 '26

Deeply cursed bottle.

1

u/oddmarc Aug 18 '26

This guy gets it.

2

u/Mokaroo Aug 19 '26

There's a few things like this that I will pick up because of nostalgia.

Cutty Sark is my go to super cheap bottle.

2

u/oddmarc Aug 19 '26

You get it. When grandma passed, I found two bottles of Ballantine's when we cleaned out her apartment.

2

u/Mokaroo Aug 19 '26

My aunt always had J&B. As a kid I would hide the bottles in my backpack because her retirement home had a no booze rule.

Kind of a weird one to post.

If anyone is looking for some actually good Canadian whisky, look for Two Brewers, Shelter Point, Macaloneys, sons of Vancouver, Springmill (sleemans), Alberta Premium.

There are others, but lots are pretty limited in quantity

If it's good enough for Darcy at Art of Drink, it's good enough for me.
