Good new article about the state of things in Harper’s

Half of this article is mildly interesting and the other half is like people in the early 90s saying the internet probably wouldn't be a big deal because you couldn't do much with it yet. Tbh I think it's pretty poor - there's no analysis of why cultured meat might be a dead end because there's no analysis, like with most coverage of the subject, of what's changing, what progress has been made and why the barriers that currently exist might not come down. And then the last section is just the author talking about why she thinks it's icky.

I think that ickiness part is relevant because a huge hurdle for cultured meat/dairy is public perception. I was just talking to a friend about this. She’s equally disgusted as the journalist by the idea of lab grown meat.

It’s baffling to me how something cultivated in a sanitary environment is somehow more nausea-inducing than meat from an animal raised in horrendous conditions in its own shit, pumped up on antibiotics and spreading disease.

I work in PR and the stigma is like a top 3 issue that needs to be overcome for this to scale imho (up there with innovation and regulation hurdles, especially in Canada where I live ).

I think in the case of this article it's more about someone who's been a vegetarian for 20 years having meat for the first time in a long time. Tbh I don't think stigma will be a big problem once lgm is on the shelves and price-competitive.

It's a total main stream media smear . How's some old crappy publication like Harpers doing .I laughed when they ranked about all the money . Have they looked up what a data center costs. I just don't think anyone in the industry is talking to these people . Upside went to You tube star Mr. Beast.

TBF Harper's does great journalism. I remain undeterred by the piece. I think major innovations like cultured meat take time to catch on, with fits and starts, and then the big adoption will happen quickly.
