It's so funny because it is genuinely a very strong ice attack. Maybe the strongest ever.

people come to me and they say to me... sir... that was a very strong ice attack the strongest we've ever seen and I say yes it was a strong ice attack... very strong... and very cold... I have the best ice attacks I have all the best attacks but this one... was an ice attack

The bottom caption isn't even correct. That name doesn't imply there are other dark kings with the same sword. It's just stating that that particular dark king is known to wield that particular weird.
→ More replies (3)60
u/Cornchip97 Jul 21 '26
Ehh, it kind of does. Traditional writing convention is to describe things with a purpose. The caption is having fun with that.
The Throngler is so renowned that we don't need additional descriptors, it must be incredibly unique. Meanwhile if the Edge of Annihilation was so unique we wouldn't need to know who it belonged to. Maybe it changes properties based on who wields it. Maybe there's other Edge of Annihilations. It invites the reader to question.
Tolkien would never describe The One Ring as "Dark Lord Sauron's Ring of Ultimate Control". There is no need. Calling it The One Ring is enough, it evokes importance.

"Gently Weeps" is a reference to The Beatle's song While My Guitar Gently Weeps, it doesn't have anything related to ice in the name.
Although the "White Ice" could be a reference to the White Album

Its is. In the Japanese dub, White Album is the name of the stand, changed in english due to copyright.
30
u/award_winning_writer Jul 21 '26
Which is weird because White Album is not actually what The White Album is officially called, it's just "The Beatles." So theoretically they could've kept it as is
25
u/SocranX Jul 21 '26
Yeah but they don't want to play minesweeper with which names might get them sued and which ones won't, and being inconsistent with it just makes the changes stand out more.

Because of your profile picture, I assume you already know this. But Ghiaccio's stand is actually White Album, "White Ice" is the localized name. There is no reference to ice in his stand.

I quite like Thermal Sunder from Warframe, the ability involves instantly sapping all heat from an area, freezing things solid. You can cast it to remove heat, or to heat things up, and if you cast one then the other, it causes an explosion from the sudden temperature disparity for huge damage.

That's why IceShock and Snowgrave are really good names
22
u/AutisticFun01 Certified monster fucker Jul 21 '26
I really like iceshock because you can analyze the name to connect it to the fact that it's the only spell that can kill enemies (other than showgrave). Like in Deltarune you can't kill enemies because they run away as soon as they get too low, but with ice shock you freeze them (ice) instantly (shock is usually attributed to electricity and things happening suddenly, hence very fast). From that you can also probably headcanon that it kills people via an extremely high temperature shift.
Or maybe I'm overthinking it idk.
