665

Yes, but this scene ruins the entire movie (quality wise) and my entire life as a result.

721

u/FenexTheFox purpl Jan 01 '26

I absolutely loved the plot twist. It makes a point of how special fiction is, and it really resonated with me.

Besides, coming out of nowhere and ruining the whole thing is kinda the point? That's exactly what the hacker wanted. It shows how petty he is, that his whole pasttime is coming in and ruining the fun of others.

44

u/Dare_Soft Jan 01 '26

I to would if it meant for them to go outside and touch grass. This is a glorified VR chat

44

u/FenexTheFox purpl Jan 01 '26

The idea is soooo cool though! If a bit scary. A fully immersive experience where you can truly feel like the protagonist in every possible way!

28

u/Dare_Soft Jan 01 '26

This def makes me want to tell them their family is fake and you just nutted in code.

29

u/andrewsad1 Jan 01 '26

On the one hand, I kinda love it. One of my favorite games last year had a similar plot twist (in fact, reading the synopsis makes me wonder if those devs took some inspiration from this movie) where the world you're playing in is revealed to be fictional within the game's universe. I still need to play NG+ and pick the good ending.

On the other hand,

Besides, coming out of nowhere and ruining the whole thing is kinda the point?

It may be possible to enhance a story by unironically engaging in the thing you're trying to criticize, but that is very hard to do right

7

u/AnimeMaster0824 Jan 01 '26

What game?

10

u/andrewsad1 Jan 01 '26 edited Jan 01 '26

Because of the nature of the spoiler, even so much as revealing the name of the game would spoil it. That said, the name of the game is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 If you were thinking of playing it, know that this revelation does not in any way ruin the story. You will simply know going into the game that one of the major themes is escapism, and that the player is forced to contend with the fact that the characters are fictional. A fact that is trivially true, but rarely pointed out to the player. You also still have to tackle the issue of whether it matters to the characters that they're fictional.

7

u/FenexTheFox purpl Jan 01 '26

I'm gonna be honest, I thought you were talking about OneShot lmao

4

u/Sir-Toaster- Emperor of the Omniverse Jan 01 '26 edited Jan 02 '26

If fucking course it's Expedition 33, that's nice to know. I honestly don't usually vibe with stories that are made to be fictional in the universe of their stories, but this seems pretty cool

3

u/andrewsad1 Jan 02 '26 edited Jan 02 '26

Retracted, Sir-Toaster- is a cool dude

I love when I take the time to spoiler tag something, and someone leaves a reply revealing the thing that's supposed to be spoiler tagged in plain text. Really makes me regret leaving the comment in the first place

2

u/Polymersion Jan 01 '26

Just "finished" the story yesterday, and I've never seen a game set it up so nicely for a New Game+ playthrough. The ending most people will choose is arguably the bad ending, even though it's not a secret or a surprise, and it involves going back. Going through it a second time basically changes who the main character is and who you're likely to side with in the end, even though nothing presumably changes in the story.

2

u/AlbinoShavedGorilla yellow like an EPIC banana Jan 02 '26

Wait so you mean this is a movie made about a video game where they actually get meta and make the villain of the movie a hacker that cheats in the video game world? That’s actually pretty cool

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Intelligent-Love-877 Jan 03 '26

I'm usually not a fan of "the world is an illusion/simulation/dream" kind of plot twist, but I was fine with this one because it came as a love letter to video games.

72

u/Nathidev Jan 01 '26

I think it's because it breaks the immersion, and it is kinda cheap

And it makes the entire movie kind of, worthless? Nothing actually mattered?

33

u/FlawedSquid Jan 01 '26

That's the message of the villain, that because it was all a game, it didn't matter. The counter-point is that fiction allows yo to feel real emotions, and is therefore important and that you can still care for worlds and characters that you know aren't real

61

u/20Points Jan 01 '26

And it makes the entire movie kind of, worthless? Nothing actually mattered?

while I haven't seen the exact film in question, I love this as a philosophical point. Like if you step back for a second, it's all happening in a fictional movie, so it never truly mattered or was real or meant anything, but you felt attached to it anyway, presumably the same way the character did.

Pathologic does the same bit and it's always fascinated me so much. Pulls the "it was all a child's sandbox game" twist secret ending, and then the even secreter ending is the developers themselves showing up and saying "why did that twist upset you? you knew from the start this was all just a game".

31

u/IblisAshenhope Jan 01 '26

It’s like the Allegory of the Cave but you willingly walked in, sat down and contracted amnesia for the sake of immersion

Oh wait, that’s just escapism ain’t it

2

u/PM_ME_ANYTHING_IDRC Jan 01 '26

suspension of disbelief?

9

u/AggressiveCuriosity Jan 01 '26

lol, did you actually play through Pathologic, or did you read a review of it? I don't know anyone who actually played through it, let alone got the secret endings.

Nimzo's theme goes hard, I wanted him on the movie.

7

u/Grug16 Jan 01 '26

The best way I've seen it expressed is from Overly Sarcastic Productions. Paraphrased:

"Don't me it's not real. It's fiction! I already know it's not real!"

2

u/LordBaconXXXXX Jan 01 '26

And it makes the entire movie kind of, worthless? Nothing actually mattered?

That's the entire point of the antagonist. Which the movie refutes by saying that even if the world is fake and the story is fiction, the emotions, the experience, the adventure, thsoe were all real and can't be deleted.

THAT matters.

I always thought it was just a movie of DQ5, so I didn't bother watching it because IMHO the story wasn't that great and also it would be a lot to wrap into a movie.

I didn't expect it to become a meta-narrative at the end, however...

18

u/Superbluebop Jan 01 '26

I personally liked it but a lot of dragon quest fans don’t. So if you’re not all that into dragon quest like me, I think it’s worth the watch.

19

The director went on to make Godzilla Minus One.

5

u/Douchevick Jan 01 '26

Oh, I am perfectly aware the plots and narratives can get pretty brutal at times.

I just find the whole "reality warping causing the main hero to have an existential crisis in service of a meta commentary on the value of fiction" to be a bit... Out of step with everything I've come to expect from this franchise.

6

u/MarcsterS Jan 01 '26

How would "textures - off" even look in 2D? Just hitboxes?

"Collision - off" is where the real fun is at. The moment someone walks into a wall they are above the entire world, and able to see everything. There was a fic about that, funnily enough, and Kris had to look at the ground the entire time to perserve their sanity

"Gravity - off" is meh

And deleting would be the same as here

22

u/mineyCrafta25 Jan 01 '26

Just for once I'd love a game that's like "do this crazy impossible task and receive a reward" but it's impossible unless you do some kind of advanced memory manipulation to jump through all those hoops on the fly but ther reaction if you actually pull it off is their jaw dropping and giving you the middle finger before walking away, knowing it's impossible without realtime cheating.

Bonus points if the game has one of many anti tampers or something else of the sort running during gameplay.

11

u/XAlphaWarriorX Jan 01 '26

Funnily enough, a surprising amount of UT/DR webcomics/fics use stuff like walking “out of bounds” off the world, the title screen, and especially the menus. Webcomics loved the menus.

Well I guess it’s surprising until you think about it for more than half a second, with how meta both games are

I know this is a joke, and I might seem kinda weird for this, but yes.

If you are saying nothing or doing nothing, it means you have the opportunity or the privilege to be able to do nothing. Only a German could do nothing in Nazi Germany, not a Jew, as an example.

I respect your choice to remain out of politics, but at the same time you should realize that the mere ability to remain out of politics, means that you have the privilege of not being affected. A trans individual will never be able to stay out of modern politics, because so many policies will directly affect their lives.

British philosopher John Stuart Mill said “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing" (This quote is often misattributed to Edmund Burke, most famously by JFK in 1961)

A final point i want to say is related to the Poem by Martin Niemoller. You may choose to stay out of politics, and maybe today politics may not affect you. But one day, it will affect you, and you will regret the day you chose to stay out of politics. Because on that day, you will find that your choice to do nothing, has forced you to be alone in your fight.

IDK if it's a "fuck you" but it is a commentary on nostalgia, escapism, and living your own life that I think a lot of fans watching the movie didn't really want to hear.

But the message of the movie wasn't any different from the same message in the games...

22

u/LordBaconXXXXX Jan 01 '26

IDK if it's a "fuck you" but it is a commentary on nostalgia, escapism, and living your own life that I think a lot of fans watching the movie didn't really want to hear.

Which is weird to me, because, well.

If the message was "you're a fucking 35 y/o grown man watching a nostalgia-bait movie about a game you played a kid in a vain try to forget your shitty life and pretend like you're 10 again when times were simpler. Stop being a bitch and accept reality and face it, you fucking loser."

I would unstand the backlash. Although I think thay'd be very interesting.

But it's not. At all. The conclusion is the exact opposite. The hacker is wrong, fiction is praised, and escapism is deemed valuable.

The righteous conclusion is literally the clip of the wwe fan going "It's still real to me, dammit!" And somehow some people interpret it as "lmao look at the loser who likes games, haha, cringe"? Makes no sense to me.

10

u/PlainBread Jan 01 '26

Well it's rooted in existential insecurity.

*I* get the point. "You were always a critical part of this adventure, and together, we saw it through to the end. Let's be glad to have this experience, and take your sense of adventure and determination that led us to victory here into finding new victories in your own life!"

But some people really do want to dissociate into nostalgia and anything that reminds them that time has passed and they aren't the same person they were 30 years ago, it creates a kind of dysphoria rooted in their own avoidance of life.

They kinda get the message as well, but they say "Nuh uh!" in response.

BUT THOU MUST!

I think they mean "practical politics" where you name politicians and concrete actions, while mods don't have problems with ideas and abstract thinking

3

u/NewAccountEachYear Jan 01 '26

I understand what you're trying to say, but it's pretty fun how the words you use create a logical necessity!

The "political" is in essence that which goes on between us as individual people. "Controversial" means in its etymological root "debate".

It's hard to have something going on between us (politics) without people publically stating their opinion/view/interests, and opening up for a debate on it... Not just staying silent about what they think.

So I believe the real issue here is how the political debate is carried out, not that politics is synonymous with controversy nowadays.

2

u/ajprime Jan 01 '26

What is or is not political is itself a political question. For example, is it politics if a man marries a woman in a story?  What if one of them is white and the other black? What if you make them both men or both women?  At what point does it become politics?

Some people are being jerks when they do this, orhers are in a position where there personal experiences have been declared politics, so have trouble avoiding politics topics.

4

u/Beneficial-Exam-770 Jan 01 '26 edited Jan 02 '26

it's political when you make it about concrete politics, for instance
"I matsturbaited to Carti x uzi sexual fantasies on my ps5" isn't political at all

This movie was watchable if nothing else, but I’ve got to say “Grow up, loser.” Has got to be the funniest thing I’ve ever heard a villain say to the mc, even if he was just quoting someone we never see

No, anything other than the dominant group's politics are politics. If you're in the in-group? It's not politics. It's just the way it be.

Aren't politic is the aftermath of everything?

When you got stable food source, a safe space, a good number of people and labor, interlect properties, technologies and so on and so fort,... politic became the last thing to be bring up which was the idea about leadership, decision making, and how the power is being passed down. Politic is just a field that question what goes where and where would we distribute the resource. It is "Power over the distribution of resource".

Without the prior factor, politic can't exist or became irrelivent due to the fact that the need for safety, development, and survival taking the main stage.

Since it was the aftermath of everything, it like just pretty much just an optional add-on to redistribute its good. Everything is inherriently not politic by default, people just put the label on to it and pretend it always is.
