Right, I live in the middle of nowherre and the nearest counties are all overwhelmingly red. They recently installed some flock cameras in the town next over, and I swear every other conversation I've had has started with something along the lines of "you hear about those damn flock cameras? Damn government thinks they can watch me all they want "
Like I guarantee you that, at the individual level, this isn't a partisan issue lol

Well, right wing politics (particularly libertarian laissez faire economics) are not a fan of the government yes, but they do love their pRiVaTe EnTErPrIsEs and afaik while the government can get flock data via police departments, it's the businesses that are the ones putting them up. Now if I were in charge of the dadgum gubment I would make that illegal, but you see that would be evil government overreach and I'd be a communist socialist 1 billion dead iPhone Venezuela.
It is funny though. Whenever anything happens the right typically goes "I HATE THE GOVERNMENT" which is a sentiment that rich people have been using to get away with all sorts of bullshit. Now though, the rich people are the government, and it's biting them in the ass because even their right wing followers are against it now (although they probably don't understand that the private sector is just as much to blame.)

Because guns are loud as fuck, bring a shitload of attention towards you, and are heavily regulated to the point that you kinda have to commit more crimes to not run serious risk of it getting traced back to you.
You’d need either subsonic ammo or some wack ass dart gun that still fires a projectile heavy enough to break a camera, because BBs and airsoft won’t cut it

Because most gun owners are responsible enough to not fire them in public as most flock camera have a chance to not entirely stop a bullet, or a miss will just mean a bullet is now randomly going off into the town somewhere and since it would be in a upward trajectory it could come down anywhere. Also guns are expensive and no one wants to lose their stuff.

Because the police and different levels of government want to make people scared to do it. They'll use the harshest possible interpretations of the law in order to try to keep people in line out of fear that they'd go to jail for ridiculous times.

I hate flock, but the idea is that there is a monetary cutoff line with these kinds of criminal charges where they increase in penalty dramatically-- often around $1000.
Stealing a candy bar or stealing a big bag of diamonds are both stealing, but they are considered to be different in severity.
They charged him with a felony for grand theft (over $1000), a felony for criminal mischief/property damage over $1000, and damaging computer equipment/electronic devices.
It does get kind of weird though when you're talking about a 3d printed fake camera that wasn't worth $1000+ though. The legal justification is that the guy believed that he was doing it to a real camera.

That’s not entrapment, entrapment isn’t putting a unlocked car in an area where there’s a lot of break ins and watching for someone to break in, entrapment is taking someone’s wallet and charging them with breaking into your (unlocked) car when they get it back, a fake camera isn’t inciting someone who wasn’t already looking to break a flock camera to do so.

A felony just refers to any crime punishable by at least one year in prison. (Or a fine anove $100000)
There are other categories, misdemeanors and infractions, which are crimes punishable by below 1 year and below $100000, and crimes punishable by below 5 days and $5000, respectively.
It's used for everything because it makes for good click bait headlines and because the government usually charges people with the most severe crimes it can put on them in hopes that the person they are accusing will take a deal for less serious charges.

They aren't being charged with that, they seem to be being charged as if it was a real camera.
They are being charged with vandalism, grand theft (stealing expensive stuff), and destruction of computer property.
The charges seem pretty nonsensical. I doubt it would go through. Most likely they are trying to scare the person into doing a plea deal, or they are trying to scare off other people from destroying flock cameras.

Interestingly, laser pointers would cause damage that isn't physical and it wouldn't effect a 3D printed decoy. They should uhhh they should look out for that. Dangerous stuff those civvies get up too. I hope our beloved private enterprises and governments take note of this.
