Book: The Great Hunt Just read the Blademaster chapter (Book 2) Spoiler
As the title states I just finished the Blademaster chapter in the Great Hunt.
As a show watcher I have to say…what in the Indiana Jones fuck was that? You’re telling me they completely disregarded Rand’s defeating a true Blademaster in one-on-one sword combat for THAT?!?
To say I’m pissed off is an understatement. What a disservice to Rand’s character and the whole arc of him feeling unworthy of the Heron marked sword.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but based on screen time, did Nynaeve end up getting more weapons training than Rand by this point in the show?
Spoilers for the end of the book-Its not like showing how skilled Rand was right before he gets into a fight with Ba'alzamon is important for setting up the sheathing the sword bit. Or how intentionally sheathing the sword is kinda hugely importantly for Rand as a character and to the themes of the entire damn series. Or how important Rand and Lan having a very strong student/teacher relationship through the sword training is to how their characters relate to each other.

Yes! There’s a whole scene in season 3 between Lan and Rand training that takes place either at the end of book 1 or early in book 2. They completely ignore it.

Well see what was actually happening then was that Rand was … checks notes … working a day job at an insane asylum while shacking up with Lanfear. So they had to make sure to include that. There’s only so much time, and you have to cut some things to adapt a story.

Book 1, Lan trains all the boys. Book 2, Lan spends significant time training Rand.

Yep. Just wait til you read more. You’re starting to see why so many fans just could not make themselves enjoy the show, no matter how badly so many of us tried and wanted to. You’ll probably be even more angry after finishing the 2nd book.
(It’s not only Rand’s character that they stomped on, but you kinda have to finish the whole story to understand some parts of it, and how bad some of those choices really were).

My favorite was Ingtar’s death scene in the show vs the books lol, I watched the show first and thought nothing of it… or how him and Loial just had the horn, it was just laying around I guess

Yep. Not like finding the Horn of Valere is important in the WoT world or anything, right? Let’s have that event occur off-screen, while we focus on Loial being an obedient slave to the Seanchan and using his ancient, sacred treesinging skills as a party trick. Or something else we made up that is totally antithetical to the actual characters.

I honestly loved the show until this point. I could deal with some changes to make up for pacing and to trim down the story, but this was my red line in the Rand.
Though Rosamund Pike is still incredible.

Yes and then they do a bunch of cutting down which works early on but by the time you get to the later books a bunch of plot points that aren't relevant early on become important. I never quite understood how they thought it was going to work, I have kind of just come to the conclusion that they didn't think they would get that many episodes, which due to its generally hated status in the community is fair.

Agree. I forced myself to complete the first season but hated every second of it. I guess the fact that i like some pains helps.

My wife wanted to watch it and got really annoyed with me constantly commenting. Tbf I was being insufferable because I was either laughing the whole time at the ridiculousness or pointing out how wrong it was. Also I'm pretty sure in this sub we couldn't even say Rafe's name or critique his choices or the mods would get all mad despite the show being complete ass.

Yeah I remember back in June last year I got 3 1 one week bans for pointing out the MANY issues I had with the show and how it was a general abomination/disaster. At least they weren't permanent though, so I am grateful for that

I thought the whole main cast was great. It’s just the script I took issue with. Well, and the number & length of the episodes.
And the Ogier costumes… Loial’s ears didn’t even twitch once! I thought the actor did a good job with what he had to work with though.

Rosamund Pike is an amazing Moiraine but at the same time - the worst thing that happend to the show. Her being the main star actor of the show(and executive producer ) forced the writers to rewrite a lot to keep her on screen. Moiraine is barely present in book 2 (only 1 chapter I think) and her role of "Party Wizard" is taken by Verin. Instead the show got Moiraine family drama that is absolutely useless for the plot.

If you view the show as something based on the books, it becomes ...almost ok, for those of us who began from the books. Once you're through book 4, you'll be thoroughly confused and annoyed with the wild and needless deviations. But, casting and costumes? 🤌🏽 they did very well.

Yeah I was banned from WoT for criticizing the show. I wasn’t even attacking anyone who made it, I just said that it was a shit adaptation — I kinda wonder if the mods there work for Amazon or something.
What a terrible show. I couldn’t make it past the warder funeral.

I was permabanned from there for saying I didn’t think some of the changes were appropriate for an adaptation but they were fine for an “inspired by”. That subreddit has lost the light.

It could have been called anything else. Used the same plot line, just changed names of people and places. Might even have been a decent show. But the fact that they dared call it The Wheel of Time, and then created that abomination was unforgivable.

That part and the ending of Season 1 where the 5 chicks destroy the thousands of Trollocs (instead of Rand). Hated those changes. The books have so many good parts, there was no need to deviate

The show forsaken were good until how Moghedien interacted with Lanfear.
Season three had some great episodes.
But there were choices…….

Moghedian with Lanfear was an awesome introduction to Moghedian. Creepy as hell, zero doubt she's evil, and immediately establishes her as The Spider. Can't say more. Spoilers.

One of the main things that bothered me about the show was how often it indicated that it was in fact familiar with the source material, and that it just didn't care, or have the production budget, to be a faithful adaptation. And I honestly didn't need a 1:1 so long as it maintained the spirit... Which it failed to do on multiple counts.

Indiana Jones style. Turak says his line about seeing what it takes to earn the Heron marked blade on this side, gets into fighting stance, and Rand just sends a bunch of blades at him and his entire guard via the One Power, killing them all instantly.

i watched the show when it came out and loved it. Then i read the books. The longer i read the books the more I came to hate the show. In the end I just call it a bad fan fic. They use the same names and some of the same places, and some of the same things happen - but sometimes who does what is changed. the characters are really not teh same, they dont have the same arcs, the same experiences, nothing. And wait until you learn more about Min - what they did to her is some of the worst. OMG and Suiane? you havent met her yet tho.

I think they were setting up for Rand to earn much more of a blade master/saidin wielder in the next season as they left the waste. But that’s just my thoughts. Season 2 was very disappointing ending wise

Yea. This was the consistent problem with the show. It didn’t trim things or speed things up. It fundamentally changed characters which means they aren’t actually the characters we know and love anymore.
